NEVER HIRE A HANDSOME VAMPIRE!

MIRIAM MURPHY loves being a librarian. It’s all she’s ever wanted—to eat, breathe, and sleep books. But when she hired Michael, a handsome college student, she had no idea he was a four-hundred-year-old vampire and that inviting him into her life would result in her becoming one too. But not before he knocked her up and broke her heart.

Now Miriam is a single mother, all alone in a new world with a new vampire body. And someone’s trying to kill her. Who? Why? She has no real enemies.

If only Michael would help. After all, he’s the vampire king now. And this is one mystery she can’t solve on her own.

NEVER FALL FOR A LIBRARIAN!

MICHAEL VANDERHORST knows he’s changed. He can no longer love or laugh or enjoy hot peppers like he used to. But being an unfeeling, ruthless vampire is what it takes to rule the deadliest bloodsuckers on the planet. It’s the only way to keep humankind safe.

Problem is, his enemies know the librarian and his daughter are special to him. They are his to protect, even if he’s incapable of feeling love.

But when danger comes knocking at Miriam’s library door, he must choose between solving the biggest mystery of his existence and the woman he swore to protect.

What’s a vampire king to do?

Excerpt

My parents started this library and filled it with millions of dollars of books. Three floors. Open in the middle—same as our house—overlooking the main floor. When I wasn’t in school or training to be a Keeper, I was here, losing myself in books. I think I always knew I wanted to be a librarian, but it just took a while to work up the courage to tell my family. Of course, when I did, they acted like I’d told them I wanted to be a porn star or bank robber.

To this day, I don’t regret my choice, but I do regret how my parents were murdered before I could convince them that choosing another path in life didn’t mean I hated them. They died thinking the worst of me, and for that, I don’t think I’ll ever feel closure.

I pull into the parking lot to the side of my library and immediately go for my crossbow. The big one this time. Bertha.

There are four black SUVs in the lot and two parked out front on the busy street at the meters. I know it isn’t Nice, which is why I grab the chocolate-tipped arrow. I make them myself with pure cocoa powder and a flour paste so the tip hardens just enough to penetrate the skin. Vampire skin.

Chocolate is a narcotic for us. Give us enough, and it’ll kill, whereas a small dose has the same effect as alcohol. I’ve yet to sample any since being turned because I’ve been alone with Stella and must be on my guard. Mommy can’t get a chocolate chip cookie buzz until she finds a ninja sitter.

I take my crossbow and exit my Hummer. I might be a librarian, but when it comes to defending my child, I’m a one-woman army. Ready to kick fangs or asses. The ill-fitting, disheveled clothes I wear—below-the-knee skirts, moth-eaten sweaters, and granny glasses—are merely a disguise. Today I have on a wrinkled white blouse, plain tan pants, and a black cardigan that’s all stretched out. People see me and think I couldn’t harm a fly or fight my way out of a paper bag. All part of my Keeper upbringing. Unfortunately, my natural clumsiness is genuine, and so is my lack of love for violence. I can fight, and fight well. It’s just not something that comes naturally or that I enjoy. Even when I was Nice’s prisoner, fear always held me back. And he knew just how to use it to keep me tethered to his side, reading bad poetry, helping him shop online for ruffled shirts, telling him how much I admired his wiry body and long black locks.

The man is a monster.

At least I wasn’t mistreated sexually. Mr. Nice has a rule about not sleeping with humans (apparently they’re too fragile for his bedroom games), but he kept Stella from me. Those are years lost with my daughter, and I’ll never get them back. For that, he’ll pay.

How?

I’m not sure yet, but it’s coming. His day of reckoning for separating me from Michael and then my child, for driving Michael to become a cold-hearted vampire, and for turning me is coming. I love to read, and I’ve always believed a story is only as good as the bad guy. But in real life? The only good bad guy is a dead bad guy. This librarian is coming for you, Nice.

Now for this guy!

Bertha in hand, I pull on the front door of my library. My eyes meet his, and my heart starts hammering against my rib cage, like it’s calling out to him in longing. The sensation jars me and, in some way, shames me. I know he can hear it. Just like I can hear the lack of beating inside his chest. He couldn’t care less about seeing me. He feels nothing.

“What do you want, Michael?” I growl, keeping my weapon pointed at the ground. I know his guards are all around us, waiting to pounce.

“What do I want?” He points to his broad chest, and I try not to notice how good his tall, lean, muscular frame looks in his tailored black suit. Michael Vanderhorst was born over four hundred years ago, but if you saw him walking down the street today, you’d wonder where the Armani shoot was. And I’m not talking runway. I’m talking Christmastime cologne commercial. You know, the ripped, oiled-down guy with deep olive skin in a tight white Speedo, diving into a pristine turquoise ocean. Yeah. That Armani.

Despite being a vampire, Michael is everything hard and male and seductive, with a face that never ages. One look into those dark eyes, and you’re lost forever.

“Yes,” I repeat, “what do you want?”

“You summoned me,” he says in that deep, authoritative voice that doesn’t fit his youthful appearance. It was the one thing that first tipped me off about him not being human. No twenty-year-old I’ve ever met has a voice that can make my toes tingle.

I raise my crossbow and point it at his groin.

“What are you doing?” he growls with those sexy lips.

“I know you have at least a dozen guards surrounding me. Consider it my insurance.”

Michael unfolds his arms. “Mir-librarian-woman, you sent five of my men home in a shoebox. I hardly think you are the one at risk.”

I frown. “What are you talking about?” And why is he calling me Mir-librarian-woman?

His dark eyes narrow in puzzlement. “Please tell me it was you who summoned me.”

I blink, catching on to the situation.

Someone pretending to be me asked him to come here.

I hear a click somewhere in the room. Oh crap!

Before I can scream “run,” Michael charges faster than my new vampire eyes can register.

Kept on Ice (Mika Chalmers Hockey Mystery #2) by Heather C. Myers Review

Kept on Ice (Mika Chalmers Hockey Mystery #2)Kept on Ice by Heather C. Myers
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Heather C. Myers’ KEPT ON ICE is a gripping. In this story, Georgie Howie, enforcer of the Irvine Buccaneers is a suspect in the murder of his team’s rival Dave Probst. He hires Mika to prove his innocents, but she is determined to discover the truth. This contemporary hockey mystery is suitable for adult readers.

Heather C. Myers continues to do a nice job with this series. It is creative with unexpected twists. I enjoyed how she uncovered the history between the deceased and the accused. She does a nice job of revealing the mystery and keeping the story thrilling. I appreciated how characters were introduced, and their relevance to the murder was questionable.

KEPT ON ICE is a great addition to the Mika Chalmers Hockey Mystery. It is skillfully written and unexpected. I recommend this story to people who enjoy hockey and mysteries. I voluntarily reviewed an advance reader copy of this book.

Ice Breakers (Mika Chalmers Hockey Mystery #1) by Heather C. Myers Review

Ice Breakers by Heather C. Myers
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Heather C. Myers has a game-winner with Ice Breakers (Mika Chalmers Hockey Mystery #1). In this story, private investigator Mika Chalmers is hired by her ex-boyfriend and NHL player, Eric Foresburg, to help prove he did not commit a crime. This contemporary sports mystery takes place in Irvine, California.

Ice Breakers is an original and refreshing read. I like Mika’s character. She is smart and stands up for herself. I like that she doesn’t automatically assume Eric is innocent. She feels her job is to discover the truth. Not just, provide information to her client. Mica’s relationship with Detective Alexander Beech is fascinating. I like how the two bicker.

Ice Breakers is an entertaining read. It has interesting twists. I like the hockey mystery concept. I’m looking forward to the next book in the series Kept on Ice. I recommend this story to people who enjoy sports mysteries. I voluntarily reviewed an advance reader copy of this book.

Excerpt

The door is knocked.
In comes a chubbyish man, probably around twenty-eight, which incidentally is my age. He wears a gray long-sleeve shirt and black jeans. His face is flushed, brow sweating, and eyes bloodshot. The most striking thing is he walks uneasily with his hands covering his groin.
I stand up to greet him. “Casey McLong, I presume. Come on and take a seat.”
“You must be The Breaker.” He lifts one hand from his groin and accepts my greeting.
“I am Melanie Perkiss, but just call me Mel,” I say.
Still fearful his bladder could be full, I watch carefully how he will sit. Seriously, evil witches’ spells can cause just about anything.
Casey slumps onto the chair. He is distressed but not in real physical pain, and that gladdens me, but only slightly.
“So, tell me what happened?”
“I just woke up this morning.” His breath hitches. “And I went to pee, then to my utter horror…” He leans the elbow of one arm on my table and starts to massage his brow.
“No, it’s okay, you don’t have to say exactly. Did you pee, though?”
“Yes, I did, but through a tiny fibrous thing left.”
Dear Jesus, what a problem. “Uh, did you try a clinic?” I say, even though I know doctors can’t help victims of magic. If his organs have vanished for sure, no amount of X-raying or ultrasound scanning will bring them back.
“Didn’t see the need.” He swallows hard. “What could an MD possibly do? Patch me up with a donation?”
I smile wryly. I have once heard of donated genitals, but still wonder how an operation to patch them on could work out. Honestly, it’s a stretch.
“You want me to show you?” He motions at his pants.
That, in fact, was what I was coming to. “Yes, please,” I say.
Checking for myself would help prove that said organs were really missing rather than just invisible. “The restroom is off a corridor to the back. Is that where you prefer? We could go together.”
My office is not outfitted for seminude examinations. I have my inoperable window blinds almost fully open to confirm.
Casey searches around, as if to satisfy himself that there is no one else in the office. I figure ensuring his full privacy in the confines of a washroom is not among his top concerns.
“Let me just lock, then,” I say as I see him reach for his belt.
I dart to the door and click the bolt, then come back. “Okay, show me.”
He unclasps his belt, pulls down his fly, then lets his pants open into a wide V. He wears a pair of white Calvin Klein underpants with an orange waistband. There is nothing there underneath when they go down, too.
“Oh my God.’’ I clutch my chin. This can’t be possible. This man is completely ruined. How could he ever live like that? It’s ugly. UGLY, UGLY, UGLY.

Three
It's been a while, and Casey still stands before me with his pants down. I’m too stunned to tell him to zip up.
Seriously, I hate to see anguish on people’s faces—my clients’ even more. It causes the spirits within me to roil, plunging me into a sea of depression. I sometimes catch myself having to hold back tears, and right now, I have no idea what to do to bring an immediate smile to this guy’s face.
Anyway, it won’t help to grieve. Something must be worked out, and my mind jumps into gear.
“Right, dress up,” I say, but calmly, “and take your seat.”
“Thank you.”
As he does that, something I hadn’t noticed flashes into my eyes. It’s uncommon among men, but this guy is different: he sports a gold band on his finger!
A more feminine part of me wants to ask, but I know I mustn’t pry. Even so, I still blurt, “Oh, you got that.”
A sharp stab mars Casey's face. “Engaged,” he mutters. “Wedding, this Sunday.”
Now I get why this whole thing is killing him more. This problem shouldn’t have occurred when he was looking forward to such a blissful time. I try to imagine something like it happening to my boyfriend. That would be like the world coming to an end for us, and I don’t know if I could recover from such a crisis…

Vampire Detective Midnight by J. C. Andrijeski: Guest Post & Giveaway

HALLOWEEN BACK IN THE U.S.A....

I missed Halloween!

Let me just get that off my chest… I MISSED HALLOWEEN, lol.

I also missed Christmas, Easter, Thanksgiving… Talk Like A Pirate Day.

But Halloween has always been one of my favorite holidays.

I just moved back to the United States in July. This was after spending almost five years living in Thailand, with another few years in India prior to that.

Halloween is one holiday that just doesn’t translate, even if, like in Thailand, they like to celebrate it, at least in the big cities where a lot of foreigners live.

Since I lived in Bangkok, which is pretty much the epitome of that, they had Halloween-themed movie nights, Halloween decorations in the malls (there are a LOT of malls in Bangkok), Halloween-themed bar nights (a LOT of Halloween-themed bar nights… Bangkok likes its bars), costume parties thrown by foreigners living there and some of the consulates… Halloween music in the coffee shops.

It’s not the same.

Sorry, it’s not even close to the same.

The weather doesn’t help.

It’s pretty much 90 degrees Fahrenheit year-round in Bangkok, with roughly 80-90 percent humidity. That doesn’t flex all that much, although there are seasons in Bangkok. There’s the super-duper, crazy hot season that runs roughly from April to June, where it goes up to the high nineties, and even into the one-hundreds. There’s the wetter seasons, the “hot” and “cold” monsoons, where it rains a lot and the city floods. But it never really cools down. “Cold” Monsoon is just slightly cooler than the one at the end of the hot dry season.

Winter, which is around late November to February, is heavenly if you live there – but it’s still like high eighties to low nineties, which is, yeah, still hot.

So wearing a costume in that, for the average Westerner, isn’t much fun. A lot of living in Thailand is hopping from one air-conditioned enclave to another. I’m a big walker / outdoorsy person, and even I needed a lot of breaks from being outside.

Also, while Halloween is a novelty for Thais, and fun for them, it’s really not a part of their culture, so it’s not celebrated by most families. Thai kids don’t trick or treat… it’s not a thing there (although I did give out candy in my building). Horror movies are huge in Thailand, especially for teens, but that’s kind of a year-round thing, and even teenagers don’t care all that much about Halloween as a separate thing.

There’re no carved pumpkins on doorsteps, no scarecrows or other weird, macabre decorations on front porches or in yards, no dads making dorky attempts to scare kids, no haunted houses, no leaves changing colors, no big street parties like there were in San Francisco when I lived there. And yeah, because there’s no trick or treating, there’s also no roving bands of kids in crazy-cute costumes, jacked out of their minds on intense sugar and chocolate rushes.

Because of all that, this will be my first REAL Halloween since 2013.

I’m kind of overwhelmed by the possibilities, now that I’m living in Los Angeles. Part of me is tempted to go all-out and do a Disneyland Halloween, or one at one of the other nearby amusement parks, since all of them seem to have big, fun Halloween blowouts.

Whatever I end up doing though, whatever costume I pull out at the last minute, whichever friends of mine I drag out for a night of fun, I’m here for it! There’s nothing like a few years in a foreign country to make you miss the little things of home.

Hope everyone else has a fun, spooky, dorky, sugary, costume-y, autumn-y, pumpkin-y, and haunted-house-filled Halloween, as well! :)

Tagline: It’s hard being a cop in the future. It’s even harder when you’re a vampire.

Book Description:

Nick frowned, staring around at the alley floor.
It hit him again.
There was something wrong with this blood.
It smelled too good.

It smelled way, way too good…

Vampire with a past and homicide detective, Naoko “Nick” Tanaka just got transferred to the NYPD, where he works as a “Midnight,” or vampire in the employ of the human police. Like all state-reg’d vamps, he gets his food delivered to his door, lives in government housing, and basically can’t sneeze without the U.S. government knowing about it.

More than anything, he just wants to be left alone, to endure his immortality in peace, but he’s barely in New York two weeks when things start to go sideways.

It all starts with his new case––a case involving dead hybrids, graffiti that tells the future, a kid who shouldn’t exist at all, and a possible conspiracy involving the richest humans in New York.

That doesn’t even get into the school principal, a woman with secrets of her own, who has a deeply unsettling effect on him.

Nick finds he can’t get personally uninvolved with any of it. Instead, he gets sucked in even deeper, until he’s pretty sure he’ll end up forcibly reprogrammed by his human owners––assuming they don’t just rip his heart out of his chest and be done with it.

He needed to feed.
It was putting him in a foul mood.
That, and all this fucking blood…
Nick frowned, staring around at the alley floor.
It hit him again.
There was something wrong with this blood.
It smelled too fucking good.
It smelled way too fucking good.
That couldn’t all be Nick’s hunger.
“Anyway, that’s what I can tell you so far,” he said, making his voice deliberately casual. “Without knowing who the victims are, or what brought them to this alley, it’s pretty hard to speculate on motive, but…”
Nick hesitated then, realizing something.
Frowning, he stepped closer to the pools of blood.
Nose wrinkling, he crouched down so he could smell it from closer, even though the scent was overpowering, even from a lot further away. Taking a few full whiffs, he felt his fangs begin to extend in earnest.
That time, he couldn’t pull it back.
A flush of heat hit his gut and chest, burning in his throat. It was intense enough, he almost got hard, but he’d gotten pretty good at squelching that reaction, too.
He stood up at once.
Really, he lurched back.
It happened so fast, that smell and his reaction to it, Nick forgot to modulate his body’s natural reflexes to accommodate the people around him. He was up and moving in a heartbeat, darting back in pure instinct, without slowing his movements at all.
He moved fast enough to make the humans around him freeze.
Instantly, they turned into prey.
Ignoring them, and ignoring their deer-in-headlights reactions to how he’d just moved, Nick backed away from the pool of blood with a scowl.
He backed away from the human detectives and tech team, too.
“They’re hybrids,” he said, emotion reaching his voice.
He turned around, staring at the humans sharing the alley with him.
The stared back at him, faces blank, eyes holding flickers of fear.
Frustrated, wanting to smash through that frozen prey look, Nick let his voice turn into a harder growl.
“Jesus fucking Christ,” Nick said. “Did you hear me? They’re all fucking hybrids.”
When they still didn’t speak, he averted his gaze with a scowl. His eyes returned to the alley. Staring around at all of that blood, it sank in what it really represented.
Once it had, he couldn’t help but feel sick.

Meow (Catnip Assassins #1) by Skye MacKinnon Review

Meow (Catnip Assassins, #1)Meow by Skye MacKinnon
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Skye MacKinnon’s Meow (Catnip Assassins #1) is purrfect. In this story cat shifter/assassin, Kat starts her own business. A client asks her to take on a murder investigation (verses an assassination) with the option to kill the culprit. This contemporary urban fantasy is suitable for adult readers.

I really enjoyed this story. It was unique and entertaining. Skye MacKinnon does a nice job creating the foundation for this series by explaining politics and history in this novel. The characters are likable with a lot of dimensions. I love that Kat has the neighborhood cats working for her. Skye MacKinnon does a great job describing the cats’ attitude. Or is it catitude?

This is the first book that I have read by Skye MacKinnon. I enjoyed her writing style and humor. The book was skillfully written and entertaining throughout. The collard aspect of the story reminded me of Jennifer Ashley’s Shifters Unbound series. I recommend this book to people who enjoy shifter urban fantasies. I’m looking forward to following this series. I voluntarily reviewed an advance reader copy of this book.

Sapphire Flames (Hidden Legacy #4) by Ilona Andrews Review

Sapphire Flames (Hidden Legacy, #4)Sapphire Flames by Ilona Andrews
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Ilona Andrews heats things up with SAPPHIRE FLAMES (Hidden Legacy #4). In this story, Head of her House/Prime Catalina Baylor investigates the murder of a friend’s mother and sister. Concurrently, she is trying to figure out the motives of her teenage crush Italian Prime Alessandro Sagredo. This contemporary urban fantasy is suitable for adults.

Catalina and Alessandro first met when the Baylors were applying to become a house. Alessandro was Catalina’s judge. The two have sizzling chemistry. We discover more about Alessandro. He is not what you would expect. I love how much Catalina has grown since the series started. The once shy girl is becoming a worthy leader. I like that she is coming into her own. She is developing into a strong heroine with good values.

I enjoyed the plot. It was mysterious with numerous twists. The politics involved with the houses are interesting. SAPPHIRE FLAMES is a thought-provoking addition to the Hidden Legacy series. I’m looking forward to the next book in the series. I recommend this book to fans of crime mystery urban fantasy. I voluntarily reviewed an advance reader copy of this book.

The Librarian's Vampire Assistant, Book #3 by Mimi Jean Pamfiloff

Title: The Librarian's Vampire Assistant, Book Three
Series: The Librarian's Vampire Assistant
Author: Mimi Jean Pamfiloff
Genre: Humorous Paranormal Mystery
with Romantic Elements
Release Date: June 18, 2019

From New York Times Bestseller Mimi Jean Pamfiloff comes an uncomfortably hilarious Mystery with a heaping help of sexual frustration, THE LIBRARIAN’S VAMPIRE ASSISTANT, Book Three. (Yep! It’s a STAND-ALONE. But why not read them all because…fun!)

FALLING IN LOVE WITH A LIBRARIAN JUST CAN’T GET MORE AWKWARD…

Michael Vanderhorst is not your usual vampire. For starters, he works in a library, is in love with Miriam, his hot nerdy human boss who has no clue what he is, and he looks like a college student.
In reality, Michael is an ancient deadly vampire, an ex-assassin, and is currently the de facto king of his kind ever since their ruling party disappeared. To where? He doesn’t know, but if he wants his life back, he’ll have to find out. (Mystery!) Especially because a civil war is brewing, and being king makes his librarian a mark for his enemies. She is, after all, his biggest weakness.

With a global uprising about to explode, Michael must give her the protection of his army. Only one problem: She must become his queen first. But every attempt he makes to tell her the truth is met with extreme hostility. “Vampires aren’t real. That’s crazy talk, Michael!” Clearly, the topic frightens her.

With time running out and her life on the line, Michael is left with one option: Marry her. Without her knowing.

Can he pull it off? And what will happen when the fight comes to their door?
