He stepped into the doorway and leaned against the frame, watching me. “Yep. I’m a hybrid like you.”

Cutting him a glare, I studied him. I didn’t sense anything other than a wolf inside him. “Hybrid?”

One corner of his sexy mouth lifted while his blue eyes flashed brighter—his wolf looking out at me. “I was born to a witch and a wolf. I took my mother’s side of the gene pool. My twin is the witch.”

“A twin, huh.” I poked at the head wound. It’d heal on the surface but was still tender. At least I didn’t bleed out. Maybe that was why I hadn’t healed all the way. The healing power would have stopped the bleeding and focus on the more critical injuries.

Reid moved farther inside the bathroom, making the already small space seem smaller. “Thomas sent me to find you and your sister. Where is Cassia?”

“She’s safe.” I stared at my reflection in the mirror, not trusting myself enough to make eye contact with the wolf next to me. My long curly blonde hair was an unruly mess and appeared tangled in places. Great, it’d take me forever to get the knots out. Unless… “I had a backpack on.”

Reid darted out of the bathroom and returned a few moments later with my pack. I took it and dropped it on the counter. “Thank you.”

“You’re welcome.”

Digging out a pair of jeans and a black tank top, I placed them beside the pack then found my toiletries. I lifted my gaze back to Reid, who watched me with intense interest. I considered telling him to leave but I still had questions. “I’m going to shower and ask you questions.”

His blue eyes sparked with desire and I fought a groan. Why in the hell did I have to meet my mate while on the run from Harrison’s crazy-ass Hunters? Because the Fates were bored. That had to be it.

He stepped closer. “We could conserve water and shower together.”

Holding up my hand, I shook my head. “Not today, wolf. And before you ask, yes, I feel the mating pull. If you haven’t noticed, I was almost killed and captured. And even though this place has wards, I don’t trust that the Hunters can’t find a way through them.”

He folded his arms over his chest. “I agree. However, we are safe for tonight. I killed the remaining Hunters when you were shot, then covered our tracks. Then I had a team come in to set a few false trails using your scent. I bought us some time. You’re welcome.”

I gaped at him. The cockiness in his tone made me want to punch him. However, the confidence in his words eased my urgency. “Who is this team?”

He removed his shirt and tossed it to the floor behind him, then leaned into me. My pulse increased and liquid desire flooded my body, making me ache in places I didn’t think could ache. A low chuckle escaped him as he stepped back. I watched how his muscles flexed and rolled as he bent to turn the shower on.

“What are you doing?”

He straightened and wicked smile lifted the corners of his lips. “Turning on the shower.”

Smart ass.

When he unbuttoned his pants and pushed them down over his hips and farther, I gasped and shook my head. “I didn’t say you could shower with me.”

“But your scent betrays you.” He chuckled and tested the water.

The scent of his arousal filled the bathroom and I glanced down at his boxer briefs. His erection was impressive and my pussy ached. I groaned in frustration. I didn’t need a mate!

Damn wolf.

Rushing up the stairs, I kept my fingers proverbially crossed that I wouldn’t run into anyone. Especially not Randell. Think about the hot-headed sentry and he appears. I almost turned around and went back down when I heard the top floor door open. I peered up the stairs and saw Randell. Of course. Instead of running, I straightened my spine and held my head high. I hadn’t done anything wrong. Randell hadn’t made any move to claim me. In fact, he seemed dead set against the mating. So, fuck him. When I moved past him, he scented the air. Then, faster than I anticipated, he grabbed my arm and whirled me around to face him. “What the fuck, Tala?” I glanced down at his hand then met his heated stare. “Apparently, I have another mate.” Randell jerked back as if I slapped him, releasing me. I didn’t say another word, just started up the stairs again. He could’ve followed or he could’ve left. I really wasn’t in the mood to care what he did. Unfortunately, he was in the mood to argue. The fact that I smelled like another man and sex didn’t help anything. When I entered the dorms I shared with my sisters, I didn’t bother to close the door. Randell was right behind me and would be even more pissed if I slammed the door in his face. However, the thought did cross my mind. I went straight to my room because I needed to shower. Not for Randell’s benefit, but my own. Fenton’s scent was driving me crazy. Add in Randell’s and damn, I was ready to fuck both of them. At once. Nope. I shut that thought down. As mates, I was sure eventually that would be on the agenda, but my body responded too readily to the idea, which meant I needed to let it go for now. Damn. I did close my bedroom door, which did nothing to keep the growly sentry out, of course. Randell barged in with a snarl. I glanced at him with one raised eyebrow. He crowded me, trying to intimidate me. Whatever. It wouldn’t work. “What are you doing?” I placed a hand on his large chest and pushed. It was effective enough to make him take a step back. “I am going to take a shower.” If he didn’t move I’d show him who was the damn alpha in this relationship. “That’s not what I’m talking about.” I knew what he meant. With a sigh, I crossed my arms and glared at him. “You have made it clear that you don’t want this mating.” Like he had any choice in the matter. I poked him in the chest. “So don’t get in my face because I found a second mate and acted on the flood of desires that comes along with it.” He growled again. “You didn't think it would be good to talk to me first?” Oh, Hell no. My fangs lengthened and my wolf snarled. Fury built inside me and my water boiled under the surface, this time out of anger, not desire. I may not have been a fire element like Meda, but I could pull on her heat to boil my water. “You don’t have a say in what I do. You are my sentry, here to protect me, not order me around.” Sometimes, like now, Meda’s heat came to me in anger or desire, whether I called on it or not. I needed a cold shower to calm me down. Hell, what I needed was to drown in my water. Although water would never kill me, no matter how long I stayed under, when I was in the water I didn’t need to breathe, because I was the water. “You can’t say I don’t get a say,” he said in a deadly low voice. I laughed humorlessly. “Says who?” Turning on my heels, I entered the bathroom, slamming the door behind me. Stripping out of my clothes, I tossed them into the hamper. Jerking the shower curtain open, I turned on the cold water. I was so pissed at Randell that my internal water was still boiling hot. I needed the cold to counter it or I risked losing control. Hopefully, it would calm me down in the process. Several minutes after I stepped under the cold sprays, Randell joined me. Damn it, I was still pissed at him. Why did he have to bring his gorgeous ass—and dick—into my shower? “Don’t. I’m pissed.” Giving him my hardest glare, I tried to ignore his hard cock when I really wanted to bounce on it. Damn him. “I know.” He stepped closer and I groaned as his cock pressed against my hip. Then he fisted his hand in my hair and pulled. “I never said I didn’t want to mate. I’m still processing it. “You will choose a mate, and then take the throne.” Lilith’s voice resonated with a finality that made me cringe. I held in my irritation and scanned the great throne room. When she put her power into her words, no one—not even me—could disobey.

Fucking rules.

Lilith was my mother—and Lucifer knew I loved her—but I couldn’t rule the vampires while under her thumb and no more than her puppet. When I did become the High King of the vampires, there were going to be changes. The old ways didn’t work for us as they once did.

I fisted my hands over the arms of my throne. Why we were meeting in the great room to discuss my mating situation was beyond me. Mother was supposed to be gone already, but The Blood—the vampire council—demanded I find a mate first. They never gave their reasons, which made me suspicious.

“Mother, it isn’t that easy.” My chest tightened with an unfamiliar feeling. Longing and loneliness stirred within. I’d already met my mate, not that it would do me any good. I couldn’t claim my one true mate, ever.

It was several years ago. My guard had convinced me to go to a local bar owned by one of their own that catered to both vampires and lycans. Many of the lycans attended public schools with the humans, able to blend in all but one night a month when the moon was full. The younger lycans were notorious for bar-hopping, and vampires weren’t much different.

A vampire-owned bar wasn’t unusual. We owned the night, after all, and humans in bars made poor choices, leaving us open to feed without detection or having to use our telepathic abilities. Using telepathy to mask our feeding always drained us.

We’d entered a local bar that particular night, and I’d almost left when I smelled them. Lycans. A growl escaped me as I walked through the door, my guard flanking me. It was no secret that vampires and lycans had warred since the beginning of time. Well, maybe not that long, but there were times it felt that way.

Scanning every dark corner of the place, I spotted several of the wolves crammed into booths in near the back of the bar. The entire establishment reeked of them, so I slowed my breathing to minimize the overwhelming scent of dog.

Ignoring the lycans, my guard and I made our way to the bar where a small group of vampires close to my age gathered. They met my gaze briefly and nodded their heads once in a slight bow. I nodded back in greeting. One thing I hated about being the vampire prince was my people insisted on being at attention in my presence. It was annoying. My people weren’t fucking puppets.

They were people with lives. As long as they didn’t expose us to the humans, I didn’t care what they did.

It was one thing I was already starting to change—I only wanted them to address me formally when I was sitting on my throne.

Once seated, the bartender took our drink orders and left. My guard rested against the bar so he could watch the door and my back simultaneously. “You know there are large factions of younger vampires in favor of ending our centuries-long feud with the lycans.”

Yeah, I knew. However, I had little interest. “Nothing I can do about it at the moment.”

My time to rule would come soon enough—three to four years to be exact – and I didn’t want to waste my free years worrying about vampire-lycan politics.

The air conditioning kicked on, blowing cool air through the bar and mixing the scents of vampire and lycans. That was when her scent hit me full-force, nearly knocking me off my stool. Rose water and mint, mixed with an intoxicating earthy spice that called to my soul. My body heated and my heart pulsed, pumping blood straight to my dick. What the fuck?

My head whipped around, searching for the owner of that scent—the scent of my mate. When I spotted her, the noise from the bar around me seemed to disappear for a few moments. Her wavy chestnut hair was pulled back in a high ponytail, and two thick strands of hair framed her oval face. She wore a pair of faded blue jeans with tears cut into the thighs and a black T-shirt that said, “I howl at the moon.”

She was a lycan. Fuck me.

“Who is she?” I nudged my guard. He came to the bar frequently and was more likely to know. I suspected he was one of the ones encouraging vampires to give lycans a chance.

My guard followed my line of sight and grunted. “Jillian,” he said. “She’s hot, but she’s too hot. Trouble. She’s the lycan princess, only heir to the High Alpha.”

Fuck me. She was my mate. I knew it as surely as I knew I could never be with her. An ache formed in my soul at that thought. Normally I didn’t have a problem with breaking the rules and taking what was mine. But this was different.

I had to take the vampire throne one day soon and choose a vampire mate. It was the law and my future. A future I’d have to live without my fated mate. I’d never be accepted if I had a lycan as my mate, much less the lycan princess.

This is a fun Valentine Day themed box set. While A Valentine for Two has a common manage/Valentine Day theme; the stories are all very different. You have a little of everything: romance, erotica, drama, humor, sports, and paranormal.

I admit, I was drawn to the box set because of Cassandra Carr’s TWO ON ONE BREAKAWAY. I follow her hockey romances and was excited for this new story that was tied into her Buffalo Storm series. It was my favorite book in the anthology and an excellent addition to the Storm series. Two hockey teammates, Derek Gant and Ian Terry, were into sharing a woman. They meet Haley, who has never been in a ménage relationship before. I enjoyed the chemistry between the threesome. There were some fascinating relationship, business, and hockey situations (like trades) that made the story interesting. I love that previous Storm characters played a role throughout the story. If you have not read this series, the book works as a standalone.

The only other authors included in the box set whose work I have read before are Lia Davis and Angelica Dawson. I enjoyed being exposed to so many new authors. This is a great steamy read that is appropriately titled. I voluntarily reviewed an advance reader copy of this book.
