I start for home, the wind and water turning my hair into blond snakes that whip around my head. Less than a quarter mile to my house and it might as well be on the moon. I pull my jacket tighter around my body and pick up my pace. Each harsh breath makes my chest ache, reminding me about the way this morning started.
I shouldn’t be alive.
There’s no other way to say it. When I closed my eyes, parted my lips, and inhaled… I made my choice. That I hadn’t died. That I woke up on the beach… Someone put me there, though I can’t begin to guess their purpose.
Lorelei.
I jump and spin in a circle, searching for the source of the voice. There’s no one in sight. There isn’t even a single pair of headlights on the road. Just the trees whipping back and forth in front of me and the beach at my back. I turn slowly to face the beach—the water—and squint into the driving rain. No part of me is dry at this point, so I might as well investigate.
Lorelei.
There it is again, barely more than a whisper on the wind. Calling me back to the water.
I take a step before what’s left of my self-preservation kicks in. “No.” I don’t mean to say the word aloud, but it settles something inside me. I am not some weak-willed creature to be drawn in by curiosity. Whatever has the power to reach me here on dry land is something I want no part of. “Get the fuck out of my head.” That’s where I must be hearing him. There’s no way he’s actually speaking to me on the wind.
Whoever he is.
I have something you want.
I freeze. The faintest tugging in my stomach dials it up a notch. It never really goes away, even when I’m sequestered in the bookstore and surrounded by earth instead of sea. That tug tells me the exact direction my necklace—my powers—lay. I never get more than a hint of water that’s such a dark blue, it might as well be black, or an intense pressure that conveys exactly how far from the surface my necklace is kept. Too deep for humans and their machines.
Too deep for me.
I start for the beach before I can think better of it. For over two years, I’ve been missing a vital piece of myself, walking around as only half of a whole. I might not be completely helpless in my current state, but I’m easy pickings for any supernatural creature who decides to gun for me. Last night more than proved that the sea will take me, one way or another
It might as well be on my terms.
Lightning flashes, bright enough that spots dance over my vision for the several seconds of silence before thunder rattles my bones. The storm isn’t directly overhead yet, but it will be soon. I’m a damn fool if I’m still out by that point.
I yank off my boots and socks and toss them onto the beach just out of reach of the waves coming faster and faster. One step, maybe two, and I’ll be submerged up to my ankles. My finding power will spiral out of me, instinctively seeking the one item I want more than anything in this goddamn world.
Not my sisters.
Not even the portal home.
No, what I want more than anything is to be whole again.
I should just turn around and go home. Whoever this voice belongs to, they mean nothing good for me. There’s a proper way to reach out, and it’s not by drawing a finless one of the merfolk into the ocean and nearly drowning her human body. Stepping into the ocean will boost what little magic I have left, and it will create a clear channel for him to speak to me.
I take that first step, and then the second. My power streaks out into the deep and then rebounds, slamming me with a vision of my necklace. It’s different than it’s been in the past. Barely any pressure to speak of. Blue-gray water that stretches for miles and miles and miles around without encountering land. A vaguely fishy taste on my tongue.
Tentacles.
And then his voice is in my head, curling through me in a way that’s just shy of being invasive. Hello, pretty.
Telepathy isn’t one of my skills, but apparently his is so strong that it allows me to fire off a reply. Tell me what you want and get out of my head.
His chuckle is pure predator. More like I have something you want.
Surely not. The Deep Dwellers, sworn enemy to my people, wouldn’t be so foolish as to lose a coup like my necklace. In the endless history of wars between our kind, I can’t think of a single instance when they’ve managed to steal the very essence of what one of the merfolk is—to sever one of us from our power. It’s priceless. They wouldn’t have traded it—would have, in fact, guarded it with their lives. So why does this monster in my head have access to it?
I cross my arms over my chest and tell myself that the shiver racking my body is from the cold. I’m listening.
Come to me.
That surprises a laugh out of me. Pass.
You’d turn down a chance to regain yourself?
I’d turn down a chance to walk into a trap like an idiot. I shake my head. This is a waste of time. I turn for the shore when power slams into me, sending me to my knees. The water rushes in—or maybe I rush out—and the next thing I know, I’m up to my chest.
Don’t be a fool.
This deep, I finally have a sense of him. He must have held himself back up to this point, because he’s positively ancient. Older than anything I’ve ever felt—even my father—and so powerful that pain lances through my head. It would be so easy to give him what he wants, to stop fighting, to…
“Get the fuck out of my head!” I sprint for dry land. This deep, it’s more of a fast wade, but I curse and spit and fight the pull of the magic current trying to yank me off my feet. “No, no, no, no, get your stupid magic off me!
He releases me all at once and I fly the last few feet and land in a heap just past the now-normal waves. I sit up and scrub sand from my face. Even without the water connection, his dark amusement slithers through me. Another time, pretty. His presence recedes faster than any tide, leaving the storm just a normal storm.

It’s official—I’m in even worse trouble than I could have imagined.

"Alexei, are you okay?"
"No. I'm not." He turned, facing her now but still staying by the window. Keeping distance between them. "If those two... damnable women had not drugged my stew. If you hadn't seen me with them. If you hadn't been attacked. So many what ifs, and so many lost years. All this time, we could've been together. We could've had every night together. Met every morning in each other's arms." He slashed his arm through the air. "No weeks or months spent wondering if I'd get to see you again. No missing you with every beat of my heart."  The tears steadily flowed. His canines had dropped, and his eyes held the unmistakable telltale yellow of a transitioned Lycan. Claws tipped his fingers. Wolf and man seemed to battle for control, and Lex was emotionally raw. "So many nights I wished you were there, so I could tell you I loved you. Every night, I prayed you were safe. And many nights, I asked God why you couldn't be mine. But. You. Were. And the idiocy of three people cost us two thousand years of happiness."
"You're right," she said as she rose off the bed. "I can't understand why any of this happened. I've questioned the very same thing, and can find no answer. But we're here together now. And isn't that what counts?" He watched as she took slow steps toward him, and his expression slowly began to soften. "In a matter of speaking, you claimed me that night in Portugal, and we've been together since."
His eyes momentarily widened in surprise. "Yes, but we spent so many nights apart. Nothing should have separated us. Nothing." He was right. There was no sense trying to talk him down when she believed what Lex said just as strongly as he did. "You mentioned Portugal. Were you following me?"
Nodding slowly, she now stood in front of him. "Yes. Jules made sure I had control of my hungers, and taught me how to use my strengths. Once that was done, and I was confident in my abilities, I went in search of you. By that time, you were serving the King. And I followed you on your missions."
"When I saw you, I damned near lost track of what I was doing."
She smiled, remembering making eye contact with Lex for the first time. The sensation was electric, the pull of a Lycan mate bond weakened, but still present. "But you did your job, and then you came to me."
His claws retracted, and a smile curling his full lips, he nodded. "And then I came to you." He pulled her into his arms, and embraced her firmly. "I mourn all the moments we lost."
"As do I, Alexei. But we have the future."
His chest shook as he exhaled a ragged breath. "Yes we do. I can't lose you again, Elizabeth."
"I'm here now, and I'm not going anywhere.”

Owner of the Choice Buy store in Michigan, wizard prince Gabriel Light sees his employee, wolf shifter Emma Singer, fall off a tall ladder. He’s just managed to catch her and set her on her feet when her angry pack alpha shows up.
Bzz-bzzt. A buzz like an angry hornet stung wizard prince Gabriel Light’s ears the moment the predator slunk into the store.
Cap’n Crunch me. Gabriel had magically alarmed the door for just such an event, but why now, when he’d finally gotten a semi-innocent excuse to wrap his arms around this warm bundle of soft, sweet-smelling heaven?
Emma. It felt like he’d been dying to hold her forever. Now, with her in his arms, was the first time in months he could breathe.
But that buzzing alarm told him the approaching beast was male, a wolf shifter, and, from that level of sting, Emma’s alpha. The beast was not going to appreciate seeing her in another man’s arms.
She started trembling, no doubt in response to the alpha’s rampant fight-club stench, a musk even Gabriel could smell. He tried to ease her tension with a joke.
“Hey, Emma. How many tickles does it take to make an octopus laugh?”
She skewered him with a disbelieving stare, icing his flesh. He’d blundered, she didn’t understand he was trying to comfort her, nobody gets my skewed sense of humor… Then she gulped and said, “Eight? Like, um, eight legs?”
Immediately his world brightened. “Nope. Ten tickles. Get it? Tentacles?”
She managed a tiny laugh, tinkling bells to his ears, and her body relaxed slightly under his arms. “That was such a dad joke.”
He loved that she, of all the people he knew, actually laughed at his jokes. He smiled into her eyes like a besotted fool.
Of course, that was when the he-wolf prowled into view.
Gabriel wondered how far he could get with the wolf by protesting his intentions were honorable. Probably not far. The creature was only barely in human form.
The wolfman was medium height but had a face like a dented shovel and a body like a trash compactor, his muscles-on-muscles popping in a stringy T-shirt that barely qualified past no-shirt-no-shoes-no-service.
Worse, with the hair sprouting everywhere, nose elongating like a snout, and lengthening canines, this alpha was dangerously pissed.
Hard to reason with a pissed-off wolf. They tended to bite first then ask questions…never.
Yet instead of releasing Emma, Gabriel’s hand dropped from her clenched jaw to open protectively on her back.
“The fuck?” the wolfman snarled.

Something inside Gabriel snarled right back.

Interview

Please welcome Mind Mates author Mary Hughes to Diane’s Book Blog.

Thanks so much to Diane’s Book Blog for hosting Mind Mates today. Love the questions!

What is your favorite part of the story, MIND MATES?

So many favorites! The opening scene came to me years ago (Emma falls off a ladder into her boss’s arms, oh, yum!), and I’ve been dying to find a book to use it. But I really enjoyed playing with Emma and Gabriel trying to hide their attraction from each other.

See, Emma wants Gabriel, but he doesn’t give off a smell like he wants her in return, so she pretends to be simply a good little employee. And Gabriel wants Emma, but he knows witch/shifter sex is taboo and the Witches’ Council would introduce them both to the cleavy end of the headsman’s axe. So he pretends not to care, to the point of magicking up a way to hide the scent of his desire.

When that goes haywire, all heck breaks loose! The first intimate scene after all their sizzling build-up was awesome to write.

How long did it take you to write MIND MATES?

I started planning the series arc before I wrote Heart Mates, Pull of the Moon book 1. Writing Mind Mates itself went pretty fast, for me. I started the proposal June 1, 2015, and had three chapters and a synopsis done by July 9. The first draft of the book took from August 1 to October 30. The editing process went from April, 2016 to June, a little longer than usual because it was spaced out by other projects. So about 5 months in all for 90,000 words. What helped it go fast was Gabriel and Emma being strong, quirky characters, really fun to play off each other.

If you were stranded on a desert island which of your characters do you want by your side?

Gabriel is sexy and hella smart, but he’s in love with Emma, and I wouldn’t want to mess with that! Probably Gabriel’s panther familiar, Pan. As a wisdom creature he’d be able to build anything we needed out of coconuts, and he’s got an enjoyable dry sense of humor. Plus, he’s very sexy, which doesn’t hurt, lol.

If you could be best friends with one of your characters, who would it be?

Emma. She’s sweet but tough, and I’d like to know her better.

Who is your favorite author and what is it that really strikes you about their work?

I have pages and pages of favorite authors, lol. I love the lean way JD Robb (Nora Roberts) writes. I enjoy how Elizabeth Peters combines action, romance, and humor. Jim Butcher is a master at taking story tension and, not just escalating it, but setting a bomb off under it.

Can you share a little of your current work with us?

Ooh! Currently I’m working on the first of a new trilogy called The Ancients. The book’s working title is The Sphinx at Nieman’s Bar.

FBI Special Agent Seb Rikare is an ancient vampire, though he doesn’t look older than mid-twenties or early thirties with his dark, muscular, six-foot-nine build.

Seb is investigating a string of murders and needs the help of an artist working at the New York field office, Brie Lark, to go undercover in her little hometown of Meiers Corners. Problem is, Brie has sworn never to return there.

These two seem total opposites—she annoys him with her colorful hair and clacking bracelets, and he annoys her with his emotional constipation and super-secret-agent enigmatic crap. But the sparks are already flying between them, and I think they’ll have a super happy ending.

After that, I’ll be writing the final book of the Pull of the Moon trilogy, Soul Mates. I’m looking forward to that too!
