Mia met him halfway, dodged his first hit, deflected his second. Her blood was singing, adrenaline
washing away all traces of her previous frustration a
nd anger. As promised, Logan wasn’t holding back.
He moved with a grace she hadn’t expected, a lethal beauty that was kind of turning her on.
His foot kicked out, connecting with her middle. He pulled back at the last second

hurt. But still, the force was enough to have her breath rushing out of her and sliding back a
step.
Mia shook her head and laughed. “Oh, you’re going to pay for that one.”
“Do your worst, chick.”
She ignored the sexist term he’d used, deciding it didn’t m
atter when he was looking at her as an equal
and not a piece of skirt. Avoiding his next attack, Mia twisted. Using her smaller frame to her advantage,
she got close enough to lay hands on him and brought Logan to the ground.
Her knee met his stomach, as
she pinned his shoulders. He struggled once, twice, before managing to
flip her. His triumphant expression should have infuriated Mia, but it only made the game sweeter.
“Your move,” he said breathlessly.
There was no way she’d get him off her without play
ing dirty. Logan was heavier and taller, and she
didn’t have the strength to move him. Relaxing just a fraction, Mia allowed her gaze to turn alluring, her
lips to lift just a little. Wriggling her hand free, she brought it up and beckoned him toward her m
outh.
Lust filled his gaze, but Logan wasn’t so easily fooled. “Not falling for it,” he mused.
Mia licked her lips and held his gaze.
The smile on his face faltered, his eyes focusing on her mouth, and Mia knew she’d won. His head
dipped, his mouth
brushing hers as she brought her knee up into his gut, pushing him off.
Logan growled, rolling away and jumping to his feet. “Not fair,” he said breathlessly.
Mia too was breathing heavily, and it had nothing to do with the exertion of fighting. The slight
brush of
his lips had been enough to flood her system with desire.
Maybe there’s more than one way to work off my frustration?
Stalking toward Logan, Mia took him in. She’d noticed him of course; you couldn’t meet him without
appreciating his pure male be
auty, but that didn’t mean she’d actually thought about sleeping with him.

“Victor…” He was talking nonsense about names and not remembering things, and all the intensity in his voice made me stop before I could say something stupid about how none of what he was saying made any sense…nonsense. And yet…my heart ached. It pulled at something inside me, like I was reaching for something lost myself. Like I had forgotten something important.
“I wanted to give you a gift worthy of such a gift as you’ve given me.” He turned back toward me and his eyes seemed to flicker like a sunset of colors reflected off them for merely a millisecond. I could see the universe swirl. I touched my neck and the pulse shook me from my daze.
“No,” I mouthed. I’d gone and done it…couldn’t help myself, but to stick my foot straight up and in. It felt so strong that I knew what he was going to say already and I couldn’t bear for us to change. Not yet. And I knew he was going to tell me something life shattering.
He looked mischievous and full of a confidence that I didn’t feel myself. If I were standing I wouldn’t be for long, as it was my legs were tingling in the process of being numb dead weight. Victor slid closer, lemon icing still lingering on his breath from taste testing his baking. My own mouth watered. I had to gulp to keep my lips from parting in anticipation of tasting him, hungry. He leaned back and handed me the lemon cupcake.
I absently accepted the offering. It sat heavy in my hands.
“Enjoy your cupcake.” The words rolled off like from a silver-tongued monster with gorgeous lips.
My eyes widened, and I couldn’t help but wonder what his game was? Enjoy MY CUPCAKE?! My lips ached, and the pit of my stomach sank into my toes, flaming acid burning through my whole body, ready to scream.
I shouldn’t have said no, maybe I shouldn’t have said no? No…I needed to say no—this was better this way. I didn’t need to know what he was going to tell me, did I?

As she slid past her throne,
Ryleigh’s sword caught on the arm, and she took a step back and untangled it.
She’d never get used to wearing the stupid thing everywhere she went. If not
for Jackson’s insistence, it’d probably be stuffed under her bed beside the
baseball bat she kept hidden there.
She pulled open a drawer on the side
table behind her throne and rifled through the papers she’d stuffed in there in
search of her leather appointment book. If she couldn’t find answers, may as
well get some work done. It was either that or dwell on Jackson’s mission and
the terror it brought. She pressed a hand against her heaving stomach. No. She
couldn’t think about that. She had more immediate problems she might actually
be able to do something about.
Several meetings had to be
scheduled, and without writing them down, she’d never keep track of where she
was supposed to be. Especially with her mind so jumbled with images of Jackson
going up against Chayce.
She snatched the book, shoved the
drawers shut, and turned to leave.
Ryleigh’s vision blurred. The air
shimmered in the center of the throne room, and her ears popped.
She ripped her sword from its sheath
even as the portal opened.
A seven-foot-tall beast built of
solid muscle tore through the portal. A triple headed flail swung from one
massive hand.
