Excerpt

“I need to take your temperature, McCall.”
Pulling a plastic thermometer from a package, she slipped it under his tongue without meeting his eyes. As a matter of fact, she hadn’t looked at him at all since she walked into the room.
She took his hand in hers and wrapped a blood pressure monitor around his wrist. Her flesh felt like soft butter against his skin, her nearness throwing his healthy libido into acceleration mode. Watching the machine monitor his pulse and blood pressure, she kept her face averted, while he sat with the damned thermometer under his tongue.
Why was she giving him the cold shoulder? He’d rescued her from Cyrus’s clones and had carried her – carried her – across crushed glass so she wouldn’t cut her feet.
He wouldn’t think about how her fingers in his hair sent goose bumps across his nape.
Taking the thermometer from his mouth, she looked at it before showing it to him, her gaze back on the monitor.
“Ninety-eight point four,” she said.
Squinting, he studied her stoic profile. She had the smallest nose he’d ever seen on a woman.
“Yeah, so?”
The monitor powered down before she turned the display toward him. His vitals were perfect.
“I know you don’t trust me, McCall. I don’t want you accusing me of falsifying your test results.”
Walking back to the computer, she entered the information, her fingers flying over the keys. That rounded backside of hers was damned near mouthwatering. How could a doctor who sat in a lab all day have an ass that pert?
“I have every right to be suspicious,” he said. “Wouldn’t you feel that way, under the circumstances?”
“What I would feel is irrelevant, Agent McCall.” Opening a cabinet above her head, she pulled down some medical supplies.
He hated logical women. They made too much sense. The erratic, fly-off-the-handle type he could handle. He could dismantle their arguments with little effort. With smart women, he had to work at it.
Walking over to the bed, she tore open a package and set a vial beside his hip. “Lay back.”
He refused to move until she looked at him. “No.”
Her gaze met his, disbelief lining her silver eyes. She stood less than a foot away, her mouth parted in surprise. Her top lip curved like the back end of a bow, her bottom lip plump and juicy.
“Do you want these tests, McCall? Or, would you rather have someone else do them?”
The smell of peppermint on her breath drew him closer. “Why have you been avoiding eye contact? Do you have something to hide?”
Her brows furrowed, her gaze dropping to his bare chest before looking back at the package in her hand.
“See what I mean?” he said.
Glancing up, she said, “What do you want from me?” She leaned in even closer, their noses nearly touching. “Is that better?”
His body stirred in his shorts, his lungs stuffed with down feathers. Behind those glasses blazed eyes like quicksilver, luminous and filled with ire.
Gripping the edge of the bed, he itched to grab her around that narrow waist and pull her between his legs. Something told him Dr. Teague Hamilton wouldn’t disappoint in the bedroom.
Damn, he should not feel aroused around this woman. Yet, for some stupid reason, her evasion freaking turned him on.
“You need to work on your bedside manner, Doctor.” He flashed her a cocky grin.
A slow smile blossomed on her face, a pink blush coloring her cheeks. “Would you just shut it and lay back?”
“I rest my case.” He lay back on the bed and propped his arms behind his head. His Johnson sat at semi-erect attention, hoping she’d pay it a little notice.
Of course, she looked anywhere but there.
“I need an arm – unless you want me to take it straight from your jugular.” She cocked a dark, arched eyebrow.
“All of my blood flow is in my shorts at the moment. Any chance you want to help me divert it?”
The ire in her eyes turned to silver fire, her voice going husky. “Sounds… tempting, but I wouldn’t want you to lower your standards for a criminal.”
“I’m into bad girls… just FYI.”
“And, I’m into bad boys. Too bad you’re one of the good guys.”

Interview

Please welcome "Agent N6: Dylan" author Joni Hahn to Diane’s Book Blog.

Thanks for hanging out with me today!! I’m happy to be here!!

What is your favorite part of the D.I.R.E. Agency Series?

I’m a big alpha male girl and my heroes are definitely alphas.  I’m a huge superhero movie fan so writing about them is a lot of fun.  I love creating women that bring them to their knees.  I think there’s nothing sexier than an alpha male falling in love.

How long did it take you to write "Agent N6: Dylan"?

It took me about five months to write the book.  I did a ton of research. I also had to tie it into the timeline and storyline of the previous books, and my plans for the series finale.

What sort of research did you do while planning the series?

Because I strive to write science that seems like it could actually happen one day, I have to base my fiction on facts.  And with technology advancing like it is, I have to ensure that what I write is still fiction. On this latest book, I was lucky enough to have an Arizona State University professor talk to me and confirm some of my fictional science.

What's your favorite book-turned movie?

I’m a big fan of the Twilight Saga.  I loved those books.  I can’t wait for the mini-movies to come out!

What book are you reading now?

I’m reading The Texan’s Wager by Jodi Thomas.  It was selected for the monthly romance readers book club at my local library.   Jodi is an amazing talent!

What do you prefer paperback, hardcover, or ebooks?

Actually, I prefer paperbacks, but I usually buy ebooks for convenience’s sake.  I have way too many on my IPad.

Who is your favorite author and what is it that really strikes you about their work?

I love Karen Marie Moning.  Her characterization is stellar, probably the best I’ve read.  I want to be her when I grow up.

What inspired you to write your first book?

After my brother had a magazine article published and my sister published a poem, it hit me like a ping on the forehead.  Why hadn’t I tried to write something for publication?  Back in middle school, I won a school-wide essay, and in high school, I went to UIL regionals a couple of years for creative writing. It had never occurred to me to write for publication until my siblings did so.  I guess I’m a slow learner.   After trying to get published on and off for several years, I heard Lilliana Hart speak at a local writer’s group.  Her inspirational journey spurred me to indie publish.  That was back in 2013.  Here I am, six books later.

If you were stranded on a desert island which of your characters do you want by your side?

I want Tristan Jacobs.  He was my first and will always be special to me.  He’s capable and the best at what he does.  He’s not just another pretty face. I have a soft spot for wounded heroes.

Do you have anything specific that you want to say to your readers?

YOU GUYS ROCK!  Thank you so much for all of the support and love you’ve shown me over the last year and a half.  It thrills me to know you love my stories as much as I do.  You’re the best!  xoxo

“Les, why is your father calling me?” Shutting her eyes against the dread that settled in her chest, she groaned to herself. She couldn’t open that door. If she did, she’d make a complete fool of herself. Walking over to the dresser, she checked her phone. Three missed calls and a text. Her father must’ve checked his DNA tracker and realized she was in Hawaii. “Les…” Looking at the door, she spoke in a raised voice. “Um, I’m not sure. Why don’t you call him back?” Jaydan chuckled in the hallway. “You didn’t tell him you were coming to Hawaii, did you?” Swallowing hard, she gave her chin a determined tilt. “I don’t report my whereabouts to my father. I’m not a child.” His sardonic chuckle angered her. Storming over to the door, she told herself she had to remember this. During those smokin’ hot visions, she had to conjure up this memory and the dozens like it she’d experienced in the past. “Hell princess, you –“ She whipped open the door to arms’ length. Jaydan stood naked in her doorway, save for a pair of gray, athletic shorts that hung low on his hips. Water droplets hung from his dark, wavy hair and dotted his broad shoulders. His arms and shoulders looked huge, the angles and braids of muscle sharp rather than round, the sinew dense and inflexible rather than pliant flesh. His sculpted torso was covered in hard, ridged muscles with a light dusting of dark hair. He smelled of rosewood and jasmine, his copper and gold armbands branding him a masculine god. Now, she understood his cougar-like grace, his confident saunter. No man on earth could call himself cut as long as Jaydan Rose walked around. He epitomized the term. His eyes swirled with dark desire, their focus on her chest. Glancing down, she saw her robe gaped open, exposing the cleavage between her breasts. She should cover herself. Close the door and walk away. Yet, she stood there, allowing him his fill while she took her fill of him. The sensation started deep inside, her mind recalling the vision, her body readying itself for him. There was more than one way to prove she wasn’t a child. With a hesitant reach, she feathered her fingers down the ridges of his abdomen. The muscles contracted beneath her touch, rippling behind her caress in a symphony of sensuality.
His half smile made her toes curl, his voice a husky croon.  “My turn.”

Character Interview

Please welcome Jaydan from Joni Hahn's Agent S5: Jaydan to Diane's Book Blog.

What is your full name? Do you have a nickname?

Jaydan Jonathan Rose.  My D.I.R.E teammates call me Rose.

What is your hair color? Eye color?

My hair color?  Really?  Hell, I don’t know.  I guess black.  My eyes are the same color.

What is in your refrigerator right now?

I don’t own a refrigerator.  I live at the D.I.R.E. San Diego offices.  That frig always has some kind of carbohydrates inside:  potatoes, leftover pizza, apples, strawberry jam, pancake syrup.

Who are the people you’re closest to?

Hope.  She understands me better than I understand myself.  Her brother, Saint, is my best friend.  That doesn’t mean I don’t love my mom and my brothers.  I do.  I just haven’t… been around them much.  I want to change that.

What is your biggest fear?

That Hope, Mitchell and my family will tell me I’m right – I’m really not good enough.  Not for her, for D.I.R.E., for their forgiveness.

That Booker was right all along – trouble really is my specialty.

What is your most treasured possession?

Hope.  And yes, I do consider her a possession.  She is mine and I dare anyone to say otherwise.  She’s everything to me.

As for material possessions, all I have left of my father is his championship rodeo belt buckle.  He was my champion, my idol -the best man I’ve ever known.  Losing him changed my life.

Which living person do you most despise?

If you would’ve asked me that before I met Cyrus Matheson, I would’ve said my stepfather, Booker.  I use to carry a lot of hatred for him inside of me.

Now, Matheson’s it.  The sick and twisted freak hurt Hope.  That makes him number one on my list.

What is your greatest regret?

Going all rebel without a cause when my dad died.  I was a teenager and did everything my father didn’t want me to do.  It ended up costing me my family and the life I thought I wanted.

Which words or phrases do you most overuse?

Hell, I don’t know.  I guess, hell, I don’t know

Nana Malone

USA Today Best Seller and iTunes Breakout Books author, Nana Malone's love of all things romance and adventure started with a tattered romantic suspense she borrowed from her cousin. It was a sultry summer afternoon in Ghana, and Nana was a precocious thirteen. She's been in love with kick butt heroines ever since. With her overactive imagination, and channeling her inner Buffy, it was only a matter a time before she started creating her own characters. While she waits for her chance at a job as a ninja assassin, in the meantime Nana works out her drama, passion and sass with fictional characters every bit as sassy and kick butt as she thinks she is. Nana also writes sizzling erotic novellas as Q. Malone.

V.J. Chambers

V. J. Chambers writes about being inexplicably attracted to the dangerously alluring. Her works span mundane settings and fantastic ones. She writes about serial killers, cult leaders, werewolves, witches, for-hire assassins, zombies, space pirates, and regular everyday people. Her book Slow Burn is one of ten books in the USA Today Bestselling anthology Red Hot Obsessions. She lives in Shepherdstown, WV, with her boyfriend Aaron and their cat Isis.

June Gray

June Gray is a daydreamer who, at the age of ten, penned a short story inspired by a Judy Blume novel and has been unable to stop writing since. She loves to tell stories that titillate and enrage, that break the reader’s heart and put it back together again. Her fairy-tale life has been lived on four different continents—most recently, in a two-hundred-forty-year-old castle in rural Germany owned by a Graf. She was born in the Philippines, raised in Australia, and now calls the United States home, and she can currently be found enjoying the shores of Miami with her husband, two daughters, and a miniature schnauzer.
