Book Description:

This is a prequel to Haven. These events occur three months before Haven starts

Clothed in darkness and power, Jonas watches Carina from the periphery of her life. With all that he is, he secretly protects his young charge from harm. Only three months remain in the twelve-year prohibition forbidding contact with his little warrior when he fails.

Abducted from her dance club, Carina suffers a vicious attack by a newly-turned vampire. Jonas’s retribution for the lowly spawn’s code violation is swift and brutal, and merely the beginning of his vengeance. Fineas, the uninitiated newling’s maker, has committed the greater offense. And Jonas intends to make him suffer.

I am The Executioner, the slayer, the ruthless hand of justice. Code Breakers beware.

Short Excerpt:

“You touched her.”
Jonas’s sword whistled through the air and sliced off the cowering vampire’s hand in one clean blow. It plopped into the mud. The hatchling howled in agony. Clutching his bleeding arm to his chest, he trembled at Jonas’s feet.
“You kicked her.”
The sword sang down again, lopping off one leg just below the knee. The lifeless limb joined the other in the mud.
The vampire peon passed out.
Jonas shoved his sword into the ground and grabbed the vampire by the hair, holding him aloft with ease. He summoned his power and pushed it into the wounded man, forcing him back to consciousness.
Awakened once again, the vampire screamed, eyes wide with horror.
Jonas bared his fangs. “You bit her.”
He plunged them into the weakling’s neck. He tore a flap of flesh from the front then spat it onto the growing pile of body parts at his feet.
“No more.” With one practiced twist, he wrenched the vampire’s head from his body.
The headless corpse crumpled to the ground. Jonas tossed the head onto the bloody heap, collected his sword and stalked into the night.

About the Author:

Celia lives in California with her husband, daughter, and two feisty cats. She writes urban fantasy and paranormal romance, and has a particular fondness for vampires and the Fae. When not writing, you’ll find her exercising, reading a good book or indulging her addiction to Joss Whedon’s TV shows and movies.

Interview:

I would like to thank Celia Breslin for taking the time out for an author interview.

Who is your favorite character in the Tranquilli Bloodline Series?

Jonas. When I developed his backstory for the series, I knew he was going to be a super fun character. I wrote Vampire Code to give him his star moment in the moonlight. I may have to write more shorts for him. He’s demanding like that.

If you were stranded on a desert island which character do you want by your side?

Jonas! (Sense a theme here? LOL) Of course, he’d need to hide out somewhere shady until evening. But come moonrise, he can fly us out of there.

Who or what inspired you to be a writer?

My Irish grandmother started it with her stories of the Fae, including one tale of her encounter with a Banshee in her root cellar. Imagination fueled, I wrote a lot of fairytales as a kid.

What is your typical day like?

A typical writing day looks something like this: Chauffeur child to school, exercise, write, line edit and/or read slush pile for indie publisher, pick up child, spend evening with family. Rinse, repeat.

How do you overcome writer’s block?

Rigorous exercise or a nice walk helps my Muse, as does music. For Vampire Code, Muse enjoyed Front Line Assembly’s Echogenetic. For Haven, Muse was moved by primarily House, Techno, Electro and Industrial music.  Haven's playlist is on Spotify: http://open.spotify.com/user/1292279739/playlist/1TWos0QMsQe5QjUgl5xPQJ

Can you share a little of your current work with us?

The second book in the Tranquilli Bloodline Series is in progress. Dixon, one of the naughty vampires from Team Evil in Haven, resurfaces in the second book to torment Carina. She knows it’s going to be a bad day when her archenemy has a box of blood delivered to her house...

What book are you reading now?

I recently finished Dysus Dreamer by J. A. Garland and am about to start J. R. Ward’s Lover At Last.

My Review:

Vampire Code (The Tranquilli Bloodline Series, prequel)Vampire Code by Celia Breslin
My rating: 3 ½ of 5 stars

Jonas is a vampire secretly charged with guarding Carina Tranquilli. Carina is attacked by a newly turned vampire. Jonas is not going to tolerate anyone hurting his charge.

This short prequel was interesting and very well written. It definitely left me intrigued and wanting to continue to read the first book in the series, Haven (Tranquilli Bloodline #1). Celia Breslin packed a lot of information and details into this brief twenty page book. I cannot wait to see what she came up with in a longer novel.
