Catching Lana (Alaska Blizzard Companion Novella) by Kat Mizera Review

Catching Lana: An Alaska Blizzard Companion NovellaCatching Lana: An Alaska Blizzard Companion Novella by Kat Mizera
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Kat Mizera heats things up with CATCHING LANA (Alaska Blizzard Companion Novella). Retired U.S. Marine, Mark Garrison, becomes a body guard. On his way to Alaska to be the security detail for Alaska Blizzards team owner, Gage Caldwell, he runs into his long-time crush, Lana Callahan, who is also on her way to Alaska. Lana is the publicist for Blizzard goalie Aaron Ferrar. Their flight is canceled and the two hook up. The next morning Mark wakes up to an empty room.

Inevitably, the two run into each other again in Alaska. The story had many interesting twists and was full of excitement. The story was skillfully written and entertaining. It was a great companion to the Alaska Blizzard series. I voluntarily reviewed an advance reader copy of this book.

Excerpt

“Some had pale skin with dark tattoos. Others had darker skin with luminescent body markings. White eyes beamed toward us, empty, emotionless. Most of them had slightly pointed ears. They were taller and bigger than most people I knew. Some glided, others walked, and all wore long black robes.”
That’s kind of cool. Ana tried to visualize those chained, and the tall silhouettes gliding inside the cave. It made her shiver.
“They inspected everyone in the room and separated us into groups. We were the lucky ones, they said, chosen to rule the Earth.” Jonas ran his hand over the lower half of his face. “They spoke our language with ease.” He leaned against the backrest of his chair again, as if he wasn’t used to sitting, or he was uncomfortable. “It seemed the ones with darker skin and luminescent tattoos were higher ranked. One of them signaled, and more came in.” He glanced at Ana. “On some floating carts, motionless human bodies were piled up, and we each got one dropped at our feet—”
“Where they dead?” Ana interrupted.
Jonas shook his head. “No. They showed us how to feed. That was the first time I drank human blood.”
He stopped again. Ghosts seemed to be haunting his eyes, as if trying to escape.
Ana gathered her legs, curling them under her frame. She had dismissed the earlier lesson from Mara in regard to the posture.
“Who were they?” Ana slightly leaned forward, devouring every word.
Jonas stared at her like her words woke him from a trance.
“They told us they were from Vamphora. Called themselves Vamphorians and named us vampires.”
“Wait. Are you saying they were aliens?” Ana couldn’t believe her own words.
“Yes.” Jonas nodded in agreement. “They were searching for a new home. Theirs was on the brink of extinction.”

Bloodline Destinies
Bloodline Book 2

In the year 2516 humans share Earth with elusive vampires and GeMs—a new species of blood-drinkers who appeared after the Flood.

Months before his five-hundredth birthday, Theodor De Croix, Prince of The Old Coven, crosses paths with Vivienne. Torn between proving himself worthy of his bloodline and centuries-old beliefs about true love, he saves her life but rejects the idea that she might be sent to him by fate itself.

Vivienne is a human scientist turned GeM in an accident. Body and mind forever altered, she struggles every day to adapt to her new life. Attracted to the man who saved her, but fearing his kind, she finds herself in more danger than ever.

Caught up in a whirlwind of dreams and evil plots, both must confront their own demons in order to save each other, testing the powers of fate and love.

Excerpt

For the first time that night, Theodor deliberately investigated her mind. All of a sudden, the human he thought weak, spineless, and afraid of everything, demanded an answer.
With his curiosity piqued, his right eyebrow arched. She still thought he was a GeM, like her, even if he denied it more than just once.
Theodor took a few steps in silence, and decided it was time for her first real test. Let’s see how she’s going to react.
Vivienne took a step back. Her eyes opened wide with a mix of fear and doubt.
“Vampire . . . A monster . . .” she whispered in visible disbelief. “Are you going to kill me?”
“Of course not. Why would I do that?”
Theodor followed all her thoughts. As much as he detested invading anyone’s mind, this time he needed to know.
“Is it not what vampires do? I never believed they even existed.”
“It isn’t what we do. We have, in fact, watched over humans for centuries.” Theodor took a step closer to her. “In the old times, yes, my kind used to feed on human blood, but not anymore.” His voice softened. “You’re safe. I won’t hurt you.”
She continued to retreat. Her fear hit him in waves.
“I’m sorry, but I don’t believe you.”
She panicked. Her pupils dilated, her pulse accelerated, and her heartbeat became erratic. The attempt to put some distance between them failed.
Theodor hissed, displaying his long, white fangs.
Vivienne whirled on her heels. Her hair danced around her shoulders, and a few strands covered part of her face.
Theodor cut off her way to the exit. His hands grabbed her shoulders. Damn, she needs to eat more.
“Viv, I will not hurt you. I would—”
“You’re a blood-sucking monster,” she yelled with tears running down her face, trying to free herself from his firm hold.
Her words shouldn’t have surprised or hurt him. Humans called vampires all sorts of names. He knew since the day he found out what he was how much humans feared and hated his kind. So, why did her words hurt? Why did they feel like a slap to his face?
“Funny, coming from a GeM.”
His confrontation didn’t stop her. She continued to squirm in his hands, trying to break free. He wasn’t going to let her go.
“Look at me.” Theodor’s demand froze her in place, and she stared at him.
He drove deeper into her mind. For the first time, she noticed his dark blue eyes, and for a fraction of a second, to his satisfaction, she thought they were beautiful.
“Please, let me go.”
He couldn’t allow her to return to where she escaped from, or on the streets. I didn’t save her life to send her back to her death.
Theodor needed more time and used his magnetism on her. She fell unconscious in his arms without another sound.
“You failed, Viv.” He was the sole witness to his own words.

Savage Love (High House Canis #1) by Riley Storm Review

Savage Love (High House Canis #1)Savage Love by Riley Storm
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Riley Storm’s SAVAGE LOVE is an amazing start to the High House Canis series. Wolf shifter Lucien Canis finds himself on human Alison Eaton doorstep after an ambush almost kills him. This contemporary PNR takes place in Plymouth Falls. It is suitable for adult readers.

I like Lucien. He has noble values. He is trying to help fix his fractured pack. His leader, Logan Canis, is captured, and Lucien sets out to try to release him. Lucien and Alison share a past. He wants to make her his mate but due to the upheaval in his house, he was separated from her six months prior, causing trust issues for Alison. Plus, add in the fact that Alison has no clue that Lucien is a shifter, they have a few obstacles to overcome.

I enjoyed the plot. There are a lot of interesting politics going on with the Canis pack. The wolf shifters’ names start with L. That was a little confusing in the beginning differentiating who was who. This was the first book that I have read by Riley Storm. I enjoyed her writing style and creativity. I recommend this book to people that enjoy PNR with a lot of action. I voluntarily reviewed an advance reader copy of this book.

Jennifer Estep's KILL THE QUEEN

The thrilling first novel in the Crown of Shards epic fantasy series combines magic, murder, and adventure when an unlikely member of the royal family suddenly becomes a contender in a clash for the crown . . .

In a realm where one’s magical power determines one’s worth, Lady Everleigh’s lack of obvious ability relegates her to the shadows of the royal court of Bellona, a kingdom steeped in gladiator tradition. Seventeenth in line for the throne, Evie is nothing more than a ceremonial fixture, overlooked and mostly forgotten.
But dark forces are at work inside the palace. When her cousin Vasilia, the crown princess, assassinates her mother the queen and takes the throne by force, Evie is also attacked, along with the rest of the royal family. Luckily for Evie, her secret immunity to magic helps her escape the massacre.
Forced into hiding to survive, she falls in with a gladiator troupe. Though they use their talents to entertain and amuse the masses, the gladiators are actually highly trained warriors skilled in the art of combat, especially Lucas Sullivan, a powerful magier with secrets of his own. Uncertain of her future—or if she even has one—Evie begins training with the troupe until she can decide her next move.
But as the bloodthirsty Vasilia exerts her power, pushing Bellona to the brink of war, Evie’s fate becomes clear: she must become a fearsome gladiator herself . . . and kill the queen.

Kill the Queen (Crown of Shards #1) by Jennifer Estep Review

Kill the Queen (Crown of Shards, #1)Kill the Queen by Jennifer Estep
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Jennifer Estep’s KILL THE QUEEN is an amazing debut to the Crown of Shards series. Lady Everleigh Saffira Winter Blair was the seventeenth in line for the throne. Her cousin, Vasilia, the crown princess, kills everyone in the royal family to ensure her spot on the throne. Evie manages to escape hiding among a troupe of gladiators, while determining her next move. This fantasy is suitable for adult audiences.

I loved this story. It was refreshing and exciting. Evie is a likable character. She was orphaned after the murder of her parents. She was at the bottom of the royal family food chain, not being treated very well. She has a good sense for right and wrong. She has a magical ability that she keeps hidden. She has all the makings for a humble heroine. She is courageous and ruthless. She is caring and selfless.

I adored her interaction with Lucas Sullivan. Their verbal banter was entertaining. They have amazing chemistry. Lucas has an interesting history.

The plot was skillfully executed and clever. There are interesting twists, lots of drama, and action. The characters are well-developed and believable. KILL THE QUEEN would make an excellent movie or television series. I look forward to the next book in the series. I voluntarily reviewed an advance reader copy of this book.

Olympian Challenger by Astrid Arditi

A hero’s tournament. A defiant contender. Does one girl have the courage to take on Mount Olympus? Hope’s world doesn’t have room for heroes. She barely has time for schoolwork, swim team, and taking care of her ailing mother. But when she’s invited to a mysterious tournament, the all-powerful hosts won’t take no for an answer. Transported to Mount Olympus, Hope comes face to face with her new trainers—the pantheon of Greek gods. While other contenders train hard to gain a fighting edge, Hope searches for a way out. Instead, she finds a gorgeous shadow god who may just convince her to stay… As each round unfolds, the ultimate prize draws closer—the granting of her heart’s deepest desire. If she survives the final challenge, her mother’s cure would be within reach… but only if Hope can ignore the tournament’s dark purpose. Olympian Challenger is the first book in a bold YA urban fantasy trilogy that fans of Rick Riordan and Cassandra Clare are sure to devour. If you like Greek mythology, forbidden romance, and feats of courage, then you’ll love Astrid Arditi’s heroic coming-of-age tale.

Astrid Arditi has studied at Hogwarts, ridden a dragon, swam with mermaids and flown to the moon. Recently, she traveled to Mount Olympus… She leads a double life: one of words and whimsy; the other one chasing her two young kids around the playground and kissing away booboos. She’s a spy, a princess, a unicorn, a wife, a mother and an author. Life is never dull in her messy home in Brooklyn, or in her dreams where she escapes as often as she can. She writes from experience, of course. You may not believe it, but everything in her books has actually happened to her…even if only in her imagination.

Remembrance (Heart Lines #1) by Heather Hildenbrand

Remembrance: New Adult Paranormal RomanceRemembrance: New Adult Paranormal Romance by Heather Hildenbrand
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Remembrance by Heather Hildenbrand is a unique and entertaining start to the Heart Lines series. Two years before the story began; Samantha Knight underwent a trauma that caused her to lose her memory. She is no longer the outgoing individual she used to be. Instead, she is paranoid and scared. Supernatural hunter, Alex Channing, is slowly dying after being bitten by a werewolf. His sole hope is for a cure that only Samantha could give him, if she could remember. This contemporary PNR takes place in California. It is suitable for New Adults.

Heather Hildenbrand did a wonderful job writing this book. The character development was skillfully crafted. I could sense Sam’s frustration at not remembering what happened to her. You felt her confusion. She discovers significant things about herself and what transpired to her throughout the story. Alex has a secret and is harboring a lot of guilt. He is a worthy hero who is brave, determined, and protective. I enjoyed both main characters; they are multi-dimensional and complex.

REMEMBRANCE was mysterious and full of twists. The plot was well-executed. REMEMBRANCE moves quickly and is thought-provoking. There are occurrences in the story that are eye-opening. The ending left me anxiously awaiting the next book from the series. I voluntarily reviewed an advance reader copy of this book.

Excerpt

Dr. Barton was bent over rummaging through a bottom drawer of the built-ins on the far wall. Even though Alex did his best not to stare, it was impossible not to notice that she had an incredibly spectacular ass. He’d always been a leg man, but one look at her derrière and he suddenly decided he’d been missing out.
Then she stood up, turned around, and flipped her long, wavy blond hair over her shoulder, and he realized that the rest of her was equally stunning. While her baggy white lab coat hid a lot, he could still tell that she had an athletic build and some really nice curves. It was her face that made his heart beat faster, though. She had the most captivating pair of blue eyes he’d ever seen and full red lips just begging to be kissed. From this moment forward, whenever he pictured an angel, he would think of the beautiful Dr. Barton.
Alex smiled, and when she smiled back, he heard her heart thudding a little quicker. But then she looked down at Tuffie, and her entire expression changed. Hurrying over, she dropped down to one knee beside Tuffie, gently examining her ears and face.
She gave Alex an angry glare. “Please tell me you arrested the people who put this beautiful girl in a dogfighting ring. Even better—tell me you shot them.”
If Alex had thought her heart was beating fast before, it was nothing compared to the way it was thumping now. Clearly, Dr. Barton was very passionate about protecting dogs. In his book, that made her even more beautiful than she already was.
“I wish I could, but unfortunately, we never found the people who did it,” Alex said. “We rescued Tuffie when her owner was killed. He died trying to protect her from a psychopath armed with a rifle.”
Dr. Barton’s gaze went back to Tuffie, her expression turning from anger to sadness as she ran her fingers down the fresh scars along the dog’s chest and side. “Looks like she got shot anyway.”
“Yeah. It’s a miracle she lived long enough for my teammate and me to get her here in time for Doc Jones to save her. Thank God for sirens. I think we ran every red light in town.”
The veterinarian straightened, gracing him with another dazzling grin, and Alex felt his knees go a little loose. Damn, what a smile.
“I knew there was something I liked about you the second you walked in.”
Alex felt his face flush. “It wasn’t a big deal. I’m a cop. Saving people—and dogs—comes with the job description.” He cringed the moment the words left his mouth. Had he really just said something that lame?
Thankfully, the beautiful Dr. Barton didn’t seem to notice the cheesy line. Or if she had, she was too polite to laugh at him.
“And is bringing Tuffie to her appointments also in your job description?” she asked, her eyes twinkling.
Was her heart beating even faster than before? Unless it was his own heart pounding in his ears. That was a definite possibility. Because it seemed like he had a real thing for Dr. Barton.
He smiled. “It is if the rest of the SWAT team and I adopted her and gave her a new home.”
Alex knew it was a shameless grab to get further into the doctor’s good graces, but he couldn’t seem to stop himself.
“Not only did you save her life, but you adopted her too? I think Tuffie hit the lottery with you, Officer…?”
“Trevino,” he said, filling in the blank and offering his hand. “But please, call me Alex.”
She took his hand and gave it a shake. “Nice to meet you, Alex. I’m Lacey Barton.”
Her hand was small in comparison to his, her skin soft and warm, and Alex found himself holding on a bit longer than was customary. Lacey didn’t seem to mind. In fact, she appeared just as reluctant to let go as he did.
She pushed her hair behind her ear and cleared her throat. “I guess we ought to get on with Tuffie’s checkup. So you can get back to saving the world and everything.”
“Yeah, of course.”
Reaching down, Alex gently picked up Tuffie and set her on the stainless steel exam table.
“Nice muscle tone,” Lacey murmured.
Alex felt the compliment go right to his head. “Thanks.”
“Actually, I was talking about Tuffie,” Lacey said as she tenderly ran her hands over the dog’s shoulders.
“Oh.”
She looked up at him from beneath her lashes. “But yours is pretty good too.”
Alex chuckled. Damn, this woman was good. He had her by a foot in height and more than a hundred pounds in weight, yet she was playing him like a fiddle, and he didn’t mind one bit. He couldn’t remember ever having such an immediate and intense reaction to any woman he’d ever met. Suddenly, he wanted to know everything there was to know about her—and then some.
Lacey was more than accommodating, telling him about how she’d recently gotten a job here after working several years at a place on the west side of Dallas closer to Arlington.
“I loved it there, but this place is closer to my apartment,” she told him as she continued to examine Tuffie. “I’ve cut my commute time by about an hour and a half each way, so it’s like getting a whole extra day off to do stuff I want to do instead of sitting in traffic.”
“And what do you like to do with all this extra time?” he asked.
Lacey leaned over to read something in Tuffie’s medical records. Alex tensed, worried she’d found something wrong, but after a moment, she merely nodded to herself, then went back to checking Tuffie. “I do a lot of volunteer work at one of the nearby animal shelters,” she said. “I’m also on call to help out both Animal Services and the DPD Animal Cruelty Squad when they run into injured dogs.”
Whoa. A woman who spent her days taking care of dogs for a living, then did it during her spare time for free? That was definitely a woman Alex could appreciate.
“It’s pretty amazing that you give so much of your time to animal causes,” he said. “Getting called out at all hours of the day and night must be tough on your boyfriend, though.”
Lacey urged Tuffie over on her back, pressing carefully along one of the long scars that ran all the way from the base of her rib cage to the middle of her cute pink tummy.
“I don’t have a boyfriend right now,” she said, the corners of her mouth turning up. “My life is a little too busy for that at the moment.”
Bingo! Alex had already noticed she wasn’t wearing a ring. Now he knew she wasn’t seeing anyone. Could this get any better?

In Wolf Unleashed, the fifth installment in Paige Tyler’s sexy and suspenseful SWAT series, Lacey, the heroine, sees a side of the hero, Alex, that she really did not expect. Namely, his wolf side!

We asked Paige Tyler about other fantastic stories that portray a character seeing another in a new light. What are her favorites?

Julie from Warm Bodies. I love this movie. “R” is a zombie who falls in love with a normal girl named Julie. Of course, Julie can’t see past the fact that “R” is dead. Yeah sure, there is the whole “you ate my previous boyfriend” issue to deal with, but after Julie is able to move beyond that, she discovers there’s more to “R” than meets the eye. After that, it’s all a matter of being in love and saving the world. What could be better?
