Interview

Please welcome author Susan Scott Shelley to Diane’s Book Blog.

Who is your favorite author and what is it that really strikes you about their work?

Nora Roberts was the first romance author I ever read, and The MacGregor Brides was my first book. I instantly fell in love with her writing style and the characters and worlds she created. I love the layering, the emotion, the characters, the setting, the dialogue - It all blends together so perfectly into an amazing reading experience. She transports you into the book’s world, and you're there, experiencing everything right along with the characters. That is the mark of a great writer.

What's your favorite book-turned movie?

This one is hard for me, because I almost always believe that the book is better than the movie, but The Princess Bride is one movie that I actually enjoy better than the book. I’m not sure if it’s because I’ve seen so many actor interviews or heard so many behind the scene stories about the making of the film, but I adore that movie. There’s something so magical about it.

What is your typical day like?

I also work as a voice over artist, so depending on the day, I’ll spend part of it in the recording booth, part of it editing the spots I’ve recorded, and then the rest of the day writing. The timing varies, so I may write in the morning, afternoon, or late at night, depending on how many, or what time, the voice jobs come in. But through that, I've learned I can write almost anywhere.

What book are you reading now

I’m reading a few. Carly Phillips Dare to Love series, Setta Jay’s The Guardians of the Realms series, and Skye Jordan’s Renegades series. And I'm working my way through David Maraniss' When Pride Still Mattered: A Life of Vince Lombardi. (I love football as much as I love hockey).

What do you love most about hockey?

Hockey players are some of the toughest athletes out there. Injuries that would keep a player of a different sport out of the game are brushed off or ignored, because nothing will drag a hockey player off of the ice. I love their toughness and their dedication to their team and to their fans. They give it their all, every game. I also love the skill, the hard hits, and the speed. I love the history and the traditions. I love it all.

Who is you favorite real life hockey team?

The New York Rangers are my favorite team. The Philadelphia Flyers are my second favorite. (I grew up in Philly. And no, I don't have any problems rooting for two teams in the same division, I think it's fun). I also love the Vancouver Canucks.

What do you prefer paperback, hardcover, or ebooks?

I prefer paperbacks and ebooks. I’m happy with either and don’t really have a preference between the two. Hardcovers are nice to have but I don’t buy them too often. I always carry at least one book with me in my purse, and paperbacks or my kindle are more portable than a hardcover, especially with all of the other “necessary” or “carried because you never know when you’ll need it” items taking up space in the bag.

Do you have anything specific that you want to say to your readers?

Thank you. Thank you for supporting my books and loving my characters. And, thank you for letting me know that you love them. Your enthusiasm is so awesome, and I’m so grateful for you!
