Interview 

Please welcome Dark Protectors Series author Rebecca Zanetti to Diane's Book Blog.

Thank you so much for having me here, Diane!  It’s a pleasure to pop by and play.  The interview questions were wonderful and a lot of fun to answer.

If you were stranded on a desert island which of your characters do you want by your side? 

This is a great question.  I’d probably want Dage Kayrs, the king, (Claimed) to be by my side because he’s hot, dangerous, protective…and he can also teleport.  J  So we might play at the beach for a while, but he could always transport me home in time for dinner.

What is your typical day like?  

You know, that’s a tough one right now because we’re so busy at home.  So I kept track today just for fun.  I spend a lot of time answering emails, writing new content, and driving kids around.  And laundry.  Definitely…laundry.  Oh, I also drink two home-made lattes with almond milk – yum!  I also try to talk to my mom and sisters at least on the phone once a day or so…if we don’t meet up for lunch or something.   Other than that, I’m under a deadline, so I’m typing away.

How do you overcome writer’s block?

I sit down and write.  With three publishers and now five ongoing series, I have to sit down and write.  I’ve signed contracts and have definite deadlines, so I have to meet them.  Writers write.  J

What inspired you to write your first book?

You know, I always wanted to be a writer, and figured one day I should give it a shot.  It was the winter of 2009, and we were snowed in.  Seriously snowed in, so it just seemed like time.  I had just seen Twilight, and I really liked it, so I figured I’d write a young adult book about demigods.  It was truly terrible, but I started working on craft and discovered I’d rather write adult romances.  I sold Fated, the first Dark Protector book, in December of 2009 to Kensington publishing.  Once I started writing, I couldn’t stop.  So here we are, and I’m having a ball.

Can you share a little of your current work with us?

Absolutely!  I’m working on a brand new series called The Scorpius Syndrome that’s sexy, gritty, and suspenseful.  We’re opening it with a novella called ‘Scorpius Rising,’ which will be in the On the Hunt anthology next August.  The novella features Nora Medina, a brilliant microbiologist, and her ex-husband, Deacan McDougall, who’s a soldier trying to protect the world from a deadly bacteria.  Things get heated and quickly.

Do you have anything specific that you want to say to your readers?

I’d really like to say thank you.  For all the support, the wonderful reviews, and the touching emails, I can’t express my gratitude enough.  It means more than I can say.

She assigned it to Zack, my partner, a dark, rugged werewolf who was formerly, and quite secretly, a badass black ops assassin. Now, like me, he spends his days working for the FBI and searching for the missing.

I feel Kallistos’ irritation at the interruption. I pat his hand. “Hold that thought,” I say, then reach for my phone.

“Zack. It’s early. What’s up?”

“Jimmy. He wants to see us right away and apparently you haven’t been answering your texts.”

I glance at the clock on the nightstand. It’s just past seven on a Monday and I’ve managed to piss off the boss. “Why didn’t he just call me?”

“He did. Twice.”

“Damn it! I must have slept through it.”

Or, Kallistos had taken it upon himself to set my cell to silent. Again. Thanks to Liz’s spell, and much to Kallistos’ chagrin, Zack’s calls ring through regardless. Liz knows how close Zack and I came to disaster. This is her special way of reminding me of the ever-present dan- ger. She’s also the main reason I’m sharing the vampire 

King’s bed now. She encouraged him and pushed me like a veritable yenta. After countless protests they wore me down. I decided to give the no-strings-attached relation- ship proposal a trial run.

Kallistos has retreated to the other side of the bed. I’d like to think out of guilt, but I know better.

I momentarily mute the call. “Stop silencing my phone,” I scold.

His clear blue eyes give nothing away. “You don’t get enough rest.” His tone is matter-of-fact. No argument. No apology. Not ever. Admittedly, it’s one of the down- sides of dating a vampire King with more than a millen- nium under his belt—one that I’ll eventually have to address if our arrangement continues. Eventually. But not today.

“You don’t get to make decisions for me,” I counter.

He answers my rising ire with a disarming smile. “You need coffee, Emma. I’ll call down.”

I unmute the phone, turning my attention back to Zack. “How much time do I have?”

“The briefing was scheduled for seven thirty. Remind- ing Jimmy it was Labor Day got us a reprieve until eight.”

I brace myself, knowing I shouldn’t ask, but do any- way. “Did you and Sarah have plans?”

My question about Sarah, the she-wolf who shares Zack’s beach house, is met with the expected pause. Zack doesn’t say much about his private life. His reluc- tance doesn’t have anything to do with our history. As far as he’s concerned, we have no history; there’s never been anything personal between us at all. Thanks to Liz’s super-duper spell casting, Zack’s memories of those times have been erased. Not all of them, of course; only the ones indicating there had ever been any physical intimacy between us. Our casework history, secrets shared about our natures and pasts, that’s all remained intact. But remembrances of our one, glorious night in Charles- ton and the fact we became lovers after his move here to San Diego a year later? Gone.

Kallistos climbs out of bed and heads for the balcony. “Maybe the four of us can do something together later,” he murmurs on the way.

I throw a pillow at him, but miss by a mile. By the time it hits the floor he’s outside and, thanks to a little pink pill called Protectus, appreciating the early-morning sun like only someone who’s spent more than a thousand years in darkness could—face tilted up, eyes closed. Kallistos is responsible for the creation of Protectus, part medical miracle and part magic. It’s been around for a couple de- cades now, along with the Blood Emporiums he created.

Most Emporiums are located in the backs of busi- nesses catering to those who pursue alternative life- styles—tattoo shops and heavy-metal clubs. For vampires they offer fresh blood from paid donors who, for the most part, have no idea where the blood ends up or who is paying for it. Would-be vampires and goths simply be- lieve they are indulging in a fantasy. They never see the real vampires who come to buy their blood bags and the drugs that allow them to function during the day.

I watch my lover breathe deeply of the ocean air. Ap- preciate the way shadow and light play across his body, which is hard, lean, and eternally young.

“I was going to make my famous London broil,” Zack finally volunteers. “But, duty calls. Right, partner?”

Zack has a way of saying the word partner like it really means something. And it does. A lump forms in my throat. Our reasons may be different, but the mission is the same. Zack understands me better than any partner I’ve had.

I nod. “Yes. Duty calls.”

“I’ll let Jimmy know we’re on our way in.”

“I’ll meet you at the office in forty-five minutes.” As I hang up, I silently recite the same words I do every time I go out on a new case. Redemption could be one rescue away.

What is your favorite part of the Dark Wolf Enterprises Series?

I love this world. I love alpha men and these wolf-shifters. You can expect the men of this world to be strong, loyal and fiercely protective. The women that are paired with them have to match them in both spirit and energy. I can’t wait to delve deeper into this world and explore the other characters inside of Dark Wolf Enterprises the business as well as their associates.

If you were stranded on a desert island which of your characters do you want by your side?

I’d want Andras, the Alpha and CEO of Dark Wolf Enterprises. He has the ability to call out to the others in his pack with his mind and he’s also hot. We’ll need to pass the time waiting for a rescue some way… lol

If you could be best friends with one of your characters, who would it be?

Meisha Komano from Lover Claimed. She is hilarious! She’s snappy and feisty and she has no filter. What she thinks just spills from her mouth and she just has a “deal with it attitude”. I’d love her as a friend. We could be two girls hanging out, not mincing words and having fun.

What is your favorite book that you wrote?

I love all my books and they each hold a special part in my heart, but right now I love Lover Claimed. I love both Lajos and Meisha and I think they’re perfect for each other. She’s head strong and ready to fight and he’s just the same. I feel sorry for Andras for having the job of reining these two in.

Can you share a little of your current work with us?

In Dark Wolf Enterprises, Lajos Farkas, the youngest of the Farkas brothers leaves his big brother Kristof of Krisotf’s new mate Trudy at her house. Lajos has two job given to him; drop Trudy’s dog off at her best friend’s house and then go to Trudy’s business to look for clues about the other shifters that attacked her. He thought dropping her dog off at her best friend’s Meisha’s house was going to be the easy duty. It’s not. He meets Meisha, and sparks fly immediately. She kicks his butt and ties him up. I crush on her so hard.

Do you have anything specific that you want to say to your readers?
