Star-Crossed Dragons by Chris Cannon Review

Star-Crossed DragonsStar-Crossed Dragons by Chris Cannon
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Chris Cannon soars with STAR-CROSSED DRAGONS. I love Chris Cannon’s Going Down in Flames series. I was thrilled when I found out she wrote this prequel about Bryn’s parents. This paranormal fantasy is suitable for young adults.

I enjoyed reading about Bryn’s parents blue dragon Sara Sinclair and red dragon Ian McKenna. The story begins around the time Sara is contracted to marry Ferrin Westgate. Sara meets Ian soon after she is intended to Ferrin. I really enjoyed this story. Sara and Ian were brave to go against the directorate for love.

STAR-CROSSED DRAGONS was skillfully written. I appreciated how things that happened in the Going Down in Flames series were referenced. This story made me want to reread the series. I recommend this book to people who enjoy stories about dragon-shifters. I voluntarily reviewed an advance reader copy of this book.

Burning Bright (Going Down in Flames #5) by Chris Cannon

Title: Burning Bright
Author: Chris Cannon
Genre: YA Urban Fantasy
Publisher: Entangled Teen
Publication Date: June 4th, 2018
Hosted by: Lady Amber’s PR

Blurb:

Bryn is back for her senior year at the Institute for Excellence, also known as shape-shifting dragon school. She isn’t sure which is scarier, the life-force sucking dragons stalking campus or the fact that she’s officially betrothed to Jaxon, a guy who will never love her. Not that she could ever love him, either… That’s just ridiculous.

Senior year should be fun. Her parents are alive, she’s finally fitting in, and she’s learning how to be a Medic. But what’s with Jaxon giving her strange looks? He runs hot and cold, and he doesn’t even have the excuse of being a hybrid fire-and-ice-breathing dragon like her. One minute they’re having a great time and the next, she wants to blast a fireball at his head. The marriage contract of doom looms over them--unless this match not made in heaven kindles a flame…

Burning Bright (Going Down in Flames #5) by Chris Cannon Review

Burning Bright (Going Down in Flames, #5)Burning Bright by Chris Cannon
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Chris Cannon soars with BURNING BRIGHT, the fifth book in the Going Down in Flame series. It is Bryn’s senior year at the Institute for Excellence. Someone is sucking the life force out of the dragons to gain their powers. In addition, she needs to spend more time with Jaxon now that they are betrothed. This shape-shifting dragon fantasy is suitable for young adult audiences.

I loved this story. Bryn has come a long way since book one, GOING DOWN IN FLAMES. BURNING BRIGHT takes place three months after the Rebel dragons attacked the campus and all the fallout that followed. Her parents along with the hybrid dragons have been moved to a town called Sanctuary.

Bryn has begun to take medic classes. She is studying Quintessence. The Silver dragons attaching the student body is the perfect storyline to go along with this since the silvers use Quintessence in a negative self-serving manner.

Bryn and Jaxon get to know each other better. I like that they open-up to one another. It’s a bit of a struggle at times. Jaxon is still devastated over Rhianna’s death. Bryn misses her knight, Valmont. Bryn’s grandmother and Jaxon’s mother, Lillith, give Bryn a lot of advice throughout the story on how to handle being married to a Blue and what is to be expected. Bryn and Lillith turn out to have a few things in common. I like that Jaxon is more open-minded then the stereotypical male blue dragon. For example, he admits his faults. I appreciated Bryn’s Christmas present to Jaxon. I adored that the two become a team.

Chris Cannon does an amazing job with both her character development and plot. The series is creative and full of action. I love all the changes that Bryn helped to make their dragon society a better and more equal place. I don’t want Bryn’s story to end. I would love to see a spin-off series of her college years. Going Down in Flames is an amazing series. The Going Down in Flames series would make an excellent movie or television series. I voluntarily reviewed an advance reader copy of this book.

Fanning the Flames (Going Down in Flames #4) by Chris Cannon: Giveawy

Going Down in Flames
(Going Down in Flames #1)
by Chris Cannon
Published by Entangled Teen
Published on June 30th, 2014
Genre: YA Paranormal/Fantasy

If her love life is going down in flames, she might as well spark a revolution. Finding out on your sixteenth birthday you’re a shape-shifting dragon is tough to swallow. Being hauled off to an elite boarding school is enough to choke on. Since Bryn is the only crossbreed at the Institute for Excellence, all eyes are on her, but it’s a particular black dragon, Zavien, who catches her attention. Zavien is tired of the Council’s rules. Segregated clans, being told who to love, and close-minded leaders make freedom of choice almost impossible. The new girl with the striped hair is a breath of fresh air, and with Bryn’s help, they may be able to change the rules. At the Institute, old grudges, new crushes, and death threats are all part of a normal day for Bryn. She’ll need to learn to control her dragon powers if she wants to make it through her first year at school. But even focusing on staying alive is difficult when you’re falling for someone you can’t have.

(Going Down in Flames #2)

Published on January 19th, 2015
Genre: YA Paranormal/Fantasy

Don’t just fight the system…burn it. Since discovering she is a shape-shifting, fire-breathing dragon on her sixteenth birthday (surprise!), Bryn McKenna’s world has been thrown into chaos. Being a “crossbreed”—part Red dragon and part Blue—means Bryn will never fit in. Not with dragon society. Not with the archaic and controlling Directorate. And definitely not when she has striped hair and a not-so-popular affection for rule-breaking… But sneaking around with her secret boyfriend, Zavien, gets a whole lot harder when he’s betrothed to someone else. Someone who isn’t a mixed breed and totally forbidden. And for an added complication, it turns out Bryn’s former archnemesis Jaxon Westgate isn’t quite the evil asshat she thought. Now she’s caught between her desire to fit in and a need to set things on fire. Literally. Because if Bryn can’t adapt to the status quo…well, then maybe it’s time for her to change it.

Trial by Fire
(Going Down in Flames #3)
Published by Entangled Teen
Published on April 4th, 2016

Bryn’s hopes for a peaceful new semester at school go up in smoke when someone tries to kill her—again. She’s not sure which is scarier, facing the radicals who want to sacrifice her for their cause, or her impending nightmare of a Directorate-arranged marriage to her nemesis, Jaxon. The one bright spot in her life is Valmont, her smoking-hot knight who is assigned to watch over her twenty-four hours a day. Is what she feels for him real or just a side effect of the dragon-knight bond? At this point, stopping the impending civil war might be easier than figuring out her love life. She may have to live in their world, but she doesn’t have to play by their rules.

Bryn McKenna has it all. Even though she’s a hybrid dragon, she’s finally fitting in the new shape-shifting dragon world that’s become her own. But her grandparent’s want to ruin everything by making Bryn’s nightmare of an arranged marriage to Jaxon Westgate a reality. It doesn’t help that Jaxon’s father is on a witch hunt for Rebel sympathizers and Bryn finds herself in his line of fire. If she doesn’t say “I do,” she’ll lose everything. Good-bye flying. Good-bye best friends. Good-bye magic. But if she bends to her grandparents’ will and agrees to marry Jaxon she’ll lose the love of her life—her knight.

Fanning The Flames (Going Down in Flames, #4) by Chris Cannon Review

Fanning The Flames (Going Down in Flames, #4)Fanning The Flames by Chris Cannon
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Chris Cannon’s FANNING THE FLAMES, is an amazing addition as the fourth book to the Going Down in Flames series. The story takes place following book three, TRIAL BY FIRE. Red/blue-hybrid dragon shifter, Bryn McKenna, is finally feeling like she is starting to fit in. Things are going well with her knight/boyfriend, Valmont Fonzoli. However, she is waiting to find out if her arranged marriage to, Jaxon Westgate, will be approved. Meanwhile, the Directorate is on the hunt for Rebel sympathizers. Bryn and Jaxon are assigned as student liaisons, thus involved in the controversy. This Contemporary paranormal fantasy is suitable for young adults.

The characters continue to grow and become more dynamic. Bryn has come a long way since the first book. She is starting to think of herself as a dragon, instead of a human. She is smart and good at figuring out plots/conspiracies. Valmont has some understandable issues he faces in this story. His life has completely changed since he became Bryn’s knight and he misses his family. Jaxon is still very much a blue dragon, but we see glimpses of open mindedness that makes him more appealing.

The plot was exceptional. Chris Cannon did a great job recapping the previous books. There were many unexpected twists and compelling conflicts. The story was full of mystery and drama. My heart both broke and rejoiced for some of the things that happened in this story. The ending was thrilling and mixed with emotion. I cannot wait for book five to read where Chris Cannon takes the next story. I voluntarily reviewed an advance reader copy of this book.

Character Interview

Please welcome Brynn from Chris Cannon's Going Down in Flames Series to Diane’s Book Blog.

Character Profile:

What is your full name?

Bryn McKenna

Do you have a nickname?

Nope.

What is your hair color?

Blond with a cherry red stripe at the temple.

Eye color?

Bluish green

How old are you?

16

Where do you currently call home?

The Institute For Excellance aka shape-shifting dragon school

Who are the people you are closest to?

My best friends, Clint and Ivy and my knight Valmont.

What is your biggest fear?

That the Directorate will approve the absurd arranged marriage contract between Jaxon Westgate and myself. While he’s no longer my nemesis, he can still be a colossal asshat. He’s a much better man than his father, and if you didn’t know him you’d think he was handsome. After you get to know him it’s hard to look past his obnoxious elitist attitude.

What is your most treasured possession?

The sapphire bracelet which channels my elemental powers (fire and ice) into a bad-ass sword.

Which living person do you most despise?

Ferrin Westgate, the man my mother abandoned to escape an arranged marriage. He’s the Speaker for the Directorate which means he is one of the most powerful men in shape-shifting dragon society and he sees my existence as a personal insult.

Which words or phrases do you most overuse?

Asshat, especially is Ferrin Westgate or his son Jaxon are nearby.

What is your motto? It’s more of a personal belief:

No talking before coffee.

What was the best part about coming back for a sequel?

There’s so much I want to change about the antiquated dragon society.
