Book Description:

They see death. Can they share a life?

Ruth Scott can read the energy of every person she meets. Then she meets Deacon Walker. She can see his ice-blue eyes, his black hair, and his gorgeous face. But this beautiful stranger has no aura.

Deacon is just as unsettled by Ruth—and, having spent more than two hundred years ushering souls to Purgatory, Deacon is seldom shocked by anything. As he helps Ruth to understand her true nature, she awakens desires that he decided long ago a Reaper can’t afford.

A demon invasion forces Deacon to confront the darkness in his own past even as he fights to save the human souls he’s charged to protect. When he’s taken captive, his first concern is for Ruth. But Ruth just might be able to save herself—and the Reaper she can’t live without—if she can learn to wield her newfound powers.

Not their first meeting but the first with introductions:

“Ruth, my name is Deacon. You might have noticed that I have some rather unusual abilities. For one, I’m very fast when I want to be. For another, I can affect your mood by touch, which I did just now to calm you. I don’t want to hurt you, but I do need to know a few things. What are you?”
What am I? Uh, a girl would be a good start. What the hell?
She shook her head side to side, indicating “No.”
“No, you don’t understand? Or no, you don’t know what you are?” he asked, obviously growing frustrated.
She shook her head again.
“Okay, this isn’t going to work unless you speak. I don’t read minds, you know.”
Good to know, she thought. What came out was, “I don’t understand.”
“When we ran into each other at the hospital, you had no aura. What are you? Are you a reaper? An angel? Christ on a crutch, you aren’t a valkyrie, are you?” he asked, running a hand through his hair, pushing it away from his face. “I’m betting no on the angel front because the Reiki energy doesn’t seem to work on angels. So what are you?”
“A student. Or, I was a student. Now I’m just… I don’t know what you’re talking about—angels and reapers and valkyries. I’m…human?”
“You are more than human.”
“I’m not. What do you want with me?”
“I want answers. In the hospital, I sensed something about you when we met… Your mother was Mary Scott. Correct? She died in that hospital room while you were there?”
“I didn’t do that. It wasn’t my fault,” she blurted out.
“Okaaay,” he proceeded cautiously. “Did you touch her before you left?”
She considered him, her mouth going dry. She had touched her. She’d given her that final kiss on the forehead.
“Yes,” she whispered.
Ruth couldn’t look at him as she began to realize what all of this might mean. Had her bizarre handicap really killed her father, and now her mother, too?
She was a killer.
“You’re not a killer,” he said, rolling his eyes.
“I thought you couldn’t read minds!” She sobbed, tears choking her throat closed.
It’s my fault. I AM a killer.
“You’re not,” he insisted. “I think you’re a reaper, like me.”
Her heart starting beating faster and her vision started to go blurry around the edges. The whole room sped down a black chute into darkness. She was going to pass out. She was going to pass out with a strange supernatural man in her house.
God help me.

Excerpt

Chapter One
“Hurry up, Sarah. We’re going to miss the ghost!”
Sarah Knight rolled her eyes in the cold December darkness, but trotted after Ellie’s bouncing flashlight beam. Sarah’s heels crunched through the frozen topsoil as she crossed the lawn, and she worried about the damage being done to her only pair of sensible work shoes. Ellie had failed to mention this would be on an outdoor excursion.
Ellie had been dragging her out on girls’ nights against her better judgment since they graduated from college. Last month, they’d gone to a mixed martial arts fight, complete with blood, screaming and more than one missing tooth. And that had been the spectators.
It was only in the car on the way over that Sarah had learned tonight’s adventure would be a ghost hunt. Ellie had a strange idea of fun.
Sarah and Ellie caught up to the tour group as the leader, a tall dark-haired man in his mid-forties, wrapped up his ghost-hunting protocol explanation. She’d missed the rules. Ellie wouldn’t care about missing that part. She hated following the rules, but Sarah was a little miffed. If she was going ghost hunting, she wanted to know exactly what the boundaries were.
“Great,” Sarah whispered. “We missed the rules.”
“At least we didn’t miss the ghost,” Ellie pointed out. “And they haven’t doled out the equipment yet.” Ellie’s mouth split into a mischievous smile, and she angled up closer to the group leader.
“Again, my name is Allen, if you have any questions during the tour. Since we have such a large group tonight, we’ll split into two teams. Carla will take this half.” Allen sliced an imaginary line through the group of twenty or so ghost-hunters. “And the rest of you will go with me.”
Relieved she and Ellie were on the same side of the line, Sarah snuggled up closer to her friend and surveyed the rest of their team. A middle-aged couple, a grandmotherly woman, and a group of ten sorority girls—exactly the type of girls she’d avoided in college—made up Team Allen. The girls sported matching Greek-lettered sweatshirts, scarves and mittens and tittered incessantly. Sarah was fairly sure their chance of seeing a ghost with this group was nil. Fine with her. Ellie was the one who went for the paranormal stuff.
“We’ll walk the path where the Lady in White has typically been spotted. Carla’s team will cover the grounds around the house,” Allen said. He nodded to Carla, and she gave him a little salute, then led her team around to the side of the building. Allen’s group stayed put in the doorway.
“First, I’ll need a couple of volunteers,” Allen announced.
Ellie’s hand shot up before Sarah could register what was happening. “We’ll do it.”
Classic Ellie, leaping before she looked. She didn’t even know what she was volunteering for. It could be anything. If Allen wanted virgins to sacrifice, however, he was out of luck.
Allen pulled two little handheld meter devices out of his messenger bag. His brows lowered a bit as he studied Ellie, cast his eyes around the group, then settled back to her. Ellie’s enthusiasm won out and Allen handed one device to her and the other to Sarah.
“This is the Anomaly Detector,” Allen said with all the reverence of presenting the sword Excalibur. “It measures EMP and temperature. If these lights change, it’s your job to let us know. I’ll be taking photos and interacting with the ghost, trying to draw her out. I can’t keep my eyes on all of the devices at once. Can you manage this?”
“Absolutely,” Ellie squealed.
Sarah resisted rolling her eyes again. She accepted the detector and did her best to reduce her scowl.
“It’s okay to be skeptical,” Allen said. “It makes it all the more exciting when we convert you to a believer.” His smile warmed and Sarah realized he was actually handsome. Old, but handsome. What an otherwise normal and attractive man—who was way old enough to know better—was doing leading a bunch of ghost hunters, she had no idea. People were strange. She supposed she’d have to include herself in that judgment, considering she now held a ghost detector.

Character Interview

Please welcome Sarah Knight from Lisa Medley's Haunt My Heart to Diane’s Book Blog.

What is your name? Do you have a nickname?

Sarah Knight

What is your hair color? Eye color?

Brown hair, green eyes.

How old are you?

23

Where were you born? Where have you lived since then? Where do you currently call home?

I was born in Georgia but moved in the past few months to Fredericksburg, VA for my job as a web developer. I love it here!

What is in your refrigerator right now? On your bedroom floor? On your nightstand? In your garbage can?

In my fridge? Erm, not much. I eat out a lot. I think there’s still some good yogurt in there and cheese and lemon water. On my bedroom floor? Mostly cat hair from Bitly. On my nightstand? My phone with somewhere around a bazillion missed calls from Jason. No messages though. Why can’t people just leave a freakin’ message? In my garbage can? Mostly cat food and takeout containers.

Who are the people you are closest to?

My friend, Ellie. She’s great but she insists we go on these girls’ nights out. They are getting progressively more ridiculous. Last week she made me go on a ghost hunt and it was mortifying. My phone set off the EMF detector and the hunt leader took my device away. Ellie got to keep hers. No ghost by the way.

What is your most treasured possession?

Right now I guess that would be this ring I found at Chatham Manor after the ghost hunt. I’ve been having some amazing luck lately and I think it might be tied to this ring. The only bad thing is the ring is probably an artifact, and I should turn it in at Chatham. I will. Soon.

What or who is the greatest love of your life?

Last week, I would have said Jason because we’ve been together for the past five years. Well, together might be pushing it. He’s changed, and I’m starting to wonder if maybe it’s time to break things off.

Which living person do you most despise?

Definitely my boss, Candace Day. Seriously. She’s a piece of work.

What do you most value in your friends?

Loyalty and humor.
