The
Neutral Road
If
you’ve talked to me much, you’ll realize I came from a gamer background. I would spend hours every weekend rolling the
dice with D&D, or playing online RPGs and MUDs, and I currently have an
insane collection of Magic the Gathering cards that might make some folks
cry. Laugh.
I
discovered early on that it was far too easy to play either the character
alignment of “lawful good, or chaotic evil.”
Far more challenging – and far more fun! – is to play a true neutral. You get away with a whole heck of a lot of
things you couldn’t otherwise!
Case in point: I was playing a true neutral Druid in one bout of D&D. My party included two young, relatively unskilled wizards…one of whom happened to be my real, recent, ex boyfriend. And I was pretty sore about the state of our breakup. Well, we’re in a forest, the most heavenly place for a Druid, when we encounter cobwebs. Everybody who games knows that cobwebs = rapidly approaching spiders that haven’t eaten in decades. The two foolish young wizards decided to combat the webs with a fireball, thus setting the entire forest on fire.

And
one true neutral Druid suddenly had the grounds to attack her own party (thus
extracting a little passive aggressive revenge on one said ex-boyfriend) and caused
his character to fall over nearly dead, all in the name of “environmental
protection”.
Unfortunately
– or fortunately, depending on how you look at it, because it certainly was
entertaining for those not “in the know” – that didn’t free me of the bitterness
of breakup. My ex and I would square off
similarily for many rounds over the next couple of years. But despite the underlying tension, it was
always sweet revenge when the dice rolled favorably for me, and my TN Druids
ended up significantly more powerful than his preferred chaotic good wizards,
who never seemed to have the mental capacity to recall their names.
How
does this relate to why I’m here today?
Well, as I’ve grown older, the time to game is rare. However, I found a way to feed that true
neutral nature into my writing, and had a blast using that alignment when it
came to Daire, the hero in Fated for Sacrifice.
He walks the middle ground, never quite taking a side, looking to
maintain the balance of light and dark.
And then along comes Reese, who challenges every ethic he possesses, and
ultimately, pushes him a bit too far.
Which way he bends, I’ll let you discover. But I will say that, just like my ex, he
finds a very fitting end. And if you
look close enough, you just might see a bit of mirroring of that fated wizard
vs. druid fight!
So,
tell me, have you gamed? Do you
currently? What’s your favored
character, and why?
