“They have guns,” Paloma’s voice quivers. “Really big ones.”
That’s my girl.
“They have guns,” Paloma’s voice quivers. “Really big ones.”
“Do you have a clear shot?” another voice asks.
“No, the girl is in the way.”
Paloma’s breath catches and I move her behind me, using my
body as a shield, ready to shift and fly us out of here.
“What the fuck is going on?” I shout, demanding answers. The
beast inside stirs and anger washes over me. My other self desperately wants to
come out.
“Take the shot.”
“I could miss. It could hit her.”
“If you hit her, all is lost. You do remember our orders,
don’t you?”
“Someone better fucking explain now or I’m going to rip out
all of your jugulars,” I warn. And after sensing Paloma’s fear, I tell her
softly, “Don’t worry love, everything is OK. I got this. Trust me?”
She nods but can’t find her voice to reply. Tears are
flowing down her cheeks. I place a quick kiss on top of her head.
“It’s OK,” I soothe.
“I got him!”
A heavy metal netting slams over me before I can shift. I
can barely move, can do nothing but watch as Paloma is ripped away from me, screaming,
kicking and fighting. She’s making them work to contain her.
