Feature & Follow #4: Characters & Plot vs. Writing

Feature & Follow is a blog hop hosted by Parajunkee and Alison Can Read, each of whom feature a chosen blog for the week. It is a great way to meet new bloggers, make friends, and get exposure for your own blog.

This weeks Question:

How important is good writing to you? In an ideal world, a book would be beautifully written AND have great character development, plot, etc. But in the real world, which do you prefer: (1) Great characters and plot with lousy writing or (2) Middling character development and plot but gorgeous writing

This is a hard question.  I want to say that the writing effects how I feel about the characters and plot.  If the writing is bad, I just can't get into everything else.

Whenever I pick up a book by one of my favorite authors (link to favorite author list), I usually feel like I'm taking in a breath of fresh air and am astounded by how well done the writing is.  However, those authors also produce great characters and plot.

That being said, when it comes down to it, if I love a book, it's usually because of how invested I felt in the characters.  So I guess I'm going to pick character and plot.

  1. This is such a hard question! Isn't it? After reading a bunch of blogs participating in this hop today, I think I might want to change my answer. :) I went with number 2--good writing but mediocre character development. However, usually the reason I love a series is not the writing as much as the character and what's happening to him or her! I'm following you on bloglovin'! Nice to "meet" you. :)

  3. Yeah, this question is hard, because it's often quite hard to separate the two of them isn't it XD What it came down to me is which one will cause me to put a book down first.

Following via BlogLovin' now~ (Cause I had somehow forgotten to do it last time, whoops. Thanks for your follow from last week and your comment this).

  4. Everything in a strong story is so tied together. I love books that I don't think are stellarly written and I love books that are. There's maybe an X Factor that makes me keep reading that I don't have a word or words for yet.
