Brenda Rothert and Kat Mizera light the lamp with HARD FALL (St. Louis Mavericks #1). In this story, St. Louis Mavericks were having an amazing year until team Captain Ben Whitmer and his wife Lauren dies in a car crash. They left their kids to their godparents, Ben’s lifelong friend and teammate Weston (Wes) Kirby and Lauren’s best friend Hadley Ellis. Unfortunately, Wes and Lauren get along like oil and vinegar. They need to learn to set their differences aside to make sure that the kids come first. Especially since the children’s grandparents want to contest the will.
HARD FALL is an amazing start to the St. Louis Mavericks series. The characters had a lot of depth. The authors did a great job portraying all the emotions throughout the story: everything from the tension between Wes and Hadley through to the grieving process and becoming parents. Wes and Hadley go from being enemies that must tolerate each other due to having common best friends to parents who need to show a united front. It helps that they have always been attracted to each other.
I love the letters that Ben and Lauren left behind. They were tear-jerkers, except for the last letter which was classic and had me smiling. HARD FALL is a heartfelt and amazing novel. I cannot wait to read book two, HARD LIMIT to see what Brenda Rothert and Kat Mizera come up with next together. I have always been a fan of the two authors. The duo makes a great team. I voluntarily reviewed an advance reader copy of this book.
