Imprisoned Without Chains
Hi all! Thank you so
much for hosting me today and letting me talk about Enslaved by Fear, the
seventh book in the Inherited Damnation series.
It’s the second to last book in the series, and if you haven’t had a
chance to check it out, the first book, Cursed to Kill is available free! (Amazon Cursed to Kill)
A lot of us take our freedom for granted. Sure, we all complain now and then, for
various reasons, about being imprisoned.
And we have all heard truths about the real life of a true convict, locked away in a jail
cell. But what if you weren’t in a cell,
per se? What if you weren’t a true
criminal? What if a regular jail cell
couldn’t hold you? And worse…what if
your very family instituted your imprisonment?
As I wrote Brigid, I found a sympathy for her that I wasn’t
entirely expecting. She absolutely
deserves her imprisonment, but how would she
see it became the driving question. We
all look out our windows now and then (if you’re like me, you rarely stop to look). The deeper I dug, the more I discovered about
her. Yet it was this passage that really
connected me with her:
Brigid watched the
tall trees sway in the breeze, feeling that gentle air as if she stood amongst
the whispering branches. She was part of the forest, of the sky, of the river
that ran through the gangly saplings. She was a Celt, damn it. Born to the
freedom of the wild, a part of nature as much as it was a part of her. And each
day spent behind these stone walls shriveled portions of her soul.
Even now, I re-read that, and it stirs something inside
me. I can’t imagine being that free and then suddenly confined. I can, however, imagine the lengths I would
go to in order to escape. I’d lie, I’d
antagonize, I’d trick – all devices Brigid employs. Her internal struggle with her confinement
evokes images of the ancient Celts, the harsh reality of life those people
led. Both positive and negative images. And the more I think about her, the more I
think about the real Celts who lived free as the wind only to fall beneath the
mighty hand of Rome. Somedays I wish our
lives were more like that. We’re all
chained now, in some way, I do think. To
our jobs, our mortgages, our hobbies even – you name it. Stop and consider for a moment, if you
would…what would total freedom be? I
certainly wouldn’t miss the electric bill!
(Although… that fancy thing called heat in the winter –yeah, not giving
that up!)
So tell me, if you would – what would freedom be for

lighter, what lengths would you go to to escape being confined against your
