Reckless King by Maya Hughes
My rating: 5 of 5 stars
Maya Hughes scores with RECKLESS KING. College hockey player, Heath Taylor, plans on finishing out the season, graduating, and going to the NHL. He didn’t plan on becoming involved with Kara Ellis. She’s perfect for him. Unfortunately, she ends up being assigned as his TA. It’s too risky for either of them to continue to pursue a relationship together; they could lose everything.
I loved RECKLESS KING. Heath is a wonderful character. He had an abusive father who is in prison. He does not want to be anything like him and occasionally struggles with his temper. He adores his mother and appreciates what she went through to give them a better life. He is a good-looking guy who girls throw themselves at. He wants a relationship that is more challenging and meaningful then that. I respect that his education is important to him. He could have gone pro early but chose to finish college and get a degree in a subject that was important for him.
Kara is the perfect match for Heath. Like Heath, she had a difficult childhood because of a parent. Her mother was an alcoholic. She was fortunate enough to end up with a good foster family that she adores. She is hard working; driven to get a fellowship to pay for her PhD. The two relate to each other in a way no one else can. They value each other and do not want to jeopardize the other's future.
I enjoyed the plot. RECKLESS KING was heartfelt and believable. The characters had multiple struggles, including having to deal with their past. My heart broke for some of the things they had to endure. This is a story that has you feeling just about every emotion. The story was skillfully executed and flowed well. This is the first book that I have read by Maya Hughes. I enjoyed her writing-style. I plan to continue reading the Kings of Rittenhouse series. I voluntarily reviewed an advance reader copy of this book.
