Coast To Coast: Vancouver Vice Hockey 5 by Melanie Ting
My rating: 4 of 5 stars
Melanie Ting does an excellent job depicting cultural difference in COAST TO COAST. Lily Larson is a Canadian studying abroad in Sweden. Even though her father is from is from Sweden, and she has family living there, there are diversities that she is not accustomed to. Especially when it comes to the brooding goalie, Gabriel Olsson. However, Gabriel has some personal issues that also complicate matters.
Lily is a likable character. Her father is a famous hockey player. She looks forward to being anonymous in Sweden where people do not know who her father is. Understandably, she is tiered of people befriending her to get to him. She is the kind of person you would want to be friends with because she is personable, sweet, and outgoing.
Gabriel is hard to get to know. He is sort of Lily’s opposite. He keeps to himself. He has family issues that caused him to give up being in a prominent hockey league, playing college hockey instead. He is a selfless and has had difficult issues to face. Gabriel is an interesting character. At first, I didn’t know what to make of him, but the more I learned about him and understood him, the more I liked him.
I enjoyed the cultural aspect of the story. My parents were both born in Europe, so I could relate to some of the situations. I think this story is a good reminder that people act differently for various reasons. You shouldn’t assume to know what someone else is thinking or going through.
I enjoyed the plot. There were interesting obstacles and challenges. I like how the story ended.
COAST TO COAST is a wonderful addition to the Vancouver Vice series. It could be read as stand-alone, but previous characters do make an appearance in this story. I voluntarily reviewed an advance reader copy of this book.
