Melting the Ice (The Renegades Series Book 10) by Melody Heck Gatto Review

Melting the Ice (The Renegades Series Book 10)Melting the Ice by Melody Heck Gatto
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Melody Heck Gatto heats things up with MELTING THE ICE, the tenth book in the Renegades series. Newly single, Talia Kidd, picks up Harrison Dash in a Pittsburgh bar not realizing he was her brother’s teammate. This contemporary sports romance is suitable for adults.

I adored this story. Talia is a great heroine. She is the older sister of Renegades team captain, Tyler Kidd (Book #3). She is the responsible sibling who took care of the others. Harrison had a bad experience in a previous relationship that made him swear off marriage. He is known as a playboy that will never settle down. The two have amazing chemistry. They seem like an unlikely match but are perfect for each other. They both have been hurt by a previous relationship. They help each other heal and grow to become better people.

Melody Heck Gatto did an amazing job with this story. MELTING THE ICE has become one of my favorite books in the Renegades series. It is skillfully- written. It had entertaining twists. There were relevant obstacles. The story was believable and heartfelt. Fans of the Renegades series will not be disappointed. I recommend this book to lovers of sports romances. I voluntarily reviewed an advance reader copy of this book.

Trust the Wolf (Shift #1) by Zoe Ashwood Review

Trust the Wolf (Shift, #1)Trust the Wolf by Zoe Ashwood
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Zoe Ashwood’s TRUST THE WOLF, is a wonderful start to the Shift series. Jason Evans is a Shade for SANA (Shifter Assembly of North America). His job is to report shifters without ID, but when he meets Emilia Vega, he doesn’t have it in him to turn her in. However, after discovering who she is, he needs to come clean.

TRUST THE WOLF was a fun and entertaining read. I enjoyed the plot. Zoe Ashwood did a great job laying out the shifter world politics. A lot of interesting and unexpected things occur during this story. Jason and Emilia are likable characters. Jason is a great guy. He is protective and strong. Emilia’s life has been turned upside-down. She handles it with grace and adapts well.

TRUST THE WOLF was skillfully written. The novel was fast-paced and kept me engaged. I’m interested in reading book two, TRUTH OR BEAR. I voluntarily reviewed an advance reader copy of this book.

Angle Play (Venom #4) by V.L. Locey Review

Angle Play (Venom #4)Angle Play by V.L. Locey
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

V.L. Locey adds another great story to the Venom series. Goalie, Stephanie Huschuk, is competing for the starting position on the Philadelphia Venom. She might jeopardize her chances because of her involvement with Professor Greg Blue Blanket, the twin brother of her goalie coach, Alice Dunlop. This contemporary sports romance is suitable for adult audiences.

I was looking forward to reading Stephanie’s and Professor Blue Blanket’s story. There is no denying the couple has great chemistry. Greg is over twenty years older than Stephanie. Despite their age difference, the couple has a lot in common. They both grew up poor. They are both athletic. They like classical music. They enjoy the same movies. They are extremely compatible. That being said, they do have a number of obstacles they need to face.

I love that Stephanie sends video text to her brother, John, all the time. The two have a wonderful relationship. I like that Stephanie is good to her family.

The hockey aspect of the story was great. I love the goalie quirks. The game play was well described. I love that Veikko mentors Stephanie, and that he left her an inspirational note. I appreciate that Alice Dunlop was one of Stephanie’s idols growing up. That makes the situation in between them more interesting.

We discover a nicer side to Whitney in this book. I look forward to her story.

There was a choice in this story that Stephanie made that disappointed me. However, I understand her reasoning and respected her decision. I also, appreciated Greg and how he handles the situation. He is a good guy. I am impressed that V. L. Locey chose to write about this sensitive topic. Her stories are very realistic and compelling, dealing with real-world issues. ANGLE PLAY is a moving and heartfelt story that is worthy of the Venom series. I voluntarily reviewed an advance reader copy of this book.

BOARDED BY LOVE

(Bellevue Bullies #1)

17448422Jude Sinclair here, hockey player for the Bellevue Bullies and lover of all ladies. Hockey’s in my blood, and not to sound full of myself, but I’m good at it…really good. The draft is within my reach—it’s mine to take—but that’s not the only reason people know my name. They know me because of my way with women. They know the score, and I aim to please. I just tend to stay away from repeat performances. In other words, I don’t do relationships beyond my family and friends. I’m happy with life. However, I should warn you that my story and how I see it playing out is about to change due to a certain redhead on campus.
She’s beautiful. Stunning. Breathtaking.
She’s my game changer.
*** He’s trouble from the moment I see him. I don’t know what I’m thinking, but from the moment I meet his gaze, I’m his. It’s a scary feeling.
I’ve never trusted anyone outside my aunt and uncle—and even that took months. I didn’t have it easy growing up. My mom was usually strung out, and she didn’t give me a second thought. Drugs and the men who paid her were more important to her. It was horrible, but I’m stronger today. Because of my past, security is what I need most. Money assures me that I can take care of myself today, tomorrow, and next month. I don’t want to ever be hungry or go without again, so I work hard for every penny.
Oh, by the way, I’m Claire Anderson. I’m a hard-studying sophomore at the University of Bellevue, dancer for the school dance team, and a burlesque dancer at a club, but that’s my secret.
You may think you know how our story ends, but you have no clue. It’s not easy falling in love… or living happily ever after. At first it may seem so, but when is anything worth having ever won without a fight?
Especially when you’re boarded by love.

CLIPPED BY LOVE

(Bellevue Bullies #2)

23172090Things are heating up for the Sinclair boys! With one already in the NHL, Jayden Sinclair is hoping to be next!
This has been the toughest year of my life. I watched my brother go into the draft without me, my mom got divorced, and the weight of my family’s issues is heavy on my shoulders. I feel like it’s my job to fix everything while working my butt off in school and trying to make my game better. I have to go into the draft. It will give my family the support they need, and it will prove that I’m good enough. But to get there, I have to show I can be the best captain for the Bellevue Bullies. The spot is mine—no one can take it. First though, Jude is making me go on a brother’s weekend. Innocent enough, I guess…until I see her. She’s the biggest competitor I’ve ever faced. Not only for my spot but also my heart. It’s hard to ignore someone like Baylor Moore.
***
I don’t lose. I can’t. My dad has bred me to be the best in anything I do. I am driven, I am smart, and I am going to be the first woman in the National Hockey League. No two ways about it. I’ve worked too hard. I’ve been through too much not to have what I want. I know I can do it. I will make my dad proud, and no one will stand in the way of that. That is, until I let him in. He scares me. He makes me feel. And he could very well be the one person who can make me want more than just to win.
We both have the same goal. Victory. But how do you compete against the person you want to win? It’s not easy. Love isn’t something you can control. It isn’t like a puck that can be handled by a stick.
No, it has a mind of its own and does what it wants. Neither of us saw it coming, and we really don’t know if there is a way to score, especially when you’re being Clipped by Love.

HOOKED BY LOVE

(Bellevue Bullies #3)

Hooked by Love-high

COVER PHOTOGRAPHY || SARA EIREW

COVER DESIGN || REGINA WAMBA

Things are out of control for the Sinclair boys! With two already in the NHL, Jace Sinclair is ready to follow in his brothers’ HUGE skates in the last Bellevue Bullies novel…
Jace Sinclair here, and I’m amazing. There is no other way to describe me. I am the leading scorer for the Bellevue Bullies, I’m the captain, and people love me: my family, my teammates, my coach, and the NHL. This is my last year in college–I already have one foot in the draft. Hockey keeps me warm even when it’s freezing. It’s always there when nothing else is. And it pushes me to be the best I can be. It’s my one and only love.
That is, until I see her against a tree with a guitar.
Avery.
The last thing I wanted was to meet anyone. My heart is on the bench because of what happened with my parents, and I don’t want that for myself. I don’t want to be hurt by anyone. I can’t give them that power.
But my heart is begging for ice time, and I can’t control it around her.
* * *
I’ve always been in the background. No one has ever had time for me and that’s fine; I’ve learned to cope. Coming from a family where hockey is life, the last thing I want is some big, burly hockey player charging at me. I don’t have time for it, but Jace Sinclair isn’t one to be deked around.
I didn’t want to meet anyone. I didn’t want to end up freezing the puck with him. It’s not what I want.
I have demons.
I have issues.
Living in the shadows, no one even knew until it was too late. But Jace wants to know. He wants me.
And that scares me the living hell out of me.
We were so worried about what would happen if we fell, but we never thought what could happen in the process of falling. We never saw it coming. But it’s here, and the repercussions are not pretty.
We should have known that there is no way out of the zone when you are being Hooked by Love.

Primal (Wild Heart Chronicles #1) by Lucy Auburn Review

Primal (Wild Heart Chronicles #1)Primal by Lucy Auburn
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

4 ½ of 5 Stars

Mara Finn decides to have a one-night stand with dangerous bad boy, Ryker, whom she meets at a bar. The last thing she expects is for him to be a TA in one of her college courses. She cannot help getting the feeling that there is more to Ryker then meets the eye.

Primal was a fascinating shape shifter story that was unique and exciting. I could totally see this book as a television series on The CW, one that I would religiously watch.

I really like Mara. I related to her because she was an art major. I started out as an art major before I switched to Industrial Design, so I got the classes, especially figure drawing. Mara is almost the opposite of Ryker, more reserved.

Ryker is completely captivating. He definitely has the bad-boy image perfected. He is mysterious and protective. He has had a difficult life making me appreciate his character. Mara and Ryker have an intense chemistry.

Lucy Auburn did a fantastic job creating a new and exciting supernatural world that takes place in Belmont City. Her descriptions are vivid. Her plot is clever, mysterious, and thrilling. The way humans turn into shape shifters is extremely original. I will anxiously be waiting the next book from the series.

Ravaged (Eternal Guardians #7.5) by Elisabeth Naughton Review

Ravaged (Eternal Guardians, #7.5)Ravaged by Elisabeth Naughton
My rating: 4 ½ of 5 stars

Zeus tasks nymph/siren-in-training, Daphne, to kill former Eternal Guardian, Aristokler (Ari).

Ravaged is an exciting and creative novella worthy of Eternal Guardians Series.

Daphne is a determined and persistent heroine. She is sweet and likable. She finds out some interesting things about her past and is good support for Ari.

Ari is a worthy hero. Not wanting to hurt the ones he cares about by continually having to witness his curse, he fakes his death. He has good intentions. He has suffered greatly at the hands of the gods.

Sappheire and Silas are good friends to both Daphne and Ari. I liked how the two got along with each other throughout the story.

Zeus is about as worthy of an adversary that you can get. You never know what the conniving god has up his sleeve.

I was impressed by all the details and action packed into this novella. Elisabeth Naughton is a dedicated writer who always amazes me. She continues to successfully create a contemporary continuation of Greek mythology.

The ending was really interesting. I cannot wait to find out what happens in the next book.

The Shameless Hour (The Ivy Years #4) by Sarina Bowen Review

The Shameless Hour (The Ivy Years, #4)The Shameless Hour by Sarina Bowen
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Harkness men’s hockey team manager, Bella Hall, becomes a victim of a fraternity prank. Her soccer player neighbor, Rafe Santiago, helps her through the aftermath.

Bella is a great character. She had a wonderful outlook on life and was free spirited. My heart went out to her after what happened at Beta Rho. No one should be treated the way she was. It was understandable how her ordeal made her feel and become antisocial. On a positive note, she developed two great friends as a result of her misfortune, Rafe and Lianne. When Bella becomes withdrawn, I love that Rafe and her hockey friends are persistent in getting her to go out and do not give up on her.

If you were to look up perfect boyfriend in the dictionary, I’m pretty sure you would find Rafe. Heck, I’m fairly certain he would also be listed under perfect son. When he is available, the guy is always working in his mother’s restaurant. Not to mention quoting chick flicks throughout the novel, because he watches them with his mom. He is a great guy. He loves his family. He is an athlete. He works hard at everything he does. He is passionate and caring. He is a great friend/boyfriend for Bella. I cannot really find any faults in the guy. Sure there may have been a couple of misunderstandings, but he is human.

The characters showed a lot of growth throughout the story. Especially Bella who had no idea what she wanted to do with her life after graduation and suffered greatly.

The plot was realistic and meaningful. Unfortunately, things like this happen in the real world. Reading about Bella’s struggles was moving and inspirational. I appreciate that she takes a stand. She was very creative in her payback.

Sarina Bowen is a gifted writer. The Shameless Hour is a book I could not put down. The story is full of emotion and obstacles. I can’t wait for Lianne’s story.

Shadow Hunter (Execution Underground 0.5) by Kait Ballenger

Shadow Hunter (Execution Underground, #0.5)Shadow Hunter by Kait Ballenger
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Vampire hunter Damon Brock works for the Execution Underground in Rochester, New York. While chasing down the vampire that killed his partner, Mark Solow, he stumbles upon the girl who has haunted his dreams, Tiffany Solow, Mark’s sister.

Damon is a great character. He blames himself for his partner’s death even though it is not his fault. He is tormented and protective. I could see him becoming a good leader in the future.

Tiffany is brave. Even though she doesn’t have formal training, she hunts the creatures that killed her family. She is grief-stricken about Mark’s death and Damon’s involvement. I like that she is open-minded and gives Damon another chance.

The story is well-written and interesting. It has multiple unexpected twists that kept me attentive. The ending killed me. It definitely made me want to read the rest of the series. Shadow Hunter seems like is an excellent foundation for the rest of the series. After reading this book, I want to check out the rest of the series.

Bonds of Courage (Wicked Play #6) by Lynda Aicher

Bonds of Courage (Wicked Play, #6)Bonds of Courage by Lynda Aicher
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Bonds of Courage (Wicked Play #6) by Lynda Aicher

Professional hockey player for the Minnesota Glaciers Holden Hauke, has been denying his sexual needs due to that damage it could do to his career. He thinks he finds the perfect Domme, Vanessa Delcour, who knows how important discretion is for him. Now he just needs to convince her.

Holden is a likeable character. He knows he is a submissive but has been denying himself due to a photo that was leaked of him almost damaging his career. He is persistent, but not overbearing. I like that he is a genuinely nice guy who wants to give back to the community.

Venessa is a strong heroine. To those that don’t know her, she is “the Ice Queen” but she is guarded due to her profession and being hurt in the past. It is easy to see how she became a Domme, making her character realistic.

I love the psychological aspect of Bonds of Courage. It is fascinating how the characters read each other. I felt this was the strongest facet of the story.

The plot is believable. Male athletes have a perception to uphold. Being a submissive would not fit that mold even though it could be argued that a submissive is actually strong. I liked that there was more to the plot then sex. There are a lot of real-life examples that happen that make you understand the characters better.

Hidden Destiny (Redwood Pack #6) by Carrie Ann Ryan Review

Hidden Destiny (Redwood Pack, #6)Hidden Destiny by Carrie Ann Ryan
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Latent wolf, Lexi Anderson, has become a recent member of the Redwood pack after being exiled from the Talon pack for a fault not her own. She was raped by Corbin Reyes, the new alpha of the central pack, leaving her with a son, Parker, and half a mating bond.

North Jamenson is the last of the brothers without a mate. He knows that the newest member of the Redwood pack, Lexi, is his. He also knows that it is prophesied that he is destined to kill Corbin Reyes. Problem is the prophecy didn’t say whether or not he will survive.

This was my favorite book in the series so far. The story keeps getting better.

Lexi and North complement each other well and overcome obstacles. They stick it out together even though they cannot be bonded as long as Corbin is alive.

I love that North accepts Parker as his son despite him being the son of his pack’s enemy. He assures him that everyone will accept him regardless.

I also appreciate that characters from the previous books are prevalent through the book. Carrie Ann Ryan does a fantastic job in the character development, making it easy to distinguish between characters through the dialog.

I enjoyed the side story of Parker trying to set up his uncle Logan with North’s sister Cailin. I Can’t wait to read about the results of Parker’s match making skills in Fighting Fate. I’m sad there is only one more full-length book left. At least, we can look forward to the remaining novellas, and it is good thing I’m a re-reader. I think the books would be even better the second time around.

EXCERPT:

I shook my head and glanced around the club. Runt was right about one thing: the kids who frequented this place were loaded. Most of them were wearing top notch designer clothes and sporting hundred dollar haircuts. I grew up dirt poor, lucky to have second hand clothes from the donation bin and the occasional coupon-day haircut at Super Cuts. Even now, I didn’t like to waste money even though I was earning good coin. I knew there was a big chance my hockey career could be cut short, so I saved as much as I could for my future, which I hoped would someday be a sports bar, if I saved enough and was smart with investing.
As I glanced around the bar at the sea of perfect young faces, I spotted a girl sitting by herself at a small table in the corner. She was looking in my direction but when our eyes met, she quickly looked down and started reading a book.
What the hell?
Who reads a book in a bar, I wondered. I was intrigued.
The first thing I noticed about her was her beautiful wavy brown hair. The long waves were tucked behind her ears, which were decorated with a single pink pearl in each center. She was wearing a flowered blouse tied over a black tank top and a long black skirt. It was such an odd outfit to be wearing at a bar. She looked like she was ready for a stroll through a museum or art gallery. Most girls at bars tried to show as much skin and body parts as humanly possible. They left little to the imagination. But this girl had her arms and legs completely covered.
I could tell she was different and I wanted to know why.
I tipped back the rest of my beer, put the empty glass on the bar and made my way over to the girl. I just couldn’t get over the fact she was reading a book in a bar. It was such a strange sight. As I got closer, I noticed the book was a lot thicker than I initially thought. A textbook? Who studies at a bar?
She didn’t even have a drink in front of her. She was just intent on reading her book.
I stood next to her table and cleared my throat to get her attention. When she glanced up at me, her expression was neutral.
“Hey,” I said and gave her a quick smile.
She just stared at me. I have to admit, it kind of freaked me out. I was used to girls doing most of the work. Usually all I had to do was decide if I wanted to take them home or not.
Her hazel brown eyes were completely captivating. I felt like I was swimming in the deep end of two delicious pools. I gulped and suddenly couldn’t think of anything to say. The girl made me nervous and I never got nervous. All I could do was stare into her beautiful brown eyes.
“What do you want?” she said finally. The question wasn’t mean; it was like she was really curious why I was standing there.
“I was just wondering what you were reading.” As soon as the words came out of my mouth, I knew I sounded like a complete asshole.
And why was I second guessing myself? That was not like me at all. From the time I was fourteen, and started to really show off on the ice, girls dropped their panties for me with little more than a wink and a winning smile on my part.

But this girl was different. When she looked at me, it was like she was looking right through me, like she could see into every part of my mind and soul. And that scared the hell out of me because there was a lot going on in there that I never wanted anyone to see.

Fire on Ice (Fire on Ice #1)Fire on Ice by Dakota Madison
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Kian Kavanagh is the center the Firestorm, a new professional hockey team in Northern Arizona. He has his choice of women but is intrigued by the college girl who is studying at the local bar.

Taylor Thompson was traumatized by her high school hockey player boyfriend. She hasn’t dated anyone in the three years since they broke up concentrating on her major.

The two seem like an unlikely couple but can they deny their attraction for one another?

I loved this book. Dakota Madison did a spectacular job in describing Kian and Taylor’s emotions. Her primary and secondary characters are multidimensional giving the book a remarkable and believable story.

I read this book in one sitting and did not want it to end. I was so glad that there is a sequel, The Playmaker.

Interview with Characters from The Megalith Union:

The lights are off, the cameras have taken in all they can, and the story is ready for print.  I caught up with a few of the stars of The Megalith Union and was able to ask them a few serious and silly questions about their experiences in making the follow up to a best seller.  Some of their answers may surprise you.

Lizzie O’Neal

What was the best part about coming back for a sequel?

The best part for me was getting to see everyone again.   I missed Biddy and Rory so much, but it was very special to get to do this again.  Oh, and I liked being able to swing the bo staff again.  That was fun.

We see an amazing amount of growth for you in this story, what was that like for you?

This was basically my coming of age story.  I mean, really I got to step into more of a leadership role, which is important because I want to encourage other young women to do the same, you know. Just be confidant in who you are and show that you too can do something amazing.

So, you have a love interest in this story.  What were your thoughts about that?

Okay, starting to get personal.  Really, it’s just that I’m growing up and luckily Frank has been a great boyfriend.  Dad and Brendan seem to approve and I hate to admit it, but that’s pretty important to me.  I think they know that I can kick his butt if I need to, so they don’t have to worry.

Brendan O’Neal

Two stories, huh?  What has that meant to you?

I know it’s crazy.  We were surprised when our first story was told, but to get to tell the rest of the story is amazing!  It means so much to us that our story was told to begin with.  Most people would not of had a clue that anything like this happened, but I think it’s important that they do.

There are several new characters that have come into the story.  Talk a little about what they bring to the table.

We were lucky to add a cast of newbies that are so different from the characters in the first story.  Frank, Garnash, Ken, the Smith sisters each play a key role in the story and I think it’s safe to say that the story couldn’t be told without them.

What was the craziest moment for you in The Megalith Union?

I can’t go into detail about it since I don’t want to spoil anything for anyone, but when I came face to face with Elathan has to be that moment for me.  There are a lot of crazy things that happen in this story, but for me personally, yeah, it has to be that moment.

Garnash

What was your reaction when you heard that you and your Gnome clan were going to be included in the sequel?

I felt it was only right.  We are a big part of what happened, so people should know about us.  That being said, I loved reading The Obsidian Dagger so I’m glad we got to continue the story.

What was something that surprised you about Brendan?

He’s the world’s protector, right?  The guy is gaining the power of a god, okay, but he can’t seem go a day without having a Coke.  (Laughs).  He gets really irritable without his caffeine, I guess.

Most people have not heard about the Descendants of Magog, so could you share a little something about them?

They are the Gnomes’ sworn enemies.  They are a mean, nasty clan that has an ego the size of the moon.  They love to kill and they have these animals called Alphyns that are just as violent and nasty as they are.

Frank

I have to know what you were thinking when you first learned about the magicks that live here.

I can’t begin to describe what was going on in my head when I first laid eyes on the Ruas.  Red-eyes, gnashing teeth…moving like funky spiders on the ceiling…  How can a person really prepare himself for something like that?  I guess I’d say stunned and numb would describe it best.

In your opinion, who is the funniest character in this sequel?

Garnash is always cutting up and joking.  He’s got that British wit that can catch you off guard and the next thing you know you sides are hurting because he’s making you laugh.

What was the most intense moment for you in The Megalith Union?

The most intense moment, wow, that’s like asking which dollar bill is my favorite if I was a millionaire, there are just so many things that happen to us in this story.  I guess I would have to say fighting the Magogs.  It’s hard to get more intense that fighting giants.

Dorian

I didn’t get to ask Brendan this, but talk a little about you relationship with him.

Relationships are complicated already, but when you factor in that he is human and I am Leprechaun, we’re talking about a whole new level.  We’re like any other couple, though, we have our ups and downs, but in the end you want to come out stronger, and I think we’ve done that.

I’m glad you brought up being a Leprechaun, so many people might ask how you can be the size of an averaged-size human and the rest of your clan are more of the average-sized Leprechaun?

That’s a good question.  I’m not sure of the legend behind it, but the short version of the story is that since I am in the royal bloodline of the Leprechauns I am able to change my size at will.  I can essentially be at Leprechaun height or human height.  My father would mostly stay in Leprechaun size, but I have needed to be out among humans so I typically stay at human height.

What’s different about The Megalith Union and The Obsidian Dagger?

For a reader to get the full picture they need to read The Obsidian Dagger since it sets the stage for everything that followed, but once they get to The Megalith Union they are in for tons of action, twists, more vile enemies, and an ending that might surprise many.

Well, be sure to check out The Obsidian Dagger and The Megalith Union (due out October 24, 2013) and prepare for the adventure.  Be sure to look out for the third book, The Dominion Pulse  in 2014.

My Review:

The Megalith Union (Celtic Mythos, #2)The Megalith Union by Brad LaMar
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Brendan O’Neal is going away to his freshman year of college at Syracuse University as a pre-me major, on a soccer scholarship. He is continuing his long-distance relationship with Leprechaun Queen Dorian. Brendan thought his life calmed down from his adventure in Ireland the previous summer.

Turned out evil is never far away, and the gang will be back together to fight it along with the help of some new friends. They need to rescue Brendan’s father, protect Corways, and save the world – no pressure.

Brad LaMar does a considerable job combining old myths in modern society. This fascinating tale is a wonderful book for Middle grade through Adult. Anyone who appreciates mythology and fantasy would enjoy this series. Celtic Mythos would make a great movie.
