Sawyer Bennett is on a winning streak with COEN (Pittsburgh Titans, #4). I have been anxiously awaiting captain Coen Highsmith’s story. He was one of the three Pittsburgh Titans players who did not die in the plane crash. He was out with the flu. Survivor’s guilt is not the only guilt he is suffering from.
Coen buys a cabin in the deep woods in Coudersport from teammate Stone Dumelin (Book 2). He ends up in a legal battle with his neighbor, Tillie Marshall. Tillie wants to remove some trees in the easement of their property to construct a driveway to access an art studio she is having built. Coen wants his privacy and does not want the trees taken down.
Coen does not have a good relationship with his parents. He was raised by the staff. He found a family in hockey, but after the crash, he is contemplating giving hockey up. He was loved by his team mates prior to the crash. Afterward, he has secluded himself and has been a jerk to the people around him.
Tillie is a likable character. Her parents passed away in an accident. She is from Coudersport. She was not part of the popular crowd growing up. Coen intervenes when Tillie is being bullied by some former classmates. The two form an interesting relationship; they are attracted to each other, but they are still enemies. They help each other heal in the process.
COEN is skillfully written and heartfelt. It was the perfect addition to the Pittsburg Titans series. I am looking forward to Drake McGinn’s story next. I voluntarily reviewed an advance reader copy of this book.
