he Breaking of Bonds by Alina Popescu Cover Reveal

The Breaking of Bonds Cover Reveal

Synopsis

A human sacrifice throws vampires of two worlds, trueborn and baseborn, into an escalating conflict. One side pushes for revenge, the other for freedom. The trueborns stubbornly hunt for Anthony and Louis, pushed by Hesrah’s desire to avenge her human best friend, Alexa. The baseborns are divided between rallying with those challenging the rule of Ankhsis and obeying the trueborns.
What emerges from the portal between Earth and Ankhsis in the middle of the turmoil rocking both worlds is more dead than alive. Neither human, nor baseborn, and certainly not trueborn. This new being will either damn them all or be their race’s most powerful weapon. Will they trust it not to destroy them, or will Ankhsis decide putting it down is the only solution?
In the end, who is guilty? Who will pay? Will anyone survive its wrath?

Hesrah was growing impatient; she wanted to return to the portal, so she decided she needed to push them to finally share their information with her.
“What is it that you have discovered that needed my immediate attention?”
Anhubis took out an envelope from the inside pocket of his jacket and threw it on the table. She reached out to it and found a few photos in it. Louis, strapped down to a chair, all bloody and beaten. Good for him!
“What is this?” she asked, looking at Anhubis from under knitted eyebrows.
“One of our baseborn friends – we still have a few of those – followed Anthony after the events in Juliana Park. He managed to send these over before being caught.”
“Do you know where he was?”
“Yes, but they are long gone.”
“Why would Anthony do this to his partner in crime?” she asked, tilting her head.
“God knows,” Anukh stepped in. “Maybe they were never partners. Maybe he found out who Louis really was.”
“Can you find them again? Or do I have to bring an Inner Sanctum squad over here?”
“Don’t you dare!” Anhubis said in a thundering voice, pointing a threatening finger at her. “The Inner Sanctum will not meddle on Earth. I will find them again.”
“Make sure you let me know the moment you do,” Hesrah said, her eyes boring into him.
“Won’t you be too busy guarding the portals, waiting for your precious human friend?”
His mocking smirk, more so than his sarcastic words, got to her and in a blink of an eye her fist raced through the air, connecting to his face. As he fell to the ground, she lunged and got on top of him, her fangs piercing the skin of his neck. Her nostrils flared at the spicy cologne he was wearing and she managed to squeeze a few drops of his blood before Anhubis threw her off of him. The fight would have surely escalated if Anukh wouldn’t have stepped in to stop them.
“Are you both crazy?” he hissed, a deep frown line marring his forehead. “Anhubis, you are the head of the High Council. Surely you can tell how ill-advised being inconsiderate towards humans is. And you, Hesrah! You are a part of the Inner Sanctum and your mother’s daughter. You should both be ashamed.”
When they moved away from each other, Anukh, with a half sad, half disgusted smile, said a hurried good-bye and left the room.
“If you ever talk about her like that, I will kill you with my bare hands,” Hesrah said through clenched teeth. To her, that was not a threat, it was a promise, and she suspected Anhubis knew it, as he nodded quickly and took a step back.

“Hello, I am Hesrah. Nice to meet you.”
Polite and stiff, no facial expression, no smile, no unnecessary movement, only her dark brown eyes showed some life, some slow fire that kept her going.
“Hello, I am Louis and this is Alexa. We will be your hosts during your stay on earth.” Louis smiled and extended his hand, which she shook after a few awkward moments.
“I look forward to it. May I be shown to my room now?” she said with no inflexion in her tone.
It took me a second to react as I was analyzing her outfit…jeans and a plain t-shirt, sport shoes and denim jacket. It seemed completely wrong for her attitude and behavior.
“Sure, I’ll take you to your room,” I eventually said. “It’s right next to mine.”
“Lovely.”
She did not sound like she meant it. She sounded more like cyborgs from a sci-fi movie. She wasn’t as captivating as Anukh or Louis, or even Anthony. She was just formal and…uptight. Oh, brother, I said to myself. This will definitely be tons of fun.
When she entered the room, I finally noticed her backpack. She took some more clothes out of it, all plain and simple. She asked where she could put them and I pointed to the closet.
“What is it?” she asked. “Why are you frowning like that?”
I hadn’t realized I was. I had been warned before that my face and eyes give away what I was struggling to keep from saying but, apparently, I never learned.
“Umm, dunno, you are just not what I expected,” I confessed.
“And what did you expect?” She cocked her head and waited.
“I guess someone similar to Anukh, but more impressive and graceful?”
“Are you asking me?”
“No, just turning it into a question till I figure out how offensive my statement is.” I shrugged.
“You are very blunt, aren’t you?”
It did not sound like a compliment.
“Yeah, maybe. Anyway, I can atone for that by kindly inviting you to use any of my makeup and raid my closet whenever you feel like wearing something less…”
“Less what?” she demanded, raising an eyebrow.
“Less plain.”
“I am on a mission and I have comfortable clothes for it,” she answered, quickly. She was just staring at me and I thought I should put an end to kicking the hornet’s nest.
“I should go now. Catch you later.”

I finally allowed myself to enjoy a refreshing sigh the moment I got on the other side of the door. I also added yet another note to self. Whenever I find myself talking to a deadly creature who can kill me in under five seconds, maybe, just maybe, watching my tongue would be smart.

Please welcome Edge of Hope author Alina Popescu to Diane's Book Blog.

Vampires and I, a lifelong love story

Contrary to popular belief, vampire myths are not that common in Romania. We have our strigoi, who are very similar to zombies, and we have the iele. Vampires, not so much, even though one of the oldest written mentions (12th or 13th century if I remember correctly) is from Russia. Garlic is used to keep strigoi away, especially on St. Andrew’s Night, the local version of Halloween, minus the costumes and the candy.

It’s no surprise I was a teenager when vampires entered my life. First by way of movies – Bram Stoker’s Dracula and, of course, Interview with the Vampire – then by way of books. It happens like that sometimes, the movies make it here before the books are translated. As there was no Amazon at the time, well, there was no way around it.

Needless to say, I got hooked from the start and then devoured every book and movie I could get my hands on. I even used vampires (fictional and those claiming to be real life blood suckers) as research subject at Uni. It was one of the most entertaining assignments ever!

I only started to write fiction in English about 6 or 7 years ago and, you guessed it, I started with a vampire story. The main female character was called Alexa, but her story was very different. It’s safe to say her story changed as mine did, but that tends to happen when you create a character that is so close to who you are. Needless to say, I’ve never done that with another character, although we always put a little piece of ourselves in the personas we create.

If you think writing a trilogy dedicated to vampires has made my passion dwindle, then you are not giving me enough credit. :D I have since started numerous vampire series, I role play a vampire character and write stories with his writing partner, and yes, I still swoon over all vampire themed movies. Did I tell you I’ve already watched Dracula Untold four times?

Granted, vampires are not my only love when it comes to worlds and types of characters. It’s not even my oldest interest, as I’ve read I, Robot by Isaac Asimov sometime in primary school and sci-fi is the longest lasting. Yet my love for vampires is probably the most powerful of them all. I honestly don’t know what I will do when book three of the trilogy is released. It’s hard to say goodbye to a world you adore so much.  Then again, there are so many untold stories!

Excerpt:

He gently helped me get dressed and the more he touched me, the more I felt safe around him. So safe that, for a moment, I forgot how weak I was and, as I completely lacked the needed power to hold myself up, I nearly fell. He caught me and held me tightly in his arms. My internal dam gave in at that precise moment and I really started to cry. Not just tears casually flowing, but anger and pain making their way out through my eyes and mouth.
“It will be all right. Don’t worry,” I heard him whisper, but I had a really hard time believing it.
Exorcising part of what was making my soul and mind rumble helped me regain a bit of my strength so I slowly nodded when he asked if I could walk. I was taking the steps, but he was still supporting most of the process. We went down the stairs, but instead of going through the club, we went outside through another door, some kind of service entrance. There were a few cars parked out back. He got me into the back seat of a Honda Civic. I couldn’t tell what color it was.
Just when he was about to get in the car, Anthony appeared out of nowhere right next to him. I instinctively moved to the farthest point from him I could possibly squeeze into.
“Leaving so soon?” he asked, a touch of anger in his voice.
“Anthony, I can’t really help if you’re never careful enough and leave girls in a state of shock. Be more careful next time,” his friend scolded him.
“What’s the point if you can’t go all wild and enjoy their helplessness? That just diminishes the pleasure,” Anthony said and shrugged. I felt a surge of anger, but fear quickly overpowered it when his gaze met mine.
“The point is she can stay out and play longer, but you have a horde more inside so I get it. Now I need to take her to your place and clean up your mess… again!” I didn’t really know him, but even I could sense the disgust in his tone.
“Fine, have it your way. I won’t be going there for a few days. I need to keep her alive and I am sure you can guess how tempting her blood is. Keep an eye on her. I don’t want sweet Alexa getting any ideas and making me chase her around Europe.”
He turned on his heels and left. Apparently, he had no need to wait for any form of consent.
I finally relaxed when the car drove off and I could feel the distance growing between me and Anthony. The car was very warm and I allowed myself to lie down on the seat and close my eyes.
I woke up as I was being carried inside. I looked up at him and he was smiling warmly. I wanted to smile back, but I could feel that my face wasn’t moving. He placed me on the big sofa in the living room and covered me with a blanket he had brought in from a different room. He stepped into the kitchen and I could hear drawers and cabinets being opened and closed, and then the microwave opened. He came in ten minutes later with a big bowl of steaming liquid.
“Here, drink this. And drink it all,” he ordered.
It was a thick soup that didn’t look or smell half bad so I ventured and took a sip.
“Easy, it’s really hot,” he said, jumping from his armchair.
“Don’t worry,” I said in a barely audible voice. I had always had an abnormal tolerance to hot liquids. When I could finally taste it, I frowned and forced myself to swallow. It had a metallic aftertaste, as if he had mixed iron dust in it.
“God, this is awful!” I complained.
“Just drink it. You’ll thank me in the morning.” He winked and gave my shoulder a little squeeze. He stayed with me, giving me an occasional nudge to make sure I kept drinking. He kept shifting and frowning, even after I showed him the empty bowl.
“What’s wrong?” I asked, annoyed by his overbearing care.
“You’re very weak. You almost passed out three times while drinking this.”
“I didn’t realize. I’m sorry.” I really hadn’t. I didn’t feel anything, neither light-headed nor sleepy, so it came as a surprise.
“Well, you managed to drink it all. Now you’ll get some sleep and you should be fine.” He tried a smile to reassure me, but it wasn’t really working.
“What’s your name?” I asked. I probably was feeling better if I had realized we had never been introduced
“Louis,” he said, taking the bowl from my hands and tucking me in.
“Thank you, Louis. And nice to meet you…sort of.”
“Go to sleep, Alexa. And you’re welcome.”

Author Interview:

I would like to welcome author  Alina Popescu and thanks her for stopping by today to tell us a little about herself and her work.

What is your favorite part of the story, The Edge of Hope?

I loved writing this book, as it was my way to deal with certain events in my own life and Alexa is probably the closest female character to who I am. My absolute favorite bit was actually added later in the editing process, it is a conversation Alexa has with her vampire friend Hesrah. It’s about grabbing onto a sliver of hope and never letting go, no matter what.

How long did it take you to write The Edge of Hope?

I started working on it about three years ago. It took about a year and a half to complete, but I worked on it on and off, it wasn’t a continuous thing. About 50% of it was actually done during my first NaNoWriMo. Thought it would help me create the habit of writing daily and I was right. There were long breaks at first, I’d go for months without writing.

If you were stranded on a desert island which of your characters do you want by your side?

Definitely not any of the vampires, I’d be the only food source! The werewolves in one of my WIPs would do though. They could hunt for me and keep me safe, so one of them. I’d pick one that does not have a mate though, I don’t want to be cruel.

If you could be best friends with one of your characters, who would it be?

Anthony. I know his the baddie of the story, but I can’t help loving him and I happen to think he would have done things differently if he had better friends.

What is your favorite book that you wrote?

The Edge of Hope will always be my absolute favorite. It was my first and nothing will ever compare to that feeling of seeing your first novel live in the online bookstores or of holding your first paperback.

What is your typical day like?

It always starts with coffee! My dog joins me, I have my coffee with milk and sugar and he drinks his milk at that time. I’m either reading or on facebook while I have my coffee. Then it’s a walk outside with him.

My typical day involves a lot of time spent in front of my laptop. I write blog posts, articles, do client work, promote my book, connect with my online friends through social media. I try to write every day on either of my WIPs, but I’m not always successful. I go to the gym as often as I can, usually in the evening, and then there’s another walk with my dog. Before bed, there’s some more reading involved.

How do you overcome writer’s block?

My problem is time, not a real block. I do get stuck sometime, but I developed a habit of working on several stories at once and that is extremely helpful. I usually am able to find some inspiration for at least one of them.

Can you share a little of your current work with us?

I am currently working on book 3 of Bad Blood (book 2 is completed and the third one is about 50% done), a sci-fi story that I’ve been plotting and planning for a while, a werewolf novel and a few romances.

Character Interview:

I would like to thank Alexa from Alina Popescu's Edge of Hope for stopping by today to talk with us.

What is your name? Do you have a nickname?

My name is Alexa. I don’t really have a nickname, well, not anymore. I used to have a few growing up, my very first one being Mushroom. That’s what I call my car now.

What is your hair color? Eye color?

My hair is brown and my eyes are hazel brown.

Where were you born? Where have you lived since then? Where do you currently call home?

I was born in Romania, in a relatively large town called Ploiesti. I’ve lived in Bucharest for the past decade and I’ve recently moved to Amsterdam.

Who are the people you are closest to?

I’m closest to my friend Hesrah and to Louis. Or at least I thought I was close to Louis. Hesrah I am sure about, she’s my closest friend right now. It’s hard to feel at ease with any of my human friends, I can’t really talk to them about what’s going on in my life. Keeping secrets is a bitch.

What or who is the greatest love of your life?

Umm, I’d rather not say who. I always get that wrong, think I’ve found my soul mate and it blows in my face, so I don’t want to jinx it. What? I think life is my greatest love. No matter what happens, I feel this joy of living that some might call delusional.

What is your greatest regret?

Refraining from punching people so many times! I’ve learned over the past months that is quite liberating to slam your fist into people’s faces when they make you angry. Sure, they might not feel it, but you will, and you’ll feel great about it.

What do you most value in your friends?

Not surprisingly, their loyalty and honesty. It’s what I value in all relationships. If you’re honest about everything and if that friendship is important to you, the rest doesn’t matter. Everybody screws up, but if you use your words and tell the truth, the rest should be easy.

Who is your favorite hero of fiction? In real life?

In fiction it’s Lisbeth Salader from the Millennium trilogy. I found her fascinating, extremely smart and one of the strongest female characters ever. In real life? I can’t pick one. I am blessed to know so many amazing persons, vampire and human alike, it’s just too hard to choose.

Which living person do you most admire?

Someone I’ve never met, but I hope I get to. His name is Magnus, he’s the trueborn who reopened the portal to Earth. He went a little crazy at some point, killing vampires for sports…But he seems so interesting to me, a true explorer! Also, he survived the crazy, so I definitely want to meet him!

The Edge of Hope (Bad Blood, #1) by Alina Popescu Review

The Edge of Hope (Bad Blood, #1)The Edge of Hope by Alina Popescu
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Alexa was in Bucharest to write her new vampire novel when asked to be interviewed by Anthony of All Things Vampires. It was great PR for her book before its release. Little did she know meeting Anthony would change her life forever.

I really enjoyed The Edge of Hope. It was a fresh variation in vampire novels.

The character development is well done, especially Alexa, who definitely grew in the novel. She overcomes a bad break up to be thrown into an unknown world of vampires and not be pushed around. There are two sides to Anthony. He is a pretty good actor. Then there is the compassionate vampire Louis, who you are glad Alexa has to lean on.

I liked Alexa. She is strong and admirable. I loved that she is an author and figured out the true evolution of vampires. Anthony is the villain you love to hate – jerk. I really liked Louis, but I’m not sure how I felt about him at the end of the book. I’ll let you know what I think about him after I read book two. I sense that he is hiding something.

There was a definite feeling of evolution in the Edge of Hope. It was almost like reading a distinct story each time Alexa’s life changed. I think the writing style made the story seem all the more convincing. It was well-written and fascinating.

As for the ending - Holy Cliff hanger! Alina please don’t make us wait too long for Bad Blood #2. If you enjoy paranormal stories that evolve with an interesting twist you should enjoy this book.

Character Interview:

Interviewer: Hello, Liana. Thank you for joining us today.
Liana Cantacuzino: Thanks for having me.
I heard you have a message for us.
Yes, I want to assure everyone out there that we are not abandoning our mission. My pandurs and I, we are still here, ready to protect them.
From vampires.
If the need arises, yes.
But not all vampires. Only the bad ones, right?
Indeed. We are changing our mission and are going to function as people’s police for vampires. We already have several training bases set up all over the world, and we’re accepting people on voluntary basis. Everyone has the right to learn how to defend oneself.

Couldn’t this cause more problems than help if everyone learns to fight, to kill?

Basic defense classes are available for everyone.  However, for those who plan to stay in the service, we have in depth psychological testing planned before enlisting. Our goal is not to create mass murderers.

I’m glad we cleared that up. How does the Little Council feel about this globalization?

It’s hard after you’ve lived for generations with one goal in mind, but we need to keep up with the times. The world doesn’t stand still, and if we don’t evolve along with it, it will leave us behind.

But Romania will remain a vampire free country?

Yes, that won’t change.

Won’t it be confusing for the pandurs to face different sets of rules inside the country as opposed to abroad? I know this was a big concern of yours during the New Zealand trip.

We had no choice but to go on and hope for the best at the time, but now we can organize better. We’re actually considering training two separate kinds of troops, one for each territory, though the laws are changing in Romaania too, and soon we probably won’t be able to “kill on sight” anymore. It happens when you give equal rights to all people, humans as well as vampires.

Does it bother you?

Honestly? It’s how I’ve been raised so, yes, there are moments when it still bothers me. But I try to get over it because it’s the right thing to do. The math is simple.  As long as you don’t hurt me, I won’t hurt you.

That sounds reasonable.  And we all know you’re pretty skilled with that stake. Are you still training?

Not really. I mostly practice diplomacy these days. My field days are hopefully over.

Right, you’ve been on a world tour recently. How did that go?

It went rather well, thank you. I’ve met several interesting people in the countries I visited, and they showed interest in what I had to offer once we found a common ground.

The new breed threat.

Well, technically, the new breeds are extinct now, but yes.

Are all of them dead, really?

We certainly hope so. We still have patrols searching the continents, so even if one or two escaped, we’ll get them too.

What happened to Tawny?

What do you mean? I gave an order, and I expected it to be carried out accordingly.

But was it?

I don’t know, I wasn’t there. I can tell you, though, that Herve is alive and well in New Zealand.

You’re changing the subject, but okay. What about Max? Where is he these days?

Around. He’s taking a well deserved vacation, but I trust he will make himself available if we ever need him again.

You sound very confident. Are you sure he can be trusted?

Absolutely. We would have never made it without him, without his people. By forcing us to work, fight, and die together, he proved we could get along.

Won’t the Little Council have your head for making such a public statement?

A little over a year ago, maybe, but not today.

So, we talked about the war, the new breeds, the Little Council, our alliance with the vampires, and the famous Maximilien Hess. What else should we talk about. Where’s Jesse?

I believe he’s in the other room, fighting Max over snacks while waiting to be interviewed.

I take it I should get to it before murder happens?

I wouldn’t worry about it. They get along well, too well at times even.

But you are checking your watch.

We have tickets to the opera. Max doesn’t like to be late.

And we don’t want to upset him, I get it. Very well, I’ll wrap it up then. Is there anything else that you might like to add?

To all the vampires out there … keep your nose clean and don’t upset my people … because I’ll be watching.

Thank you, Liana.

Thank you too.
