Scent of Valor by Annie Nicholas
My rating: 4 of 5 stars
Kele has been climbing up in the Payami pack status. Her parents arrange a mating between her and a hunter from another pack, but her heart belongs to omega, Peder, of the Apisi. Their lives dramatically change when at Kele’s mating ceremony, they are captured and enslaved by vampires.
I really enjoyed the concept of this story. The setting is a parallel universe of Earth equivalent to the time when Europe settled the new world but with vampires and shifters. The vampires enslave shifters and consider them a lesser species. It was a clever view that I found interesting.
Kele was a worthy heroine. She becomes a strong and wise alpha throughout the story. I like that she refuses to kill others just to get ahead, feeling that in the long run it will hurt the pack.
I loved watching Peter evolve throughout the story. He changes from an omega into a formidable alpha. He is a natural leader who in a time of distress others are willing to follow. He truly loves Kele and will do anything to keep her safe.
Scent of Valor is a creative and fast paced story. It is well-written and thought provoking. I never read the first book in the series and am now interesting in back tracking to find out what happened. I’m also interested in what will happen with some of the other characters in the story in future books.
