The
Charm of Snow
Hi! Thanks for having me here today. It’s almost May, and I want to talk about
snow!
Let’s
make this clear – I despise winter. I
can’t stand the snow. I abhor being
cold, and I’m always cold in
winter. My furnace runs at 75, and going
outdoors is an exercise in torture. I
bundle up when it hits fifty. If my
children pelt me with a snowball, I squeal like I’ve lost my hand. And no, I’m not from the south, I live where
we have four true seasons and ice is prevalent the first part of every year.
But! As an author, I’ve come to accept there’s a
certain romanticism about snow. And I’ve
learned that in winter tales, it can certainly be entertaining, if it doesn’t
effect a more romantic end to an evening.
And I’ll grant, the darn wet sticky cold stuff is certainly pretty to
look at. Though I’m much more inclined
to be charmed by the picture of a toasty cabin in a snow-covered setting.
Being
a diligent, rules-following author, I strive to challenge myself. And Fated for Sacrifice’s opening is a true
reflection of that challenge. My heroine
starts out camping, in winter.
(Eeegads! – Hear me run screaming!)
Well,
suffice to say, it doesn’t go so well, and she takes refuge in a cabin. (So much for those challenges—good
riddance!) When the hero discovers her,
I stepped back into the comfort zone with a charming little cabin setting and a
glowing fire. Those opening scenes are
probably my favorite in Fated for Sacrifice.
In my mind’s eye, I see a painting I could step into. Have you seen the old Macy’s displays in the
window at the holidays? The animated
scenes that pull us in and make us “ooh” and “ahh” – why does this only happen
when it’s cold outside, not for say, the 4th of July? That charm is
what I wanted to create as Daire looks in on Reese. A magic, totally unique and separete from the
magic that lives in his blood. Something
that is more powerful than he.
So
I guess there’s a use for snow after all.
I suppose I should be thankful that I have to live through snow, otherwise
I wouldn’t deeply understand the heaven of leaving
it for a warm cabin. What about you? Are you the sit before the fire with cocoa
type, or the type to go out and make snowmen?
Please, if you are the latter, tell me how in the world you keep your
darn toes from freezing off!
~Claire
