I would like to welcome Tina Smith author of the Wolf Sirens Series to Diane's Book Blog.
Can you share a little of your current work with us?
We discover the paranormal world in Shade along with the main character, sixteen year old Lila Crain. She has been in and out of trouble and her mother has just moved Lila to her home town in the country as punishment.
Lila is a lonely and somewhat spoilt teenager and soon she is introduced to a world of cursed wolves, which she ultimately wants to join.
Wolf Sirens is a passionate tale full of angst, frenemies, first love and a town shrouded in myth – set in a place where you don’t go out after dark.
What inspired you to write your first book?
I like strong female protagonists and reality. My heart lies in fantasy, I like dark themes. Paranormal fit my style.
I love fantasy and I enjoy the edge of realism paranormal introduces to the genre.
I thought I had a story to tell and I wrote what I wanted to read. I think understanding the demographic that you are writing for is important. I wrote what I wanted to read – a story with a strong female protagonist who develops and grows as a character throughout her journey. Lila is stubborn, determined and vulnerable. She unleashes a strength within that she didn’t know she had as the story unfolds.
I have been told that I have taken the genre to a new level. I injected a lot of myself into the pages. I explored deep themes such as jealousy, desire, bullying and everything that goes along with coming of age stories.
Tell us about yourself?
I live in Adelaide Australia, I’m a student Naturopath and Herbalist, I have completed my exams and just have to complete less than 100 hours of clinical experience – I am almost there! I work as a Health and Wellness Consultant by day, in a health store, bagging dried goods and serving customers.
I’m a mother and I have cavalier cross named Billy, who is the best company, especially when I am in the writing cave.
How long did it take you to write Wolf Sirens?
I have studied for over eight years. During that time I have had a college closure and at one point in time I couldn’t afford to continue to study. So there have been plenty of ups and downs but I have soldiered on, I don’t give up easily. At those tough times I sat at my laptop with nothing to lose and wrote Wolf Sirens, I chipped away at it for a couple of years and when I thought it might be ready I had a close friend read it. She confirmed that I wasn’t wasting my time and from then on I polished the rough draft again and again until I had something great. It was a lot of work and an enormous learning curve.
Now my heart lies more with telling the Wolf Sirens series than anything else. Writing has consumed more and more of me and continues to do so with each passing day…
If you were stranded on a desert island which of your characters do you want by your side?
Cres, for sure. She really emerges as one of the strongest and most liked characters from book #1. In book #2, Fever, the reader learns more about her as she helps Lila discover more about her skills in the underworld. I enjoy book #2 the most because their relationship is really solidified as friends, even though Cres may or may not be an enemy herself. I love all the scenes about them hunting in the mountains and Cresida’s quirks make her interesting to write about.
Do you have anything specific that you want to say to your readers?
This year I plan to publish two anthologies of paranormal stories with nine other female authors. Night Life, and a New Adult genre short story collection called Lacing Shadows.
I will release the fifth book in my Wolf Sirens series in October 2014 and I have plans for a sixth book in the series due for release next year.
