My rating: 4 of 5 stars
Jami Davenport scores with REBOUNDING (Portland Icehawks #1). In this novel, thirty-five-year-old hockey captain Dashel Bates was traded from the Chicago Tigers in the expansion draft to the Portland Icehawks. Like NHL goalie Marc-Andre Fleury, Dash found out he was traded on social media and not by his team or agent: not a cool move after so many years of loyal service. To top things off, his wife doesn’t want to go with him and admits to having an affair with his line mate on the Tigers. Needless to say, Dash has had better days. Then he meets the cute barista at the team coffee shop, and his days seem to get brighter.
Everly Barlowes family owns the Icehawks. Not having luck with a career, she feels like the family screw up. She is given an ultimatum: successfully run the team coffee shop for six months or lose her trust fund. Oh and no dating any of the players. Too bad she is so attracted to Dash, but they could just be friends, right…
I like Dash and Everly. Both characters are depressed, and they end up being the light in each other’s lives. They become faithful friends and have amazing chemistry. They go through a lot and overcome many obstacles.
I appreciated that the story was realistic in that expansion teams typically struggle. To not be protected by your team would be a hit to anyone’s ego. REBOUNDING is an excellent start to the Portland Icehawks series. I am looking forward to Grady’s story next. I voluntarily reviewed an advance reader copy of this book.
