Off the Ice (Central State, #4) by Jaqueline Snowe Review

Off the Ice (Central State, #4)Off the Ice by Jaqueline Snowe
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Creative Writing student Elle Van Helsing took a job at a local dive bar by her apartment. When an emergency occurred, the bar owner needed to go out of town for a few weeks; his nephew, hockey captain, Cal Holt, offered to help at the bar. Elle has had a crush on Cal for over two years. Cal is afraid to get close to anyone after his parents’ death. He has also been warned away from Elle by her brother and his teammate, Gabe (TAKE THE LEAD, Central State #3).

Jaqueline Snowe does a great job with the character development in this story. Elle felt like she lived in her brother's shadow. She feels like her parents and brother do not respect her choice of major. Cal has separated himself from people after his parents’ death. He doesn’t have the best reputation. My heart went out to him. The two end up spending a lot of time together. It starts out rough. There are insults and misunderstandings. As the two get to know each other, they help each other. I love how Cal is always watching out for Elle's wellbeing.

The story is skillfully written and believable. It is a heartwarming addition to the Central State series. I voluntarily reviewed an advance reader copy of this book.
