Pulling the Goalie Lasairiona E. McMaster

Title: Pulling the Goalie
Series: Cedar Rapids Raccoons
Author: Lasairiona McMaster
Genre: Sports Romance
Tropes: Opposites Attract, College Hockey Romance
Release Date: May 11, 2023

Can the girl who hides in the shadows date a guy who chases the spotlight?

Eloise:
Ares de la Peña: sports star, stripper, bisexual playboy.
He lives for the limelight. He’s everything I should avoid, yet I’m drawn to him in ways I don’t understand.
As our world’s collide, I discover he’s more than just the flashy heir to a billion dollar fortune.
I’ll never fit into his world. But I want to.

Ares:
What is it about this girl?
She hides her scars behind her bright hair, quirky clothing, and striking lipstick, but I see her.
She’s the calm that quiets my demons, while running from her own.
My reputation precedes me, which is usually a good thing, but in this case her preconceived notions about me aren’t working in my favor.
How can I make her see that what we have is far more than skin deep?

Lasairiona McMaster writes sassy, classy and badassy women and strong, yet vulnerable men. She challenges reader’s expectations by openly dealing with mental health issues, often exploring tough-to-handle topics and ‘taboos’ and books with a whole lotta heart.

She can either be found enjoying a gin and lemonade by the Irish sea, or baking sweet treats in her kitchen while singing at the top of her lungs. When she’s ‘home’ in Texas, and isn’t eating fresh-popped popcorn while buying things she has absolutely no need for in Target, she can be found at Chuys eating her body weight in chips and queso and washing it down with a margarita swirl. She loves to make friends out of strangers.

Pulling the Goalie (Cedar Rapids Racoons #2) Lasairiona E. McMaster Review

Pulling the Goalie (Cedar Rapids Raccoons #2)Pulling the Goalie by Lasairiona E. McMaster
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Lasairiona E. McMaster gets a shutout with PULLING THE GOALIE (Cedar Rapids Raccoons #2). Eloise Downing and Ares de la Peña are opposites. Eloise is a shy and studious nursing student who likes to hide in the shadows. Ares is an in the spotlight hockey goalie, stripper, bisexual party boy. However, they both have scars; Eloise on the outside and Ares on the inside.

Lasairiona E. McMaster does an amazing job with this story. The characters have deep dimensions. There is so much more to them than what the casual observer would see. I really enjoyed Ares's character. He was different than most hockey heroes. I love his pets. He has interesting viewpoints. He has flaws. He has owned up to things he has done in the past.

PULLING THE GOALIE is a thought-provoking and heartwarming read. It is skillfully written and a perfect addition to the Cedar Rapids Raccoons series. It ends in a cliff hanger. I’m anxiously awaiting book three, CRASHING THE NET. I voluntarily reviewed an advance reader copy of this book.

Four Letter Feelings by Lasairiona E. McMaster Review

Four Letter FeelingsFour Letter Feelings by Lasairiona E. McMaster
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

In this story, hockey player Jeremy Lewis looks forward to starting college after traveling in Europe over the past year. He meets and becomes roommates with AJ Williams (from Game Changer/Lisa Millar series). He bumps into a friend from his past, Chelsea Davis, and hopes to start a relationship with her. Meanwhile, Jeremy's parents are murdered, and he struggles to cope. This novel is suitable for new adult readers.

FOUR LETTER FEELINGS did a good job capturing a timeline and experiences of a college freshman. Then it adds in the heartbreak of the death of Jeremy’s parents and the fallout that happens as a result. I love that Jeremy and AJ become such good friends. They need each other and become like brothers. AJ’s family is amazing. I appreciated that they are there for Jeremy. The story covers significant issues like dealing with grief and Bipolar Disorder. I voluntarily reviewed an advance reader copy of this book.

Game Changer by Lasairiona E. McMaster Review

Game ChangerGame Changer by Lasairiona E. McMaster
My rating: 3 of 5 stars

In this story, college hockey defenseman AJ Williams meets a girl from Northern Ireland, Lisa Millar, over the Internet; sort of a blind date set up by friends. They totally hit it off and become enamored with one another. However, AJ has been keeping a secret from Lisa, which she discovers on a surprise visit to Alabama to meet AJ.

I frequently found the book to be confusing. It often took getting through a paragraph until you knew who was speaking. The story didn’t always flow well. When I was at about 45% of the book, I almost gave up reading it, but decided to work through it. It did get better. An unexpected outcome happened in the story that held my interest.

At the end of the novel, I read the author’s notes and discovered that this was not the initial book to tell AJ and Lisa’s story. If I read the other books first, I may have felt differently and not have been as confused with the writing. I did like the concept of the novel. I am curious about the other books in the series. I will probably pick up the first book, Intimate Strangers and start the books in the proper order. I voluntarily reviewed an advance reader copy of this book.
