Intimate Danger by D.C. Stone

When FBI agent Trent Rossi arrives to investigate a chain of crimes—devastating murders and violent rapes—an inexperienced small town Detective, Charlie, who’s assigned to assist, finds her desire surging for the agent—only to realize he is the primary suspect. A sleeping threat has awakened in the small town of Nyack. Crimes in the cozy village, garner the attention of the FBI, who assign two agents to assist Charlie in tracking down the sick and deranged perpetrator. Agents Trent Rossi and Dillon Echols work closely with Charlie, but as the crimes progress, dark secrets begin to cloud the air, blurring the line between who is on the side of the law and who’s against it. Being Charlie’s first major case, she’s unprepared not only for the menacing killer on the loose, but also with the unexpected feelings Trent draws out of her. While Trent holds secrets, disappears at random, and seems to understand their perpetrator all-too-well, Charlie’s suspicions grow along with the pull she feels toward him. Her attraction could become fatal, yet she does not realize it until it is too late.

What Could Have by D.C. Stone

Annabelle and Lucas have just enlisted in the United States Air Force. The two live on opposite sides of the country, but are drawn together by a common goal, and a common connection.   Their friendship blooms, their trust grows, and the lust between them explodes. There are two problems with this situation, though. Neither of them communicate to the other on how they feel. And both of them fight against it.   Choices are taken out of their hands when, upon graduating from training, Annabelle and Lucas find that instead of being on opposite sides of the country, they will be on opposite sides of the world.   Ten years later, a common website has brought Annabelle and Lucas back in contact. The two of them have found each other after so many years; however, now, both are promised to others.   A brief kiss. A heartbreaking realization. And an accident. Choices made that are, once again, taken out of their hands.

Interview:

Please welcome author D.C. Stone to Diane's Book Blog:

How long did it take you to write Intimate Danger?

It actually took a bit for me to finish completely to where I thought, “This is it.” Intimate Danger evolved over the space of almost two years, the background on a few things, the process in which they went through to investigate the crime, and even the point of views in the story. When I first finished Intimate Danger, it was actually called The Face of Danger. My agent had wanted to put a bit more “oomph” into the title, so it changed to Face of Danger, and from there Intimate Danger. It was more of a thriller with romantic elements, than a romantic suspense when it was first finished, too, and thus the marketing for the book completely changed. Instead of it becoming this book I didn’t want to publish, in a genre I didn ‘t think was right for it, I changed a few things around, softened up the POV, and found the right fit for it. The haul might have been long, but I love where it, and the series, is at.

If you were stranded on a desert island which of your characters do you want by your side?

Oh this is different from the normal one I get asked of who I’d want on the island with me from a famous person point. Hmmmm, if I had to have a character with me, out of all of my characters, I have to say it’d probably be Lucas from What Could Have. That guy makes my heart go pitter patter in the best kind of way. <winks>

What inspired you to write your first book?

I used to read…a lot…and then I got into writing here and there with another group of people who liked to write. We didn’t consider ourselves authors, but instead the biggest fans of books and picked and chose characters we loved and wanted to continue to see going. It wasn’t fanfiction, but more just a group of friends that got together and had fun finding a way to encourage the story to go on. After about three years of doing that, I finally came to a realization that I wanted to get my own story, my own characters out on paper in my name. I passed this idea on, left the group, and focused on getting my story in order. Six months later, Feral Craving was finished and well on the way to being published.

What is your favorite book that you wrote?

To this moment, I have to say it was Intimate Danger. I had a blast recreating these crimes and this persona of this guy who just wanted to become this demi-God of terror. It is, after all, my day job to investigate crimes, so to be able to throw that in to a book, then grab a romantic element and build on that alongside? I was in heaven. Intimate Danger shows both sides of the world in crime, the mastermind of evil and the good guys that try to fight against it, so the reader feels everything that goes on every step of the way.

What's your favorite book-turned movie?

<laughs> Don’t hate me, but The Fight Club by Chuck Palahniuk. The in-depth level he gets his characters in, the whole complex “is this reality or a dream or something else” totally transferred over to film, and I still think to this day, is amazing just how well that director understood Chuck’s story and concept in order to do such a fabulous job. And really, could you go wrong with that opening line?

What is your typical day like?

I’m an investigator and spend each of my days very differently, whether it be writing reports on different crimes, interviewing suspects, chasing the evidence, or on conference calls for hours. There are even some days that many of that will take a back seat to whatever I have going on in this world. I’ve learned it all about time management and making sure each hat gets time on in order to make sure that everything has equal attention and there is nothing burning from being ignored.

Can you share a little of your current work with us?

I think I could…I’m working on the third book in the Empire Blue series, Intimate Honor. It’s about a Special Force Dog Handler who has a few tough choices to make…the first being, what is he to do when his dog takes not one, but three bullet for him while they are on an operation in Afghanistan. Here’s a little sample paragraph from Chapter 1.
Chris leaned down and called to DA, tilting forward to hook the straps of his body harness to the dog. He double-checked DA’s bite mask, making sure the supply of oxygen was still flowing, before checking his own mask. Despite what many thought, at this high in the air, both man and animal still had to take in a steady supply of oxygen or risk hypoxia. It’s why his team had been strapped to nothing but one hundred percent oxygen for forty-five minutes now. It’s also why none of them smoked, did drugs, and kept in shape, because despite being part of a Special Forces team, his team went above and beyond that call … a lot. And jumping out of perfectly good planes was just one of those beyonds.

What book are you reading now?

I actually just finished Ricochet by Joan Swan. I don’t want to give away any spoilers, but I will say this: If you don’t know this author, you’re missing out. She’s amazingly talented and each of her stories will leave your toes curling, your eyes widening, and your heart pumping. She’s who every writer should want to be.

  2. Great interview! I just read the excerpt of INTIMATE DANGER on Amazon and was immediately sucked in. The build for the antagonist is creepy and believable. I love the main character, Charlie's, voice and how strong she is. Her first lines are gold! The setting is detailed, realistic, and makes me feel like I want to stick around. :)
