Excerpt
"It was
several minutes before Sarah realized she wasn’t dreaming. The tall guy in her
room, the creepy guy on the stairs, all of it had been real. After about five
miles of telling herself to wake up, then looking at the tall guy who was
driving, then pinching herself, then telling herself to wake up again, then
looking at the tall guy some more, reality and the promise of a full-fledged
panic attack set in.
“I swear, if you let me go, I won’t tell
anyone, okay?” Sarah finally found her voice. She had a moment where she
thought that maybe this was a dream again, judging by the way the driver of the
car looked. He was dark and mysterious, chiseled from head to toe—she should
know, she all but crawled into him when they were running away from that other
guy. She couldn’t make out much in the dark of the truck’s cab, but even in the
faint light of the street lamps, something about this guy made her feel
different. Maybe it was his voice—that deep, gravelly, slightly British voice.
Maybe it was the smell that came off him, that man-mixed-with-leather-and-aftershave
smell.
“Who are you?” Her damned voice box
rebelled against her and her question came out in a whisper.
He was focused on the road, his eyes never
leaving it as he maneuvered the giant diesel truck in and out of the one a.m.
traffic. “I’ll explain everything when we get to where we are going. In the
meantime, just sit back and try to relax, okay?”
“Relax? Okay, yeah. I was taken out of my
bed in the middle of the night by some guy I don’t even know, and then I was
chased up the stairwell by a Sherman tank of a drag queen, and you tell me to
relax? Yeah right, pal! Listen, seriously, whatever ransom you’re asking for, I
can pay it. Just bring me to an ATM, and you can have whatever you want, okay?
Just let me go.”
“It’s not that simple, Dr. Bridgeman.”
“The hell it’s not. Look, just let me out,
and anything you want, it’s yours. Cross my heart, I won’t tell a soul you took
me.” She made a little crisscross motion over her heart.
“Like I said, Dr. Bridgeman, it’s not that
simple. I don’t need your money. I need you to do a job for me. That Sherman
tank drag queen apparently wants you to do the same job. I think, circumstances
being what they are, you might want to consider working for me.”
“Work, my ass.” Sarah mumbled to herself.
“Who the hell are you, anyway? And what job could I possibly do for you? I’m a
medical researcher, you dickhead.”
He didn’t bother looking at her. He took in
a deep breath and let out a long sigh.
“My name is Taris. I’m an
eight-hundred-year-old vampire, and I need you to use your medical research to
help me stop the slow yet brutal extinction of a race of people who really do
exist but are made into horror movie villains and romance novel heroes.”
When he was met
with silence, he glanced over to see her passed out cold in the seat.
“I knew it wouldn’t work.”
Author Bio
A.D. Marrow is a registered
Sapiophile, a proud geek since before geek was chic, and believes that everyone
deserves a happily ever after.
She lives in the foothills of North
Carolina with her ridiculously hot and amazingly supportive husband, three kids
that rock so hard there should be a national holiday for their awesomeness, two
really stupid dogs and a plethora of Post-it notes with book ideas to last her
until she’s 90.
Her childhood dream is realized in
the fact that YOU have cause to read her bio. She hopes that one day, it lends
her enough credibility to live out her second dream, which is to write an
episode of Doctor Who.
Her personal mantra echoes that of
Morticia Addams: “Normal is an illusion. What is normal for the spider is chaos
for the fly.”

Please welcome Chaos and Moonlight author A.D. Marrow to Diane’s Book Blog.
How long did it take
you to write Chaos and Moonlight?
Chaos and Moonlight was a book fifteen years in the making. Fifteen!
That’s older than my kids. I worked on it in bits and pieces for a good bit,
jotting down scenes in notebooks that I stashed away at work. I eventually put
everything into a Word document and once it was finished, screwed up the
intestinal fortitude to send it to a publisher. The rest is history.
If you were stranded
on a desert island which of your characters do you want by your side?
This is actually a crazy
hard question! My first inclination would be to say Taris, but he’s already
helped me weather a pretty big storm so I might give him a pass on that one. My
second choice would be Achan because I would always be entertained, but if I’m
completely honest, I would want Bane there with me. He has survivor running
through his DNA.
Who is your favorite
author and what is it that really strikes you about their work?
My favorite author of all
time is William Shakespeare. I know that sounds incredibly lofty but I promise,
it’s a genuine love. I read Hamlet
for the first time when I was fourteen and I knew he was something special,
even if I couldn’t quite understand everything that he was saying yet. As far
as the romance genre, I will always and forever be a Jude Deveraux fan-girl. I
read A Knight in Shining Armor not
long after I discovered Shakespeare and I fell head-over-heels. I think Deveraux
was and is always so honest with her characters and their emotions. I’ve never
read a book of hers after which I wasn’t smiling.
What is your typical
day
like?
Insane. Is that too
simple, haha? I wake up fairly early. I’m usually out of bed by 5. I make
coffee, make sure my super sexy Neanderthal husband is ready for work, fix
lunches, and get everyone out of the door. Once I’m alone in the house, I will
check my email, then work out and shower. After that, I go with the muse. I desperately
wish sometimes that I was a meticulous plotter but I’m a hopeless member of the
Pants camp. I do have a notebook with scene ideas that I refer to but as to
what happens when, it’s all in the moment.
Which I do not recommend
anyone else do, by the way. I’m a slacker.
Can you share a little
of your current work with us?
I am currently working on
book 2 in The Order of The Nines series, called Mayhem Sonata. I can’t really say too much about the book, as it
hinges on a MAJOR plot twist in book
one, but I will say that it’s been one hell of a ride to write.
What book are you
reading now?
I am currently re-reading Pleasure Unbound by Larissa Ione because
she is, to me, the reigning Queen of PNR. One of the things that boosted my
confidence and gave me the greenlight that it was okay to have violence mix
with romance was her Demonica series.
I fangirl so very hard over her.
What do you prefer
paperback, hardcover, or ebooks?
All of the above. I don’t
agree that print is dead, nor do I agree that e-books are overrated. I believe
that the important thing is THAT people read, not HOW they read it. Does that
make sense?
Although, I’ve
systematically replaced my Deveraux print collection multiple times.
Do you have anything
specific that you want to say to your readers?
To say thank you would be far too
simple. I tend to worry a good bit. I’m one of those authors that agonize over
every word. Even now that the book is out, I still feel like I could have done
better. My readers are my friends. They are my family. I have received some of
the most amazing message and emails since this journey began and it’s just
getting started. That people are willing to ride on this train with me
continues to astound and amaze me and I can honestly say, I would not have the
courage to write were it not for the love of readers. When I get messages,
saying that my work makes a former domestic violence victim want to not only
survive, but thrive? That gives me all the success I could ever hope for. I
love my readers, truly. That they seem to love me back is just icing on an
already amazingly decadent cake.
