What happens when the beautiful swan becomes the ugly duckling?
Starr Valentine has a perfect life in Middleton, Ohio. She was named captain of the cheer squad, her mother finally allowed her to get highlights, and the cutest boy in school asked her to homecoming. But everything comes crashing down when she finds out her parents are actually monarchs in exile from a mysterious planet called Vega. Starr doesn’t want to leave, but loves the idea of being a princess, and decides moving to an alien world might not be so bad. When she gets there, however, she discovers that something is terribly wrong.
Starr has always been the winner of the family, but now everyone is fawning over her chubby older sister, Astra. And everyone, even a handsome and annoying young duke named Julian, seems to hate her. That is when she realizes the awful truth. Astra is now the pretty one. Astra has all the friends. Astra gets all of the attention. And Starr Valentine, voted Miss Perfect, is now the ugly duckling. Her biggest fear is…will she be able to turn back into a swan, or is she doomed to be a loser forever?
Wende Dikec has spent her life traveling the world, and collecting stories wherever she visited. She writes in several romance genres, and her books are quirky, light, and fun. Fluent in several languages and married to a man from Istanbul, Wende is a trekkie, a book hoarder, master of the Nespresso machine, and mother of three boys. A puppy named Capone is the most recent addition to her family, and she blogs about him as a way of maintaining what little sanity she has left.

What is your full name?
Starr Valentine. My sister’s name is Astra. Our parents named both of us after planetary bodies. So annoying.
What is your hair color?
Blonde. The color is closest to what is called Upper East Side blonde in Vogue’s 50 Shades of Blonde. My mom just let me get highlights, and I love it. I also love the Upper East Side. And I’m obsessed with Vogue, especially French Vogue. Before the whole princess gig started, I dreamed of working there one day.
Sapphire blue. Almost exactly the same shade as Princess Diana’s engagement ring. She was one of my top ten fashion icons. It’s now worn by the Duchess of Cambridge, one of my top five fashion icons - in the non-blonde category, of course.
How old are you?
I just turned sixteen. I’ve been waiting for this my whole life since it means I can finally drive and somehow convince my parents to buy me the sports car I’ve been dreaming about since I was little and bought Barbie’s First Hot Rod (it was pink – and glorious). Sadly, I celebrated instead while riding in a giant, grey, hulking transport ship to planet Vega. The irony of this whole situation is that there are no cars on Vega and definitely no hot rods. I’ve been basically waiting my whole life for something that will never happen. It’s tragic.
Where were you born?
I was born on the planet Vega, but I have absolutely no memory of it. I spent most of my life (the happy, perfect, sane part) in Middleton, Ohio. When I found out we had to move back to Vega, it was sort of the beginning of the end of everything going completely wrong with my whole life.
Who are the people you are closest to?
Although we have almost nothing at all in common, I’m closest to my sister, Astra. We are total opposites in every possible way, but I know she’s always got my back, and I’ve got hers.
What is your biggest fear?
I’m afraid I’ll never be pretty again. I was beautiful on Earth, and I liked being beautiful. I was really good at it. Here on Vega, however, the standard of beauty is different, and I’m not pretty anymore. Instead, everyone fawns over Astra – the one person who never cared about how she looked. I used to love my life. Not anymore.
