With two newly mated couples in the alpha house, Conall needs a serious breather. He’s used to being the fifth wheel but now the distinction is amplified. When the opportunity for a couple days of freedom arises, he volunteers to take winter supplies to a mountain-dwelling widow and then spend some time hiking alone. Plans change when he meets a woman who evokes his lion’s protective streak and stirs his human desires. She meets none of his expectations for a mate, but that might be exactly what he needs.

Madelyn has been alone for nearly a decade. Ashamed of what she has become, she banished herself from the Blackburn Pack and resigned herself to a solitary life in the mountains. With no plans of change, it’s alarming when a young, alluring lion shifter arrives awakening her senses and challenging her situation. Her inner bear is still haunted by the last man who tried to claim her and she doesn’t want to make the same mistake again.  Madelyn must discern if Conall is worth the risk or of he’s another heartbreak just waiting to happen.

While Conall is tucked away in the woods with Madelyn, the rest of his Pride faces an attack. In haste to go rescue his friends, he might throw the most vulnerable person of all to the wolves. But are they friend or foe?

Leaving the truck, he unhitched the cart. It was colder up here, but his lion didn’t mind. Conall sniffed the area, made sure no unsuspecting humans were going to get the scare of a lifetime, and shifted into a massive African lion. The harness he and Sampson rigged up last night worked perfectly. He slipped it over his head, resting it on his shoulders. The lion started his trek up the mountains, having memorized the map.
It was all too easy to let his mind wander, to think about absolutely nothing except for where his paws would land with the next step. The walking path to the cabin was clear if you knew to look for the notches in the trees. He could travel like this all day and not get bored, never tire. Being in the wilderness liberated his lion; the burden he carried behind him only added a minor challenge to his muscular frame.
This was exactly what he needed.
The next four hours passed slowly and quietly, a vast change from the chaos of the last few weeks. For the first time in a long time, he turned off his brain and let his lion dominate his actions. His wide paws navigated the terrain with no problems. His ears alerted him to the movement of the forest creatures and his nose picked up the various scents of nature. Conall lost himself into his lion and his human counterpart took a well-needed mental nap.
Then he heard an angel.
The voice echoed around the woods and he froze with one paw off the ground. His feline ears perked up. After living with Vivian Blake, diva extraordinaire, for five years, he knew musical talent when he heard it. Vivian had the most beautiful voice he’d ever heard…until right then. Closing his eyes, he crouched down, still as death, to listen. The notes rose and fell flawlessly on pitch and with incredible ease. Her range was awe-inspiring. His breath caught in his throat as he listened to her build up to a note so high and delicate, it caused his heart to soar in anticipation. The emotion of the words, the love conveyed in every measure resonated in his chest. Tendrils of melody wrapped around him, gripping him tighter with every beat. Had he been in human form, he might have fallen to his knees. As it was, the four legs of his lion shook with the driving need to get closer to the source of such mesmerizing singing.
He took cautious steps over the crest of the hill to look upon the cottage set snugly among the evergreens. Green tin roof and logs made from local timber provided camouflage. Smoke rose from the chimney; the smell traveling the air currents was divine. Three chairs rocked on the porch, pushed by the invisible hands of the wind. Although the coming winter cold had scared them away, it was clear the cottage was usually framed with flowers. A brown picket fence protected a garden. He envisioned Snow White singing to the forest creatures as they scuttled around her feet.
Ha, he thought. Any moment now, some old woman would come outside with a radio in her hand.
He didn’t want the fantasy to end. The lion closed his eyes and let the gentle voice wash over him. Peace settled in his chest, a heavy weight dissolved from his shoulders. The notes infiltrated his veins and he felt absolutely drunk with contentment. Her love song pierced him and eased each breath he took.
Incredible…
The notes cut off as soon as the wind shifted.
“Who’s there?” chimed an angelic voice. His singer.

AMILYNN SNUGGLED INTO the warm arms that were around her. God, Ezekiel smelled like heaven. The sweet honey of his mating scent filled her mind and made her inner leopard purr with desire. It was so easy to sleep when his strong arms held her close and kept her safe. He was there for her in her time of distress, waiting to see if her best friend would pull through the night. He’d given his own blood to save Vivian’s life. Amilynn never thought she could find peace in the middle of a hospital, in the midst of a catastrophe like this, and yet Ezekiel gave it to her.

Her cat had never been more satisfied, even if he was a wolf.

While Ezekiel kept her safe, Ami could focus on the crisis at hand. Vivian had to live. She had to make it. If there was no hope for Vivian to live a full life of love and happiness, then what chance did Amilynn have? Vivian was wilder, more feral in her independence than Ami and, somehow, she’d found a mate in Kasey Blackburn who was worthy of her devotion. The wolf alpha had shown his love for Vivian time and time again, gaining the trust of the rest of her Pride. But look where it got them. The songs were bullshit. Love is not all you need.

Vivian fought for her life in that hospital because members of Kasey’s Pack didn’t want the Pride coming in. The feline shifters didn’t belong there, so they said. The Pack might be a mixture of wolves and bear, but adding felines to the mix was more than some of them could handle. The rebellious group had done a fine job of letting Amilynn and her family know they weren’t welcome.

Amilynn, in particular, had been warned off the males of the Pack. Here she sat in Ezekiel’s arms, the arms of a future alpha. Wouldn’t that cause another rebellion? The hookers and hounds, what a mess.

Her cat came to attention when a rumbling in Ezekiel’s chest woke her up. The low growl was aggressive and full of warning. Her eyes popped open, ready to defend her family at any cost.

“Easy, fool,” Tyrone, her brother, warned Ezekiel in gravelly bass.

Ezekiel, who had also been awakened with a start, gripped Ty’s hand. It took a couple of seconds for all of them to realize there was no threat.

“V’s awake.” Ty yanked from Ezekiel’s grasp.

Amilynn didn’t hesitate to uncurl from Ezekiel’s lap and follow Ty. She didn’t look back, couldn’t. Once she was in her right mind, she would explain to Ezekiel that there was no way they were going to be together. They were too different.

Ami took her first easy breath when she saw Vivian’s eyes open. They were half crossed, but they were open. Relief and love bubbled over her, creating a wave of deep emotion she didn’t know how to process. She could cry, but who had time for hormonal drama? When Vivian smiled at her, she had to blink back the tears. Damn. This was not cool.

“Well,” Ami said, needing to escape with her dignity. “Since Kasey is stuck up your ass, and you’re in good hands, I’m going to jet.” She sniffed and made sure not to look Vivian in the eyes again. “Glad you’re awake.” Without another word, she left the hospital room. Her chest constricted so tightly, she could’ve passed out.

“Here.” Ty tossed her a set of keys. Of course her brother would know she didn’t want anyone to see her lose her shit. She gave him a nod and bolted from the hospital. Go figure; they were to Ezekiel’s motorcycle. At least if she cried while she was on the bike, she could blame it on the wind in her eyes. Sometimes being a girl sucked.

Character Interview

Hey guys! What’s up? This is Ami, star of BREAK HER FALL, by JoAnna Grace. Let’s rock this!

What is your name? Do you have a nickname?

Amilynn Blake. I took Vivian’s last name when we left our old Pride. She’s the alpha, so Blake it is.

What is your hair color? Eye color?

Hair color totally depends on the day of the week. I like mixing it up with pink streaks. But my natural color is brown/blonde like my leopard. My eyes change from green, in human form, to the golden yellow of my cat.

How old are you?

You know that’s not a nice question to ask a lady, right? Good thing for you, I’m not always a lady. 24

Where were you born? Where have you lived since then? Where do you currently call home?

I was born in Nevada. Nothing to talk about there. I’ve moved around some and now I call Oregon home. That’s where Vivian met Kasey, the wolf alpha, so I guess were are trying to make this work.

Who are the people you are closest to?

Until recently it was only my Pridemates: Vivian, Melissa, Conall, and my twin brother Tyrone. Since we’ve moved in with the Blackburn Pack, my circle has expanded to include a few wolves- which I’m totally allergic to.

Who is your funniest friend?

Nate. Holy friggin cow, that kid is a riot. He’s fourteen and shamelessly in love with me, even though I’m kinda seeing his older brother, Ezekiel!

What is your biggest fear?

Pass. I don’t do fear. Fear gets you killed.

What is your most treasured possession?

After moving around so much in the last five years, I don’t put much stock into possessions. I’ve learned to live on the go.

What or who is the greatest love of your life?

Shifters, like me, have mates. It’s deeper than human love because our inner animals multiply the intensity. I know who mine is, but admitting it is a lot harder than I expected.

What is your favorite journey?

It’s been a hell of a journey merging with the Blackburn Pack. Whew.

Which living person do you most despise?

Brian. But he won’t be living much longer. You’ll find out why.

What is your greatest regret?

Now there’s a loaded question. It’s like a told Nate and his brother Tom, my past is full of sins. Many of them I wish I could hide.

Which talent would you most like to have?

Please, I have talent coming out the a$$. I don’t need anyone else’s. (she says sarcastically)

What is the quality you most like in a man/woman?

Silence. Naw, I’m kidding. I’m all about a guy with a good sense of humor.

What do you most value in your friends?

Loyalty, hands down. We’ve walked through the fire together and they’ve never flinched at my crazy stunts.

Who is your favorite hero in rel life?

Vivian is my hero. Not only is she my bestie, but she’s faced trials I can’t even imagine and come out stronger on the other side. I want to be like her when I grow up.

Which words or phrases do you most overuse?

I say balls instead of cussing around Nate and Tom. They’ve picked it up, which annoys their father, so it’s pretty funny.

What is your motto?

“Never cage a wild spirit.” I have it tattooed on my side.
