About Kait:

Kait Ballenger is a full-time romance author, wife, a former professional bellydancer, and soon-to-be-professor. She is the multi-published author of the Execution Underground paranormal romance series about an international network of supernatural hunters who fight to protect humanity.
With a B.A in English from Stetson University (2011), Kait is graduate of Spalding University’s M.F.A in Writing for Children and Young Adults program (2013), where she studied dual-genre in screenwriting.
When Kait’s not preoccupied with paranormal creepy-crawlies, she can be found spending time with her family or with her nose buried in a book. She lives in Florida with her husband, their doggie-daughter Sookie (yes, like the heroine in Charlainne Harris’ books), and two mischievous cats Elliot and Olivia (yes, like the Law and Order characters), near the love and care of her supportive family. Kait believes anything is possible with hard work and dedication. One day, she will be a bestseller and have people name their pets after her characters too.
She is represented by Nicole Resciniti of The Seymour Agency.

Interview:

Please welcome Shadow Hunter author Kait Ballenger to Diane's Book Blog.

What is your favorite part of Shadow Hunter?

I have two favorite parts. The heart-wrenching moment when Tiffany sits out on her fire escape and finally reads all the letters she never opened from Damon, and the ending. I like both of those scenes, because I find them emotionally gut-wrenching and as a reader there’s nothing I love more than when a book can make me cry for the character’s pain. I still remember the moment when I read my editor’s comments about the ending and she wrote that it was “indelible!” That was a proud moment for me as a writer.

How long did it take you to write Shadow Hunter?

When I first wrote Shadow Hunter, it was being released in an anthology titled After Dark alongside a Lords of the Underworld novella by NYT and USA Today Bestseller Gena Showalter, so I was on a very tight deadline in order to make it into the anthology. I had to write the first draft in just one month. It went through many edits after that though. I’m so excited for it to be releasing as a stand-alone for just .99 cents!

If you were stranded on a desert island which of your characters do you want by your side?

Though he doesn’t appear in Shadow Hunter other than just a mention, I would probably want Ash Devereaux with me. He’s a ghost hunter, which has nothing to do with deserted islands, but he grew up in the Louisiana bayou. All my other guys in the group are Northerners from the big city, so I think Ash would be best at surviving in a jungle atmosphere. Then again, Trent Garrison, who is the resident hunter of shapeshifters, is an ex-military man, so he would be pretty well versed in survival as well.

What is your favorite book that you wrote?

Probably this one. I love the richness of Tiffany and Damon’s background and relationship. Plus, I love a really tortured hero and Damon is that to a tee. I also can’t wait to revisit their story again when they get a full book of their own later down the line.

What's your favorite book-turned movie?

The Notebook, because it’s the only time I’ve ever enjoyed the movie more than the book. I also think The Hunger Games movies are really well done, and of course, the earlier Harry Potter movies.

Can you share a little of your current work with us?

Sure. Currently, I’m in the midst of finishing up the last bits of Midnight Hunter, which is the third full length book in the Execution Underground series (fourth in the series, if you count Shadow Hunter). I’ll share the first few lines.

“Red, white, and blue lights flashed through the encompassing darkness. The dead silence of Mt. Hope cemetery shattered with the resounding whoop of the Rochester P.D’s car siren. Shane swore. In two seconds flat, thanks to the police’s arrival, the night had transitioned from shit to super shit. Because as much as Dr. Shane Grey hated digging up dead bodies, he hated getting pinched by the cops even more. From the looks of it, both were on tonight’s menu.”

What book are you reading now?

I’m currently reading book number five, Born Wild, in the Black Knight’s Inc series by the lovely Julie Ann Walker. I picked up the series since she and I share the same agent, but Julie is incredibly talented. If you like romantic suspense, her books are a must read. I’m hooked.

What do you prefer paperback, hardcover, or ebooks?

I like all three and I read in all formats, but trade paperback is my favorite ;-)

Shadow Hunter (Execution Underground, #0.5)Shadow Hunter by Kait Ballenger
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Vampire hunter Damon Brock works for the Execution Underground in Rochester, New York. While chasing down the vampire that killed his partner, Mark Solow, he stumbles upon the girl who has haunted his dreams, Tiffany Solow, Mark’s sister.

Damon is a great character. He blames himself for his partner’s death even though it is not his fault. He is tormented and protective. I could see him becoming a good leader in the future.

Tiffany is brave. Even though she doesn’t have formal training, she hunts the creatures that killed her family. She is grief-stricken about Mark’s death and Damon’s involvement. I like that she is open-minded and gives Damon another chance.

The story is well-written and interesting. It has multiple unexpected twists that kept me attentive. The ending killed me. It definitely made me want to read the rest of the series. Shadow Hunter seems like is an excellent foundation for the rest of the series. After reading this book, I want to check out the rest of the series.
