Pieces by T. Aleo
My rating: 5 of 5 stars
I love to read sports romances and PNR/Urban Fantasy. So when I found out that Toni Aleo, one of my favorite hockey romance authors, was going to write her first PNR, I was thrilled. I was also not disappointed. Pieces had a different feel than her other books, but it was just as spectacular as her previous work.
The story takes place in contemporary New York. There is a secret supernatural community called the Works that is made up of five species: vampires, wolves, shifters, witches, and the patchworks. The Works and Patchworks are both headed by our heroine, Rebecca von Stein’s, father, William von Stein. William’s claim to fame was discovering immortality. Rebecca is the youngest of four children and the only daughter. To say she is overprotected and smothered is an understatement. My heart went out to poor Rebecca whose life is essentially being part of a continual and painful science experiment. To top things off, she becomes a target to those opposed to her father.
The plot was amazing. I like that the main character is a descendent of Doctor Frankenstein. That was a clever take that I have never come across before in a paranormal novel. The story is full of supernatural politics and conspiracy. There are numerous unexpected twists that kept me mesmerized.
T. Aleo does an incredible job with her character development. I love Rebecca. She just wants to be normal, and her life is anything but that. She is compassionate and clever. I enjoyed Killian’s character. He is mysterious and brave. I cannot wait to see how the two progress in the next book.
I read a lot. Sometimes I feel like I'm rereading the same thing. Pieces felt refreshing and new. So if you enjoy paranormal/urban fantasy, and are looking for something different, go no further. You will definitely want to check out this book. I am highly anticipating book two.
