Moonlit Feathers
by Sarah Mäkelä

After faced with crippling loss, a heartbroken raven must find her wings again...

Treasure hunters are trained to find things, but all Morgana has known is loss. When someone she loves dies because she can’t protect them, she shies away from the world, too afraid to let anyone else get close. That won’t last long because ravens aren’t ones to pass up on shiny things.

Cody has never really felt accepted. He’s a coyote shifter of Native American heritage, but he gets his looks from his Scandinavian mother, unlike his siblings and the rest of his people. That makes him all the more dedicated when what seemed like a freak tornado becomes something much scarier.

When Cody realizes that his family’s powerful talisman has slips into the wrong hands, he desperately needs help. But he never imagined he’d be fall head over heels for the beautiful, if not, mysterious treasure hunter. Morgana will need to let go of being hurt again if they have any hope of saving not only each other, but also the small town that they both love from disaster.

Character Interview

Please welcome Morgana from Sarah Mäkelä’s Moonlit Feathers to Diane’s Book Blog.

What is your full name? Do you have a nickname?

My name is Morgana Breen.

What is your hair color? Eye color?

I have blue-black hair and light blue eyes.

How old are you?

I just turned 21 years old not too long ago.

What is your biggest fear?

My biggest fear is losing everyone I love and being forever alone. Cody is the only one stopping that from coming true, so I’m holding onto him for dear life.

What or who is the greatest love of your life?

Cody is the greatest love of my life without a doubt.

What is your greatest regret?

My greatest regret is not being able to save my former boyfriend Ezra. We went treasure hunting in South America, but when things turned bad, I couldn’t rescue both of us. He died.

Which talent would you most like to have?

I’d love to have superhuman strength. I’m probably a little stronger than the average human due to all the flying I do, but Cody’s strength vastly dwarfs mine.

What do you most value in your friends?

I value loyalty and discretion. Something the person I’d thought had been my friend recently lacked. There are some crazy, dangerous people out there. I’ll have to be more careful in the future.

3 Wicked-Hot Halloween Tidbits
by Titania Ladley

With the release of our Wicked Hot Reads box set full of Halloweeny paranormal romance stories by ten fabulous authors, including New York Times, USA Today, and Amazon best sellers, we’d all like to pose the three following must-know questions to our readers:

1) What's the most unique/scary/fave/cool Halloween costume you've ever seen or worn?

2) What's your favorite and least favorite Halloween candy?
3) What's your favorite paranormal creature to write or read about?

To get the pumpkin rolling, the ten of us will answer our own questions. Then it’s your turn! J

Jessie Donovan - author of Blaze of Secrets featuring the Feiru, elemental magic creatures.
1) My mother was a master seamstress and one year she made me the Belle costume (the big ballroom dress) from Beauty and the Beast (in blue instead of yellow) and it was gorgeous! Too bad my cats at the time destroyed it shortly after I wore it.

2) I don't like candy very much, but if I had to choose, then either Twix or Almond Joy for my favorite, and Good & Plenty as my least favorite.
3) Definitely dragon-shifters.

AC James - author of Fallen Ever After featuring mystical faeries and hot vampires.
1) When I was pregnant, I went to a Halloween costume party as Mother Earth. I stole a fall wreath from my mother-in-law, wore a brown hippie skirt with a tie-dye bikini top, and my girlfriend drew the earth on my belly in blue and green costume makeup.

2) Bubblegum.
3) I'd have to say that I've been a fan of vampire romance since I was a teenager. Both reading it and writing it.

Jan Springer - author of Bared to Him presenting “talented” tentacle shapeshifters. ;)
1) One time I saw this guy (or it could have been a girl) who was dressed up like a zombie that looked right out of the tv series the Walking Dead. It freaking scared me and grabbed my imagination to the point where that night I dreamed about waking up in a world full of zombies. *shiver*

2) Luv caramels! Don’t have a least fav... Love all Halloween candy. lol
3) Tentacle Shifters! Woot!

Shoshanna Evers - author of Beauty and the Beast (an erotic re-imagining) spotlighting an enchanting beast.
1) My favorite (and scariest!) Halloween costume was when my husband and I (before we were married) dressed up as a zombie-couple. I did our makeup, with rubber wounds and gashes and dead-looking skin, and we wore dirt-smudged old clothing, as if we'd climbed out of the graveyard that night. We looked pretty gruesome!

2) Favorite: I love candy corn, the kind with brown on it along with the orange and yellow! They taste different from the pure orange and yellow kind, not sure why! Least favorite: those fake candy eyeballs! They are too gross-looking to eat.
3) Writing the Beast from Beauty and the Beast (an erotic re-imagining) was absolutely awesome. I had to make him huge, terrifying, but also sexy, and kind. It was a fun challenge!

Titania Ladley - author of Mark of the Serapath featuring a bewitching witch and a sexy vampire.
1) A unique couple’s costume I saw at a huge Halloween street bash was one where the woman was dressed as a giant electrical socket and the man as an electrical cord with the prongs. They, um, “fit” together very well.
2) My favorite Halloween candy is candy corn. My least favorite is those icky taffy squares wrapped in white wax paper.
3) I love writing witch and wizard characters. All the magic is so fun!

Cathryn Fox - author of Knocking on Demon's Door including irresistible demons.
1) My husband and Kids and I all dressed as tie-dyed hippies and it went to a school Halloween dance. It was great fun.
2) Least fav candy is Tootsie roll. Fav candy is anything chocolate.
3) Favorite paranormal creature: werewolves.

Lisa Hughey - author of Archangel Rafe presenting gorgeous angels.
1) Costume...a few years ago I was a twister board. It was a really fun costume..
2) Fav candy is Reese's PB cups.
3) My favorite paranoramal creature is Archangels. J

Mina Carter - author of Dragon’s Honor featuring breathtaking dragons.
1) I'm in the UK so we don't really 'do' halloween :S I did see a great zombie costume a kid was wearing the other year. It was a zombie onesie complete with a shredded guts breastplate.

2) Chocolate is my favourite, I'm not too fond of boiled sweets.
3) Shifters, probably. Of any description. J

Milly Taiden - author of A Mate's Bite showcasing Milly’s awesome werewolves.
1) All of them. I'm a big Halloween fan.

2) Favorite all the chocolates. Least fave candy korn.
3) Wolves.

Sarah Mäkelä – author of The Wolf Who Played With Fire presenting a sexy wolf and a sweet witch.
1) I was Catwoman one year as a kid with the whip and everything. It was a blast.

2) I love Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups. I dislike anything with chunky peanuts.
3) Werewolves! <3

So what are your favorite and least favorite Halloween costumes and candies? What are your favorite and least favorite paranormal creatures to read about?

Thanks for joining us. Enjoy the Wicked Hot Reads box set!

Excerpt:

Hannah rested her forehead against the cool, metal desk. She anxiously awaited the moment when she could dive into bed and close her eyes. Cheating spouse cases currently flooded her office. Most of the ones she’d worked were fueled by insecurity and simple misunderstandings that could’ve been resolved through conversation or therapy. Just two more reports to file, then she’d be able to call it.
Memories of her soft blankets and the comfort of her pillow relaxed her bunched shoulders. Her eyelids drooped, and she exhaled, ready to give into her exhaustion.
Ringing jarred her from the edge of sleep. She jerked upright and rubbed her eyes. Clearing her throat, she reached for the office telephone. She used an old landline since they were more secure than the wireless communication devices on the market, which ranged from implants in the ear to high-tech cell phones.
“Franklin Investigations, how may I help you?” she asked, stifling a yawn.
“Is this Hannah Franklin? I need to speak with Hannah.” The male’s deep voice radiated urgency, with panic underlying his tone.
“This is she. Who’s calling?” Her spine stiffened, and tension tightly wound its way through her. She grabbed a stylus pen and poised it over her e-ink notepad. The electronic leaflet awoke within seconds filled with comments from her previous assignment. Tapping an icon in the top right corner, she brought up a clean page.
“Rich Granger. Listen, I can’t talk for long.” He paused. “Shit! Hold on.” Rummaging and his frantic breathing sounded over the phone. “Okay. This is the deal. I used to work for MAX Home Security. Everything was fine until a few months ago. A turnover happened with the corporate execs. You’ve heard the news, right?”
How could she not? Everyone was talking about the scandals involving the home security giant. Some of it was a bit too sci-fi weird, even for her. Yet, it also made her think of… Grrr… No, she wouldn’t do that to herself.
“Yes, I have. What’s this about?” She kept her voice professional and scribbled down notes about the new potential client.
“You know the senators who spoke against them are dead, yeah? Well, that’s not a coincidence. I have proof that MAX killed them. Meet me at the donut shop on the corner of Fifth and Main Street. You need to see this. Shit!” Sneakers smacked pavement and tires screeched over the phone line. “It’s too late,” Rich said. “They’re here. A freelance hacker I know can help you finish this. Malloc. Reach out to him. This needs to stop.”
The hackers she’d met weren’t the most trustworthy, but if he could help… And wait, she’d be finishing this? Alone? Reluctance rose within her. Her caseload was already full. Besides, after opening her own firm, she needed compensation for her time. Bills streamed in faster than paychecks. However, none of her current assignments held this level of excitement. This case could drive in more business.
“All right, I will.” She scribbled down the hacker’s name and notes about the donut shop.
Men yelling and the distant sound of thundering footsteps disrupted her thoughts.
“Mr. Granger? Rich? Hello?” She glanced at the caller ID to write down Rich’s number and turned to her computer, keying in the digits to a reverse lookup search engine. She needed to know who exactly this guy was.
A gunshot blast rang through her ear, and she jumped out of her chair, dropping the phone. Blowing out a calming breath, she grabbed the phone and listened again.
A pained whimper yanked at her heartstrings, and plastic clattered against a hard surface, presumably Rich’s cell phone hitting the sidewalk. Two more shots fired.
She slammed the handset onto the receiver, a wave of nausea and helplessness crashing into her. Bile rose in her throat, but she shoved it down. Now wasn’t the time. Slumping back into her chair, she stared at the name on her notepad. Malloc. Geez. Hackers could be impossible to track down. This wasn’t the first time she’d looked one up. The last hacker had taken several days to locate. Time wasn’t on her side now.

Excerpt:

Water slid over my body, and I lifted my face to the warm spray. Delicious soreness ached in my muscles as I reached for the shampoo. Crashing at Ethan’s house was dangerous, but the romantic rendezvous we’d shared had taken me to new heights of pleasure. However, not all good things last forever. My brother, Nolan, lived with Ethan, keeping an eye on the place while Ethan was deployed with the Army. Neither of us knew exactly when Nolan would arrive home from spending the weekend with his girlfriend, but he had work in a few hours. The chances of him swinging by were high. That meant I needed to leave as soon as possible. Part of me hoped I could slink away before Ethan woke up, but it was only a matter of time before he stirred. The fact he hadn’t yet indicated to me just how ‘active’ we’d been last night, since not only was Ethan a trained soldier, but now he was becoming more and more of a werewolf. That last part scared me. I leaned my forehead against the white tiled wall. Regret squeezed my heart like a vise. It would be so easy to blame Jessa, my friend and mentor, for pushing me into the werewolf debacle, and even easier to torment myself for having used wolf’s bane. If I’d gone with the common method of crafting the salve instead of making my own potent blend, then this would not have happened. Those thoughts led to madness. I balled my hands into fists. Neither Jessa nor I could’ve known what was going on. The supernatural world was one of magic and potions. Witches were real since I was one. Werewolves, on the other hand, were beasts of legend, not fact. That shocking revelation brought fear and pain crashing through my door and harmed those I cared about. Both Ethan’s and Jessa’s lives were changed forever, because I couldn’t protect either of them from the werewolf’s attacks. The ramifications of my failure were incomprehensible, especially for Ethan. Releasing a sigh, I focused on the bar of soap and reached within myself for my magic. Jessa made telekinesis appear so effortless. If I’d learned one thing recently, it was that I kept myself locked away, hoping others wouldn’t burn me at the stake. Being powerless wouldn’t help those I cared about, or me, when the time came to protect them. Fear and atrophy shriveled my magical muscles. While I still wasn’t convinced about using my power, especially not as openly as Jessa did, I refused to wait for the next disaster to hit before I acted. Something deep inside me knew we weren’t out of the woods yet. No matter how hard I concentrated, the soap remained rooted in place. Ugh. How could I measure up as a witch if I couldn’t even accomplish the basics? If my grandmother were here, life would be much easier. Instead, she rested in her grave. The bathroom door creaked open and my heart leapt into my throat. Panic pushed me to remain small and silent, even though the spraying warm water gave away my presence. If Nolan was home before work, I would be screwed. My brain scrambled for excuses about why I was here, much less why I was taking a shower. The mugging wouldn’t work anymore. Things had mostly gone back to normal. I spent more time at home whipping up potions for Jessa’s new age shop, Eternally Magick. With Jessa in the hospital, she couldn’t run the shop, and I needed to help. What family she had was several states away, and they couldn’t or wouldn’t take time from their lives to assist her. Besides, Ethan and I didn’t need to be as careful about Nolan coming around to my place. He rarely swung by these days, and when he did, he usually called first. “Mia? Everything okay in there?” Ethan nudged back the shower curtain, tension tight in his naked shoulders. Air whooshed from my lungs in a rush and my shoulders slumped forward in relief. “You scared me.” “Sorry, sweetheart. I felt a lot of energy buzzing in here. Just wanted to make sure you’re okay.” He let go of the curtain, and it fell back into place. The slightest twinge of sadness nibbled at me, but this was for the best. If he got in the shower with me, I might never leave.

She is a paranormal romance author, but she's written all over the romance spectrum with cyberpunk, sci-fi, fantasy, urban fantasy... even a sweet contemporary romance! A life-long paranormal fan, she still sleeps with a night light. In her spare time, she reads sexy books, watches scary movies and Ghost Adventures, and plays computer games with her husband. When she gets the chance, she loves traveling the world too.
