Perverse
by Larry Rodness
Interview:
Please welcome author,Larry Rodness, who has stopped by to answer some questions and share some details about his book, Perverse.
What inspired you to write Perverse?
It actually arose out of boredom. The kernel of the story came to me one day when I was browsing in an antique shop. I saw a sketch of a rural scene in winter. I asked myself, what would happen if I looked at the scene again and noticed footprints in the snow that weren’t there before. Then I asked myself, who would have made those footprints and what would she be doing there?
What is your favorite part of the story, Perverse?
Favorite aspects of my novel are the ‘twists’ where the reader realizes the story is going in a different direction than what they expected. Not only are they’re happily surprised but excited to see what happens next. A favorite part of my story has to do with a sector of Toronto (where much of the story takes place) I have named “Other-Town”. Not to give away a plot point but it’s a place where evil germinates, grows, and threatens to overtake the entire city.
If you were stranded on a desert island which of your characters do you want by your side?
I would choose Emylene, the heroine, because although she is slow to pick up on the threat around her, when she does, she knows what she has to do and lets nothing stop her.
If you could be best friends with one of your characters, who would it be?
Laszlo Biraj is a character who has endured many trials in his 60 odd years. His experience and perspective on good and evil would enable me to learn the most from him.
Who or what inspired you to be a writer?
My English ‘prof’ at university gave me a failing grade on a paper, then suggested I write an original story to redeem myself. I was surprised to learn how much I loved the creative aspect of storytelling.
How do you overcome writer’s block?
I admit that it is there and don’t worry about overcoming it. It is like any fear. The more you dwell on it, the more it affects you. Once you acknowledge it you rob it of its power. Sooner or later inspiration returns. It always does.
Can you share a little of your current work with us?
I am writing a novel entitled “October 32”. In this story an insurance agent named Alexander Malefant is sent to a small village on the day of Halloween. When the children go out ‘trick or treating’ that night, they all disappear. Alex and the people of the village have to find out what happened.

My Review:
My rating: 4 of 5 stars
Emylene Stipe, is a nineteen-year-old, rare second generation Goth. Her parents are extremely influential within the Goth community, making her Goth Royalty.
Her life changes when she purchases a drawing at an antique store. Emylene releases a woman from the sketch whom she names Poinsetta. Imagine her surprise when Poinsetta turns her life upside down making Emylene question her entire belief system.
Perverse is a thought-provoking action packed novel. I love the whole idea around the footprints in the painting containing Poinsetta. The concept is unique and intriguing.
The characters are well-developed and interesting. Rodness does an excellent job showing the characters growth throughout the novel; especially Emylene who questions her life and values.
This book gets better and better as you read it. Perverse has a lot of interesting twists and turns. When I say lots, I mean lots.
