How to keep sane when writing a 100,000 word fantasy.
- Associate with writer friends who understand the odd circumstance in which you work.
- Associate with non-writer friends who don’t understand and therefore require you to exhibit a semblance of sanity. The practice of social skills is good for you.
- Don’t talk aloud to the dragons in your head when you are doing things like chopping celery or grocery shopping.
- Do talk to all your characters while stewing over a new scene you are writing.
- Do not ask the characters’ opinions about any scene in the manuscript.
- If a scene has you stymied, go ahead and talk to the characters involved.
- Eat regular meals in appropriate intervals.
- Don’t drink more than five mugs of coffee or tea in the afternoon.
- Don’t put miniature chocolate (bite-size left over from Halloween or Valentine’s) within reach of your computer.
- Keep in touch with family and friends, force yourself to recall their current joys and sorrows, develop genuine concern for today’s tribulation, either theirs or yours, pray about it, forget it all and go back to work.
