Kat Mizera starts out strong with the first novel in the L.A. Phantoms series, POWER PLAY. Harper Barrowman inherits the L.A. Phantoms NHL team from her departed husband, Edward Barrowman. She brings her ex-husband, goalie Gabe DeLugo, over in a trade with the Lauderdale Knights, in hopes of him defending her in the locker room.
We met Harper and Gabe in the Lauderdale Knights series. I love that characters from Kat Mizera other series cross over into this story, specifically the Alaska Blizzard, Las Vegas Sidewinders, Lauderdale Knights and Rock Hard. I enjoyed the aspect of the story where Harper was cleaning house and bringing on new staff from teams in her other series.
Harper faces a lot of challenges in this story. She is the first female NHL owner; her stepsons are trying to contest the will to get ownership of the Phantoms, and she wants to get pregnant. Gabe still loves Harper but feels that dating ex-wife and boss is probably not the smartest idea.
Gabe and Harper agreed that they married too young. They had misunderstandings. They were each other’s first loves that they never got over. Harper loved Edward but not in the same way. I love that Gabe and Harper get a second chance.
POWER PLAY is skillfully written and entertaining. I am looking forward to future books in the L.A. Phantoms series. I voluntarily reviewed an advance reader copy of this book.
