Excerpt

I’m coasting through town and hit the red light right beside the damn grocery store. Off in the distance, I spot a girl getting out of a powder-blue car. “Son of a …” Beeep! Yeah, some asshole behind me is honking because the light’s green. I flip him off and turn into the one place I should probably avoid for life.
Zooming into a spot next to her car, I park and get out. She hasn’t noticed me. She’s hunched over, digging out something from inside her trunk.
“Why are you still here?” I ask.
She flinches. I watch as her back stiffens, and then she turns those baby blues that I swear possess the sea onto me. “I … had to. Why are you here?” Her tone is defensive.
“We’re not talking about me right now. We’re talking about you. Did you not get your trust fund or something?”
She lowers her lashes. “That’s my business.” She shuts her trunk, slings a backpack over her shoulder, then turns away from me. I grip her arm to stop her from leaving. With a fiery glare, she snaps, “I’ve got to go to work.”
I don’t loosen my grip but, instead, snort. “Been working here long then?”
“I don’t have time for pop quizzes. I have to clock in.” She jerks herself from my grip and begins to walk. “Good-bye, Graham.”
“I’m not finished.”
She pins me with a piercing stare. “Well, I am.” Then she stomps off into the store.
I run my fingers through my hair. That damn girl. I want to kiss her and bend her over her car. I want to nail her to the wall and make her scream my name. And why the hell do I also want her to be in that ugly-ass cashier uniform? I’ve got no idea, except that she makes it look hot as hell.
I check the time on my phone. Shit. I need to be at my appointment in twenty minutes. Guess I’ll have to talk to her later.

Interview

Please welcome Graham author Natalie Decker to Diane’s Book Blog.

What is your favorite part of the story, Graham?

His struggle. He was use to being wanted by all then he met Sarah, and she cheated on him. He has a hard time getting over that so he fakes happiness, by being cocky, arrogant, and sleeping with ever blond beauty to help forget about the one girl who ruined his confidence.

How long did it take you to write Graham?

5 months

If you were stranded on a desert island which of your characters do you want by your side?

If I were choosing from any of my stories I would have to say Caleb Morgan, he’s smart, charming, and funny. If were talking about Graham I would probably say between Bryce Matthews and Kyle Issac

What inspired you to write your first book?

My TA in college gave us a short story assignment. And I really enjoyed it but I wanted to do more. So I personally challenged myself to write a full novel.

What is your favorite book that you wrote?

A story I’m working on now seems to be my favorite so far. I’m still working on the title. But it should be out in summer of 2017.

What books have most influenced your life?

I love all of Harry Potter series, Jane Austen Books, Mortal Instruments, and Perfect Chemistry series. But honestly every book I read I learn something from or really love something about them. There is rarely a book I never finish.

What's your favorite book-turned movie?

Harry Potter series, Divergent series, Hunger Games series, Mortal Instruments City of Bones, I love this movie/ series of books and I was sad that they didn’t film the others. But we get the TV series on FreeForm and I’m loving those so thank you universe for giving me my favorite series in some sort of form.

How do you overcome writer’s block?

Outlines are extremely helpful. Also listening to music, and if a scene is causing me a problem. Like I can’t write past it then it needs to be deleted because it’s hindering my story from going where I need it to go.

Can you share a little of your current work with us?

I’m currently finishing up Kyle and working on a new story called Text Me, Maybe.

What book are you reading now?

The Hundred Lies of Lizzie Lovett by Chelsea Sedoti It’s an ARC the book is set to come out in Jan 2017.

What do you prefer paperback, hardcover, or ebooks?

Honestly it depends on the author and content of the book. If it’s something that’s new and the paperback isn’t available I will buy the hardcover, especially if it’s something my daughter or son might want to read too. I usually buy the paperback if they’re the same price or close to the same price as the ebook version. I buy ebook if it’s something dirty or erotica that I don’t want my daughter or son to read. Or if it’s a new author who is self published then yes I get ebooks.

Do you have anything specific that you want to say to your readers?

Thank you so much for being a part of this journey with me. You are amazing and wonderful!

Skylar

He leans toward me and kisses my lips. “You’re amazing. You know that?”
“Oh, I’ve been told.”
Caleb frowns and returns his attention to his General Tso’s chicken. He picks at his food in silence, so I take the hint and remain silent too. Whenever Caleb is worried about something or is grouchy, I find it’s best to just not say anything. He comes around, he just needs his space. I’m the same way, but sometimes, like now, I really wish he’d open up. But I know Caleb, and he isn’t going to open up anytime soon. This means I’m going to be sleeping by myself tonight.
Once I finish eating, I toss my paper plate into the trash and pick up my binders. Caleb clears his throat. “Where are you going?”
“Home,” I answer, and kiss his cheek before making my way to the door.
His arms lock around my waist. “Hey, come here.”
I’m just starting to let him pull me back onto his bed when his door opens. Kyle storms into the room, dropping his backpack in the middle of floor. He takes a seat at his desk and chucks off his shoes. There’s a sweat stain circling the armpits of his shirt. His shaggy golden hair flops into his eyes. He pushes it back with his hand and says, “Hey, Sky. Didn’t know you were visiting.”
“Kind of a surprise. I’m leaving, though. There’s extra Chinese if you want it.” I start to twist away from Caleb. Caleb frowns again. I kiss him. “I’ll see you tomorrow.”
“Thanks,” Kyle says, drawing my attention away from Caleb’s pout.
“No problem.” My gaze returns to Caleb. He still looks upset.
I’m about to ask him what’s wrong, but he asks, “You aren’t going to stay?”
“I would if you wanted me to. But you don’t seem like you want that.”
“I always want you to stay, babe. I’m just … thinking a lot. That’s all.”
I nod. Kyle moans through a mouthful of food. A giggle bubbles out of me, and Caleb shakes his head. “Dude. I’m trying to have a conversation with my girl, not listen to your foodgasms.”
“This shit is so good,” Kyle responds.
Caleb rolls his eyes and groans as he walks me over to the door. “I’ll walk you back to your place.”
“Caleb, I want to stay and spend time with you. I have a long day tomorrow and so do you. I won’t see you until Friday afternoon, for our appointment.”
He looks at me with a confused expression. “What appointment?”
“You know, the apartment? You told me this morning you’d look at it with me.”
“Oh … ”
Now I’m the one who’s confused. Earlier he said he’d look at it. Now he’s acting like this is the worse idea ever. I push myself out of his room and into the hall. Caleb is right beside me. We walk in silence down three flights of steps. I spin on the landing and face him. “What is wrong? Is it the whole idea of us living on our own in an apartment that has you freaking out? Or is it your workload? I’d like to know.”
“Sky … ” He reaches for my arms, but I take a step back.
“I want to know.”

“Nothing is wrong. I’ll be there. Okay?”
