K. C. Finn Spotlight & Interview

The Atomic Circus (Caecilius Rex #1)

A story is never a good story unless it starts with a murder. The more unusual the murder, the better the story, generally speaking. Meet Caecilius (KAI-KILL-EE-USS) Rex, a young detective in the not-too-distant future, a smog-filled post apocalyptic world riddled with crime and conspiracy. When a new case quite literally falls at Rex's feet, he teams up with his neighbour and associate Kendra Nai, an ex-army sergeant recently dismissed, to investigate. Little do they know that the events of The Atomic Circus will be the first step to solving the case of a lifetime.

Counterclockwise (Caecilius Rex #2)

Following the events of The Atomic Circus, Detective Caecilius Rex returns with a whole new mystery to solve. A series of stranglings spark a new intrigue for the young detective that is fraught with danger, along with an unlikely alliance and a startling discovery that will turn Rex’s world upside down. Continue the mysterious journey with the second volume in the Caecilius Rex saga

The Secret Star

In London, 1969, Jeffrey Mercier is just an ageing department store clerk with a long buried secret and a distant memory of a lost love, but when he is suddenly shanghaied by a woman who claims that she can travel in time, his dismal days in menswear are finally cut short. Jeff steps out of his timeline and into a whole new world of possibility and adventure, only to find that he is once again the automaton employee of yet another large corporation: The Time Agency. It has become his duty to protect the people of the future from the threats of their past.

Under the guidance of the struggling captain Marie-Elizabeth Giraud, Jeff learns that he has more in common with his fellow time traveller than he knows. As the adventurers exchange their tales of life and romance in times gone by, their popularity slowly grows in the media-mad atmosphere of the 27th century and Jeff discovers more about his past than he ever thought possible. But all is not well in the timeline, and these intrepid time agents are about to find themselves at the centre of a disaster that could destroy the universe, perhaps even time itself.

About the Author:

Born in South Wales to Raymond and Jennifer Finn, Kimberley Charlotte Elisabeth Finn (known to readers as K.C., otherwise it'd be too much of a mouthful) was one of those corny little kids who always wanted to be a writer. She was also incredibly stubborn, and so has finally achieved that dream in 2013 with the release of her first two novellas in the four-part Caecilius Rex saga.

As a sufferer with the medical condition M.E./C.F.S., Kim works part time as a private tutor and a teacher of creative writing, devoting the remainder of her time to writing novels and studying for an MA in Education and Linguistics.

Interview

Please welcome author K. C. Finn who has stopped by to answer some questions and share some details about her books.

What is your favourite part of the Caecilius Rex series?

Hmm. So far I think I most enjoyed writing the scene in book 2, Counterclockwise, where Redd, Cae and Kendra are trapped in the underground tunnels. I really enjoyed the humour, suspense and tension I could craft into those moments, plus I loved imagining the grimy spaces and the flickering lights – creepy!

In the future of the series I think I am about to write up one of my favourite moments ever actually at the end of book 3, The Face, a very simple scene involving a conversation between Redd and Cae. But the information you receive from it as a reader will be anything but simple!

If you were stranded on a desert island, which one of your characters do you want by your side?

If I were going to be practical I’d say Kendra because she knows about survival and resourcefulness. She’d help me to get through it! But of course I’m not going to be practical! It’s got to be Redd Richmond hands down, because of the comic relief he’d provide, and also because you’d spend so much time looking after him that you wouldn’t have time to worry about being stuck on the island! Plus he’s handsome devil, and that never hurts ;)

What is your typical day like?

Well I am a private tutor, so for some portion of each day I will usually be out teaching, but I can work around that to fit in most other things that I have to do. I usually spend my mornings catching up with things that have happened overnight online, as being in the UK I miss a lot of the US action in the book world due to time zones. From lunchtime onwards I’ll get to writing if there are no distractions at home (namely friends and family). I’ll also spend some time working on my Indie Book radio show Stark Raven Mad, editing, interviewing over Skype and arranging schedules with people. Unfortunately at the moment there have been too many distractions at home during the daytime for me to write, so all the work on Caecilius Rex Book 3 is being done after midnight!

Can you share a little of your current work, your new fantasy novel, The Book of Shade, which is coming out at Christmas?

Well I won’t be giving you a sneak peek right now, because very soon I’ll be launching a new Facebook page for TBoS fans to get sneak previews and exclusive info direct from me, including the blurb and a fabulous cover reveal later in the autumn from the amazing artist S.R. Esprit.

But for now I can tell you that The Book of Shade is a new adult fantasy centering around a young woman attending university for the first time in what she thinks is a fairly quiet town. She makes friends, checks out the cute guys, signs up for a few extra-curricular clubs, all the things you might expect a bright and bubbly Brit girl to do, but of course it wouldn’t be an urban fantasy tale if something magical wasn’t waiting just around the corner. You can expect all the thrills of old Victoriana and the dark carnival spirit as you join our young heroine on her unavoidable path to discovering the ways of the Shadepeople. So don’t miss out this Christmas!

What book are you reading right now?

In the mainstream world I am about three hours into listening to the amazing audiobook of Beautiful Creatures. I have seen the movie and thought it was great, but now having heard so much of this story already I can see why the book fans were furious at all the good stuff they’ve left out! It’s a truly fantastic story made all the better by the superb narrator that I’m hearing it from, plus all the music and creepy sound effects!

In the Indie world I am about to start the steampunk escapade Steel Lily by Megan Curd, which I am very excited about. I had the pleasure of interviewing Megan last week and recording for my radio show Stark Raven Mad, and she got me so excited about her new series that I can’t wait to jump into the amazing world that she’s created.

Thanks Kimberley for stopping by.  I'm looking forward to reading  The Book of Shade when it comes out this Christmas!
