Character Interview

Please welcome Cassie Martin from April Aasheim’s The Good Girl’s Guide to Being a Demon to Diane’s Book Blog.

What is your full name? Do you have a nickname?

Cassidy Anne Martin. My mother teased me that I was almost Raggedy Anne Martin. Guess I dodged a bullet. All my friends call me Cassie though. Only my mother called me Cassidy.

How old are you?

I’m exactly twenty-four today. But I don’t celebrate birthdays anymore. Bad things happen on birthdays.

Where were you born? Where have you lived since then? Where do you currently call home?

I was born and raised in Elliot, Indiana. We spent a lot of time as a kid in Woodland Creek. That’s where our family went to vacation and where my mom and dad first met. Its probably also where my dad learned of my mother’s ‘secret.’ I currently live in Phoenix, AZ. After I lost my folks, there didn’t seem to be much point in staying back home.

What is in your refrigerator right now? On your bedroom floor? On your nightstand?

I live in a studio apartment and space is limited. I have a mini-fridge. Its filled with Mountain Dew and ketchup. On my nightstand there’s a bottle of Nyquil, a Wallflowers CD, and a picture of my family. Oh, and a photo of Josh.

What is your biggest fear?

Feeling like I’m not in control of things. As long as everything is scheduled and thought out, I feel safe. Although that doesn’t allow me much time for adventure.

What is your most treasured possession?

My most treasured possession would be the book that was delivered to me just today. The letter attached says its from my mother, but she’s been dead nearly two decades now. Still, if it really is from her, it would be the most valuable thing I own.

What or who is the greatest love of your life?

That would be Josh Tucker. He was my brother’s best friend and lived down the road from us in Elliot, Indiana. When I was a kid he saved me from drowning and I’ve had a crush on him ever since. But now, things have moved beyond the crush-stage. I’m in love.

What is your greatest regret?

My greatest regret is not telling my family I loved them more. You think you have more time, but we don’t know. Life is too uncertain.

Which talent would you most like to have?

I’d love to go back in time and set things right. But who knows? I may just make things worse.

As for talents, well, I seem to be developing some real ones. I see…things…at night. Creepy, crawlie things that no one else can see. And just today I seemingly passed through objects without touching them. Not being able to control these abilities is scaring the hell out of me, literally. As I also seem to be growing horns.

What will you do next?

I guess I’m on this journey, like it or not. Once I figure out how to read my mother’s book, I’m sure I will find the answers I’m looking for. And maybe I’ll get a little help from Josh Tucker too, if he’s brave enough to stick around.
